Obama To Hold Rare Press Conference Today

On Thursday, for the first time in 308 days, President Obama will confront the White House press corps in a full-blown news conference, taking the best shots that reporters have to offer on the topics of their choosing.

Obama’s lengthy absence from reporters’ crosshairs has exceeded President George W. Bush’s longest gap of 204 days.

As a candidate two years ago, Obama, then a senator, mused aloud about holding a news conference every month.

As president, Obama has held just four prime-time news conferences in the first 485 days of his term, but that is equal to the total number that his last three predecessors – combined – had held by the same point in their first terms. The Bushes had each held one; Bill Clinton, two.

The Secret Chemicals Found In Your Fragrance

A rose may be a rose. But that rose-like fragrance in your perfume may be something else entirely, concocted from any number of the fragrance industry’s 3,100 stock chemical ingredients, the blend of which is almost always kept hidden from the consumer.

Makers of popular perfumes, colognes and body sprays market their scents with terms like “floral,” “exotic,” or “musky,” but they don’t disclose that many scents are actually a complex cocktail of natural essences and synthetic chemicals – often petrochemicals. Laboratory tests commissioned by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and analyzed by Environmental Working Group revealed 38 secret chemicals in 17 name brand fragrance products, topped by American Eagle Seventy Seven with 24, Chanel Coco with 18, and Britney Spears Curious and Giorgio Armani Acqua Di Gio with 17.

The average fragrance product tested contained 14 secret chemicals not listed on the label. Among them are chemicals associated with hormone disruption and allergic reactions, and many substances that have not been assessed for safety in personal care products.

Also in the ranks of undisclosed ingredients are chemicals with troubling hazardous properties or with a propensity to accumulate in human tissues. These include diethyl phthalate, a chemical found in 97 percent of Americans (Silva 2004) and linked to sperm damage in human epidemiological studies (Swan 2008), and musk ketone, a synthetic fragrance ingredient that concentrates in human fat tissue and breast milk (Hutter 2009; Reiner 2007).

(NaturalNews) A Delaware pediatrician recently arrested and charged with molesting more than 100 children was the subject of complaints and investigations almost 10 years ago, but the state medical board never took action against him.

“The system failed. What I don’t know, and what we must find out, is where and how,” said Gov. Jack Markell.

Earl Bradley was recently arrested after a two-year-old girl told her mother that the doctor had taken her into a basement room after her medical exam and hurt her. Police have since charged him with more than 30 felonies. Prosecutors say that for almost a decade, he raped and otherwise assaulted children in the basement and exam rooms, some of them decorated with Disney themes. In some cases, they say, he videotaped the attacks.

(NaturalNews) Drinking at least a cup of green tea a day may significantly decrease a person’s risk of lung cancer, according to a study conducted by researchers from Shan Medical University in Taiwan.

Cancer rates are significantly lower in Asia than in other parts of the world, and high consumption of green tea has been suggested as one of the potential explanations. Laboratory studies have suggested that the polyphenols in green tea can halt the growth of cancer cells, but the results of human studies have been mixed.

The Best and Worst Drinks In America

Whoever invented bottled water was a genius. Think about it: They took a widely available and nearly free commodity, packaged it nice and pretty, and sold it for hundreds of times more than what the public version costs. And how did they do it? Savvy marketing. Water bottle labels evoke images of freshness and purity that you just don’t get from a running tap. Don’t be fooled, though. About a quarter of bottled water actually comes from municipal sources.

When it comes to your health, bottled water is a fine choice. Water that meets minimum safety standards is good for you, regardless of the source. But the rest of the beverages in the supermarket that boast equally idyllic sounding health benefits might not be. Over the past three years, the Eat This, Not That! book series has exposed hundreds of food frauds. And now, our latest book, Drink This, Not That!, does the same for beverages.

What I learned, above all: What we drink is making us fat. We’re consuming at least a quarter of our daily calories in liquid form–more than 450 calories a day–and that’s a major factor in our nation’s obesity epidemic. Watching what you drink is just as important, if not more so, than watching what you eat, especially if you’re trying to shed belly fat. The trick, as always, is to distinguish between healthful drinks, and healthful sounding drinks. Here, I’ve listed the 6 worst “health” drinks in America. Steer clear of these bloating beverages and drink their healthiest alternatives instead. You can lose up to two pounds a week! Worst Water

Snapple Agave Melon Antioxidant Water (1 bottle, 20 fl oz)
150 calories
0 g fat
33 g sugars (8 teaspoons of the stuff!)

