(NaturalNews) A major new discovery just reported in the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) journal could be a major advance in the treatment of prostate cancer. Not only have the phytonutrients in red wine and green tea been found to halt prostate cancer growth, a team of French and Japanese scientists are reporting they know exactly why this occurs.

Antioxidants known as polyphenols in red wine and green tea produce a combined effect that disrupts an important cell signaling pathway necessary for prostate cancer to thrive. The result? The natural wine and tea components appear to stop or slow the initiation, promotion, and progression of prostate cancer.

New Home Prices Drop To Lowest Level Ever

By Alan Zibel

WASHINGTON (AP) — Sales of new homes collapsed in May, sinking 33 percent to the lowest level on record as potential buyers stopped shopping for homes once they could no longer receive government tax credits.

The bleak report from the Commerce Department is the first sign of how the end of federal tax credits could weigh on the nation’s housing market.

The credits expired April 30. That’s when a new-home buyer would have had to sign a contract to qualify.

“We fear that the appetite to buy a home has disappeared alongside the tax credit,” Paul Dales, U.S. economist with Capital Economics,” wrote in a note. “After all, unemployment remains high, job security is low and credit conditions are tight.”

New-home sales in May fell from April to a seasonally adjusted annual sales pace of 300,000, the government said Wednesday. That was the slowest sales pace on records dating back to 1963. And it’s the largest monthly drop on record. Sales have now sunk 78 percent from their peak in July 2005.

(NaturalNews) Researchers from the Stanford University School of Medicine and the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System in California recently released the results of a study they conducted on the best ways to get Americans to consume less salt. The study was in response to research indicating that even a 10 percent cut in salt intake overall would prevent thousands of heart attacks and strokes over the course of several decades, saving the U.S. government $32 billion in healthcare costs.

Researchers decided that the best approach to reducing overall salt intake is to establish voluntary programs with the U.S. food industry to cut salt levels in food. The U.K. operates under a similar program that is said to work well.

According to Dr. Crystal Smith-Spangler from the VA, even a small decrease in overall salt intake would be effective at reducing the number of deaths due to cardiovascular disease. According to the study, more than 500,000 fatal stroke and more than 480,000 heart attacks would be prevented because of the salt-cutting campaign.

(NaturalNews) Rates of prescription drug abuse worldwide are higher than those for the use of cocaine, ecstasy and heroin, combined, according to a new report by the United Nations’ International Narcotics Control Boards (INCB).

“Abuse of such drugs has been spreading over the world in recent years,” said report co-author Hamid Ghodse of St. George’s University in London. “It needs to be tackled urgently.”

Ghodse said that prescription drug abuse is a “hidden problem,” and it is difficult for authorities to get comprehensive data on the scale of the abuse. Recent high-profile celebrity deaths from prescription drug abuse, such as that of Michael Jackson, have brought more attention to the issue, however.

Green Tea Extract Halts Cancer Progression

(NaturalNews) According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a form of cancer that causes the number of white blood cells called B lymphocytes, or B cells, to increase abnormally. Eventually, the cancerous cells can move through the blood to the liver, spleen, and other organs. When CLL spreads, it is usually treated with an arsenal of side effect-laden chemotherapies. But new research has revealed a natural substance — an extract of green tea — may have the ability to put the brakes on CLL.

Mayo Clinic researchers recently announced these findings in Chicago at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). In a phase II clinical trial, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), the major component of green tea, halted the progression in the majority of CLL patients.

The New York Times

By Eric Dash

JPMorgan Chase emerged from the financial crisis as one of the strongest banks on American soil. Now it wants to make up lost ground overseas. The bank’s chief executive, Jamie Dimon, announced a series of management changes toward that end on Tuesday, appointing one of his closest lieutenants to a new position with a mandate to start a global corporate banking business and scout out opportunities in Europe, Latin America and Asia.

The executive, Heidi G. Miller, was named president of the bank’s international operations and chairwoman of a new global advisory committee made up of about a dozen senior bankers and regional business heads. The new role should further cement Ms. Miller’s standing as one of the most powerful women on Wall Street.

Ms. Miller’s appointment set off other changes to the bank’s organizational chart. Michael J. Cavanagh, JPMorgan’s chief financial officer, will take over for Ms. Miller as head of the bank’s Treasury and Securities division, which focuses on back-office recordkeeping and securities lending for big institutional investors like hedge funds and pension funds.

