Panel Claims There is No Way To Prevent Alzheimers

Nor can any other supplements, drugs or social interaction, the independent panel meeting at the National Institutes of Health outside Washington concluded.

The group of experts looked at the dozens of studies that have suggested ways to prevent Alzheimer’s — a devastating and incurable breakdown of the brain — and found none were strong enough to constitute proof.

“We wish we could tell people that taking a pill or doing a puzzle every day would prevent this terrible disease, but current evidence doesn’t support this,” said Dr. Martha Daviglus of Northwestern University in Chicago, who chaired the panel.

Most of the studies that have been done show associations, but not cause and effect, Daviglus said.

“These associations are examples of the classic chicken or the egg quandary. Are people able to stay mentally sharp over time because they are physically active and socially engaged or are they simply more likely to stay physically active and socially engaged because they are mentally sharp?” she asked.

The 15 experts met under the NIH’s state-of-the-science conference program, which aims to direct future research in an important study area.

They included specialists in geriatrics, long-term care, nursing, psychiatry and other fields. Panelists may not be federal government employees, nor may they have financial stakes in any treatments considered.

DISEASE NOT FULLY UNDERSTOOD

The Alzheimer’s Association says as many as 5.3 million Americans have Alzheimer’s and projects that 16 million may have it by 2050.

“It is critical that we, as a nation, significantly increase investments in Alzheimer research,” the group said in a statement.

“The total payments for health and long-term care services for people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias will amount to $172 billion from all sources in 2010.”

The panel found there were inconsistent definitions of what constitutes Alzheimer’s disease and the cognitive decline that leads up to it.

Doctors also do not fully understand how the disease develops — for instance, there is disagreement on whether the amyloid plaques found in the brains of victims cause the disease or are merely a symptom.

There are a few drugs to treat Alzheimer’s but their effects are temporary. Genetics are strongly involved, and blacks and other minorities have a higher risk than whites.

Green tea could raise your energy expenditure, and possibly even help battle obesity, according to a new study.

Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a compound found in green tea, was shown to increase fat oxidation by 33 percent.

This result comes from one of many studies that have looked at green tea’s potential in weight loss. EGCG has been shown to be a key component in many of these studies.

There are a number of ways the EGCG could help aid weight loss:

- It could increase metabolism and fat oxidation

- It could inhibit fat cell development

- It could increase fat excretion

Frito-Lay Goes Where No Chip Manufacturer Has Gone Before

Everything you love about potato chips comes down to the combination of three basic flavors: potatoes, oil and salt. But as health concerns about sodium continue to rise, food manufacturers are scrambling to figure out how to reduce it — without sacrificing taste.

Research and development executives at PepsiCo, the company that owns Frito-Lay, think they have the answer. And it’s a solution only a chemist could love: They’re going to change the basic shape of salt.

A quick high-school science class recap: Salt molecules are basic cubes, which means it takes each crystal awhile to break down in your mouth when you’re chomping on chips.

“Early on in our research, it became apparent that the majority of salt on a snack doesn’t even have time to dissolve in your saliva because you swallow it so rapidly,” Mehmood Khan, senior vice president, chief scientific officer and a former Mayo Clinic endocrinologist, said during a recent PepsiCo investor presentation.

A Wall Street Journal piece reported only about 20 percent of the salt on a potato chip dissolves on the tongue, while the remaining 80 percent is swallowed without contributing to taste. The solution? Use crystal chemistry to re-jigger the shape of salt to create more surface area. That way, no un-tasted salt ends up in your digestive system. PepsiCo thinks it can cut up to 25 percent of the sodium in their chips using this technique.

If messing with nature makes you a little nervous (remember Olestra?), you can breathe easier knowing that Brits have been consuming a similarly altered salt for three years with no reported problems. And you have some time to get used to the idea — chips using this technology aren’t expected on shelves for at least a year.

Obama Covers Up Fort Hood Massacre

A top Al Qaeda leader in the Arabian peninsula region Tuesday said he trained the US major who killed 13 people at a military base as well as the Nigerian bomber who attempted to blow up a US-bound plane last year.