Sugar Equivalent: 2 Good Humor Chocolate Éclair Bars

While “Worst Water” may sound like an oxymoron, the devious minds in the bottled beverage industry have even found a way to besmirch the sterling reputation of the world’s most essential compound. Sure, you may get a few extra vitamins, but ultimately, you’re paying a premium price for gussied-up sugar water. Next time you buy a bottle of water, check the recipe: You want two parts hydrogen, one part oxygen, and very little else.

Drink This Instead!

Regulators Accepted Gifts From Big Oil Company

Wall Street Journal

By Stephen Power

Employees of a federal agency that regulates offshore drilling—including some whose duties included inspecting offshore oil rigs—accepted sporting-event tickets, meals, and other gifts from oil and natural-gas companies and used government computers to view pornography, according to a new report by the Interior Department’s inspector general.

The report—published Tuesday on the inspector general’s website—describes a culture in which inspectors assigned to the Lake Charles, La., office of the Minerals Management Service have moved with “ease” between jobs in industry and government, drawing on relationships that formed “well before they took their jobs” with the agency.

Although the report says that “all of the conduct” examined in the report is “dated” and occurred prior to 2007, its publication comes at a sensitive time, with Interior Secretary Ken Salazar scheduled to testify before Congress Wednesday on his plan to restructure the agency following the April 20 explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig. The accident led to the deaths of 11 workers and to the spillage of thousands of barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico each day.

Mr. Salazar said he has asked the inspector general to expand her investigation to determine whether any of “this reprehensible behavior” persisted after the department implemented new ethics rules in 2009.

The inspector general’s report doesn’t specify how many MMS staffers accepted gifts from the oil industry, but says “this behavior appears to have drastically declined” since a former MMS supervisor, Don Howard, was terminated from the agency in 2007.

Mr. Howard, the former regional supervisor of the Gulf of Mexico region for MMS, pled guilty and was sentenced to a year’s probation in federal court in New Orleans last year for lying about receiving gifts from an offshore-drilling contractor.

Among other things, the report says that in 2005, 2006 and 2007, MMS employees attended a number of events either organized or partly funded by various offshore companies, including hunting and fishing trips and, golf tournaments. It quotes an industry official as describing how he arranged for two MMS inspectors to fly with him on a friend’s plane to the 2005 Peach Bowl and to get tickets to the game.

The report also describes one MMS inspector as having admitted to using crystal methamphetamine, and says investigators found “numerous instances” of pornography and “other inappropriate material” on the email accounts of 13 MMS employees, six of whom have resigned.

In a written statement Tuesday, Mr. Salazar said some of the employees referred to in the inspector general’s report have resigned, been terminated, or referred for prosecution. He added that any remaining staffers accused in the report of questionable behavior will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of a personnel review.

In 2008, another report by the inspector general concluded that MMS employees assigned to a royalty-collection office in Colorado created a “culture of ethical failure” by accepting gifts from, and in some cases having sex with, industry representatives.

“ Business runs amok and regulators are asleep at the switch. Lovely. ”

—John Delaney

Following the inspector general’s report, the Interior Department took disciplinary action against more than a half dozen MMS workers, with punishments that ranged from a warning letter to termination.

The latest report does not attempt to link the alleged activities of MMS employees in the Lake Charles office to the accident involving the Deepwater Horizon oil rig. It does, however, say that an unnamed “confidential source” told investigators that some MMS inspectors had allowed petroleum company workers to fill out inspection forms in pencil.

According to the unnamed source, the forms would then be completed by MMS inspectors who would write on top of the pencil in ink. The report doesn’t establish whether the allegation is true, saying that despite reviewing more than 550 files, investigators “could not discern if any fraudulent alterations were present.”

Tap Water Is Cleaner Than Bottled Water

May 26, 2010 by Andrew

Telegraph.co.uk

A team of scientists found that 70 per cent of popular bottled water brands available in shops had high levels of bacteria.

The researchers from Ccrest Laboratories in Canada found that tap water had less bacteria than bottled water.