Anwar al-Awlaqi claimed to have trained UK-educated Nigerian Islamist Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab who attempted to blow up a jet bound for Detroit Dec 25, 2009.

He also said he was ‘proud’ to have trained radical Islamist Nidal Hassan, a US-born doctor of Palestinian descent who shot dead 13 people and wounded 30 others at the Fort Hood military base in Texas in November last year.

‘I am proud to have been their teacher,’ al-Awlaqi, who has dual Yemeni-US citizenship and was an imam of mosques in San Diego and Virginia, said in a video aired by Al-Jazeera channel.

New Evidence Says Volcanic Ash Cloud Never Existed

Britain’s airspace was closed under false pretences, with satellite images revealing there was no doomsday volcanic ash cloud over the entire country.

Skies fell quiet for six days, leaving as many as 500,000 Britons stranded overseas and costing airlines hundreds of millions of pounds.

Estimates put the number of Britons still stuck abroad at 35,000.

Stranded: Hundreds of desperate Britons sleep on the basement floor at Bangkok’s International Airport, Thailand waiting to get flights home.

However, new evidence shows there was no all-encompassing cloud and, where dust was present, it was often so thin that it posed no risk.

The satellite images demonstrate that the skies were largely clear, which will not surprise the millions who enjoyed the fine, hot weather during the flight ban.

Jim McKenna, the Civil Aviation Authority’s head of airworthiness, strategy and policy, admitted: ‘It’s obvious that at the start of this crisis there was a lack of definitive data.

False alarm? Satellite images have revealed there may never have been a doomsday volcanic ash cloud over the UK (file picture)

‘It’s also true that for some of the time, the density of ash above the UK was close to undetectable.’

The satellite images will be used by airlines in their battle to win tens of millions of pounds in compensation from governments for their losses.

The National Air Traffic Control Service decision to ban flights was based on Met Office computer models which painted a picture of a cloud of ash being blown south from the Eyjafjallajokull volcano.

Eruption: The Eyjafjallajokull volcano saw flights across Europe grind to a halt and passengers stranded.

These models should have been tested by the Met Office’s main research plane, a BAE 146 jet, but it was in a hangar to be repainted and could not be sent up until last Tuesday – the last day of the ban.

Evidence has emerged that the maximum density of the ash was only about one 20th of the limit that scientists, the Government, and aircraft and engine manufacturers have now decided is safe.

British Airways chief Willie Walsh always insisted the total shutdown went too far.

‘My personal belief is that we could have safely continued operating for a period,’ he said.

Mark Tanzer, chief executive of Britain’s ABTA, which represents British travel agents and tour operators, said about 100,000 stranded British travellers should have been returned home by Monday morning.

About 35,000 more will remain marooned until Friday, the group said.

‘While most flights are back to normal, and most stranded British passengers will be back by the end of this weekend, there is still quite a high level of disruption in some destinations.

‘In some areas of the world, there is a significant lack of air capacity to enable British people to be returned quickly,’ Tanzer said.

Many Icelandic airports are closed and though authorities say Eyjafjallajokull is now producing much less ash, they confirmed no signs of the eruption ending.

Colorado Town Proposing to Make Voting Mandatory

April 28, 2010 by Duffy

April 28, 2010

DenverPost.com

by Nancy Lofholm

Residents of this Old West- meets-New Age town can be fined if their fences are too high, they have too many chickens, their dogs aren’t on leashes or their weeds are out of control.

Tom Hennessy would like to add not voting to that list.

Hennessy, a popular Ridgway brewer and pub owner, is proposing that the mostly dirt-street town at the edge of the San Juan Mountains become a national model by enacting a mandatory-voting statute. Residents who don’t bother to vote, for no good reason, would be fined.

“We could do this. It would be a paradigm shift,” Hennessy said. “We could be the great civics lesson in representative democracy.”

The Town Council agreed to put the matter on the ballot for a recent town election as a nonbinding opinion question.

A letter to the editor of the Ridgway Sun quickly followed. Nonvoting resident Eric Sanford wrote that he would enjoy “the privilege of being the first to file a lawsuit against the Town of Ridgway and individual members of the Town Council.”

Hennessy proposes adding a “none of the above” ballot choice to protect free speech. But fear of lawsuits prompted a council already grappling with unpopular budget cuts, including to the town’s Pickin’ in the Park concerts, to kill the ballot question.

Lawsuits weren’t the only concern for council member John Clark.

The stained-glass artist and computer consultant said he feared the ballot measure would upset a delicate balance in a 1,000-person red/blue town where conservatives and liberals, and cowboys and kayakers, live in somewhat tenuous harmony.

“Tom is going at this from the idea of: Think globally and act locally,” Clark said. “I think that’s a mistake.”

But the idea is gaining traction.

Ridgway Sun editor David Mullings called the idea “either stupid, or brilliant” in an editorial that also urged residents to continue the discussion.

Hennessy has been invited to present his idea to the Ouray County commissioners. He also makes use of the perfect soapbox behind the bar at the Colorado Boy Pub & Brewery, a hopping business in a 1915 building that has served the town as post office, drugstore and tipi-making operation.

“I thought it was a neat idea (in the bar). When I heard Tom was going to bring it to the Town Council, I gulped,” said Ridgway Mayor Pat Wil lits, who tends bar part time at the Colorado Boy.

Voter turnout has not been anything to brag about in Ridgway. Only 170 of the 790 registered voters marked ballots in the last town election. In the past decade, as few as 82 voters have gone to the polls.

“I applaud Tom for stirring things up,” said Ouray County Commissioner Keith Meinert. “It’s great to get thinking about this.”

Meinert pointed out, however, that the county doesn’t have the money to help with a legal battle that could climb to the U.S. Supreme Court.

He also noted that less-polarizing ideas have stirred up testy disagreements locally.

Residents come out in droves to hash over open-space and dog-leash issues. A town regulation limiting hens and banning roosters is headed to court this summer because at least one resident is questioning the rule’s legitimacy.

Ridgway administrator Greg Clifton said that while townspeople continue the voting discussion, he wants to take measures to encourage more voting. That might include going to an all-mail-in ballot.

Hennessy said that isn’t enough: Ridgway needs to show its mettle.

“Could you imagine if 95 percent of the people in little Ridgway voted?” he asked. “I would bet at the statehouse they would start paying attention to us. I know (gubernatorial candidate John) Hickenlooper would come here if it happened.”

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told a Senate hearing Tuesday that unmanned aerial drones will soon fly through Texas skies!

“Big Sis” declared that over the past 15 months, federal law enforcement initiatives have made the border more secure than in any other time in history, the SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS reports in Wednesday editions.

The new “predator bees” have the capability to fly at altitudes used by commercial aircraft, and are designed to enhance intelligence capabilities of federal, state and local law enforcement.

But a recent analysis of the use of unmanned aerial vehicles found that they were twice as likely to crash as manned aircraft, according to the Congressional Research Service.

Scientists Make Cancer Cells Vanish Within 10 Days

April 28, 2010 by Duffy

Scottish scientists have made cancer tumours vanish within 10 days by sending DNA to seek and destroy the cells.

The system, developed at Strathclyde and Glasgow universities, is being hailed as a breakthrough because it appears to eradicate tumours without causing harmful side-effects. A leading medical journal has described the results so far as remarkable, while Cancer Research UK said they were encouraging.

Dr Christine Dufes, a lecturer at the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences and leader of the research, said: “The tumours were completely gone within 10 days. It is fantastic. When you talk about 10 days that is the time frame for curing a cold. Imagine if within 10 days you could completely make a tumour disappear.”

Researchers around the world are trying to find ways to use genes as a cancer treatment, but one problem is ensuring they attack the tumour without destroying healthy tissue.

In laboratory experiments the Strathclyde research team used a plasma protein called transferrin, which carries iron through the blood, to deliver the therapeutic DNA to the right spot. Once in situ the DNA produced a protein that attacked the tumour cells.

The findings have been published in the Journal of Controlled Release, with an accompanying comment from editor Professor Kinam Park, of Purdue University, Indiana, saying other attempts to target genes at cancer cells have “seldom shown complete disappearance of tumours”.

The research was initially supported with a grant from charity Tenovus Scotland, which supports the work of young scientists to help their ideas get off the ground.