Microbiologist Dr Sonish Azam, of Ccrest Laboratories, said bottled water did not live up to its claims or purity.

She said: “Heterotrophic bacteria counts in some of the bottles were found to be in revolting figures of one hundred times more than the permitted limit.”

Dr Azam said tighter controls needed to be put on bottled water manufacturers.

“Bottled water is not expected to be free from microorganisms but the [level] observed in this study is surprisingly very high,” she said.

Dr Azam said there was no need to drink bottled water if tap water was of a good quality.

“Unsurprisingly, the consumer assumes that since bottled water carries a price tag, it is purer and safer than most tap water,” she added.

Dr Azam said that the bacteria in bottled water is unlikely to cause disease.

“But the high levels of bacteria in bottled water could pose a risk for vulnerable populations such as pregnant women, infants, immunocompromised patients and the elderly,” she said.

Nutritionist Dr Chris Fenn said there was no need to drink bottled water in the UK because tap water was so good.

“We’re lucky in this country to have good quality tap water, there are problems with the amount of bacteria found in bottled water,” she said.

“And there is a huge environmental cost to all the plastic used to make the bottles which then sit in the heat.”

Dr Fenn said people should drink tap water as much as possible.

“But if you are thirsty, you might be out and not near a tap so it’s worth buying bottled water,” she said.

“Two litres a day is the general figure but it is quite variable between people.

“Some people could be the same age and the same weight and do the same amount of exercise but still need different amounts of water to be hydrated.

“One person might drink one litre and be fine while the other person needs three litres.”

Over 1,000 Abortions From Teens In 2009

May 26, 2010 by Andrew

May 26, 2010

Telegraph.co.uk

By Kate Devlin

In total 1,047 young people aged either 14 or younger had an abortion in 2009 the figures show, a slight drop on the previous year

The figures were released just a day after the first advert for abortion was shown on British television.

It also follows a recommendation that teenagers and other young women be encouraged to stockpile the morning after pill at home in case of emergencies by the National Institute for health and Clinical Excellence (Nice), the Government’s public health body.

There were 3,823 abortions performed on under 16s, and 17,916 on under-18s last year, the statistics, released by the Department of Health, show, also a slight fall on the previous year.

One in three women having a termination, including 1,341 under-18s, had already had at least one abortion.

Another 2,637 women had had three previous abortions, while 779 had had four, 214 had had five and 48 women had had seven or more abortions.

Even by a relatively young age many women had had multiple terminations, the figures also show.

Among 25 to 29 year olds, 3,268 had already had two terminations, and 70 had had five previous abortions.

Overall, however, the number of women having abortions fell slightly for the second year in a row, from 195,296 in 2008 to 189,100 in 2009.

A total of 136 were performed on girls under 14, the figures show, and 911 on 14-year-olds.

At the other end of the spectrum there were 720 abortions among women aged 45 to 49, and 21 on those aged 50 and older.

The abortion rate was highest for women aged 19 to 21, at 33 per 1,000 for women, again slightly lower than last year.

The vast majority, 91 per cent, were carried out before 13 weeks, the figures also show.

There was a slight rise in the rate of medical abortions, which use pills to stimulate a termination, to 40 per cent up from 38 per cent last year.

Overall, 2,085 abortions, or one per cent of the total, were for children who would have been born disabled, including 775 for chromosomal abnormalities including Down’s syndrome.

Ann Furedi, chief executive of the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS), said: “It’s interesting to see that fewer abortions took place last year, for the second year running.

“However abortion figures tend to fluctuate slightly year-on-year so we can’t call this a trend yet, especially with the background of the last few decades’ gradual rise in the numbers of abortions.”

A spokesman for the Department of Health said: “We’re pleased to see that the rate of abortions continues to fall.

“There is a wide range of effective contraception available – women should speak to their GP or practice nurse or visit nhs.uk if they need more information.”

But Norman Wells, from the Family Education Trust, which researches the reasons behind family breakdown, said that the high abortion rates were an “inevitable consequence of a society that has made an idol of sexual pleasure”.

He added: “It is not ignorance of contraception that leads to alarming rates of teenage abortions.

“The contraceptive culture has made girls feel they have a right to have babies to order and to do away with any that would interfere with their chosen lifestyle.”