Douglas L. Braunstein, 49, the head of investment banking for the Americas, will succeed Mr. Cavanagh, 44. Mr. Braunstein’s successor has not been named.

Orszag First To Bail In Obama Administration

By: Mike Allen

White House budget director Peter Orszag plans to leave government in July, becoming the first member of President Barack Obama’s Cabinet to depart, administration officials said Monday. Orszag is likely to join a think tank, colleagues said.

Presidential advisers say a possible successor as director of the Office of Management and Budget is Rob Nabors, who was Orszag’s deputy and went over to the Chief of Staff’s office to be a senior adviser to Rahm Emanuel. Nabors now he attends the 7:30 a.m. senior staff meeting and insiders say his stock never dropped, but only gained in value.

Two other possible replacements each served as chief economic adviser to President Bill Clinton: Laura D’Andrea Tyson of the University of California at Berkeley, named by Obama as a member of the President’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board; and Gene Sperling, now a counselor to Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner.

Tyson would provide the economic team with an effective spokesperson on television. And she’d add gender diversity at the top of the administration, especially if Christina Romer, chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, becomes president of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, as expected. Obama has nominated the current president, Janet Yellen, as the Fed’s vice chair.

An outsider is unlikely to get the job, the officials said. One possibility would be Robert Greenstein, director of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. Jack Lew, Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources, was also mentioned, but held the job under Clinton, and so is considered unlikely to want to go back.

Officials have said for some time that Orszag was trying to decide between leaving this summer and early next year, after the next budget is released. “He went back and forth and couldn’t quite commit,” said a senior colleague. Top aides had pressed him for a decision, and he decided on sooner rather than later, the officials said. Hans Nichols of Bloomberg News first reported the planned departure.

Orszag, 41, is to be married in September to Bianna Golodryga, now co-anchor of the “Good Morning America” weekend edition, as well as ABC News’ business correspondent. The pair was engaged in December, adding to the unlikely celebrity of the wonky Orszag.

Tyson served in the Clinton administration from January 1993 to December 1996, first as chairman of the President’s Council of Economic Advisors, then as chairman of his National Economic Council. Sperling, her successor as chief economic adviser, served all eight years in the Clinton administration. Tyson is now Berkeley’s S.K. and Angela Chan Professor of Global Management at the Haas School of Business.

Orszag has two signature accomplishments: the stimulus bill andhealth reform, which he advocated from the beginning of the administration. That’s on top of two budgets: The first was deemed “historic” by pundits (“Obama, Breaking ‘From a Troubled Past,’ Seeks a Budget to Reshape U.S. Priorities,” said the New York Times banner headline in February 2009). The second was considered tough by administration insiders because it included a freeze on non-security, discretionary spending.

Fed Halts Sand Berm Dredging

The federal government is shutting down the dredging that was being done to create protective sand berms in the Gulf of Mexico. The berms are meant to protect the Louisiana coastline from oil.  But the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Department has concerns about where the dredging is being done. Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser, who was one of the most vocal advocates of the dredging plan, has sent a letter to President Barack Obama, pleading for the work to continue. Nungesser said the government has asked crews to move the dredging site two more miles farther off the coastline.”Once again, our government resource agencies, which are intended to protect us, are now leaving us vulnerable to the destruction of our coastline and marshes by the impending oil,” Nungesser wrote to Obama. “Furthermore, with the threat of hurricanes or tropical storms, we are being put at an increased risk for devastation to our area from the intrusion of oil.Nungesser has asked for the dredging to continue for the next seven days, the amount of time it would take to move the dredging operations two miles and out resume work.Work is scheduled to halt at midnight Wednesday. The California dredge located off the Chandelier Islands has pumped more than 50,000 cubic yards of material daily to create a sand berm, according to Plaquemines Parish officials.Nungesser’s letter includes an emotional plea to the president.”Please don’t let them shut this dredge down,” he wrote. “This requires your immediate attention!”

Tips For a Stress-Free Flight

June 23, 2010 by KT

Some of us know the stresses of air travel all too well. Low oxygen, inferior air quality, cramped seating, high frequency noise, and the dehydrating effects of flying. And with this more serious health risks occur, such as sinus problems, radiation exposure, blood clotting and perhaps the most serious of all,
the stress of air travel itself.

Also, the risk of infection is increased when we fly, so here are my suggestions to protect yourself before and after your trip:

Ginger
Ginger calms nerves, relieves nausea due to motion sickness, and is an overall digestive soother which acts as a gentle decongestant to ease sinus irritation.

Move Around
Drinking pure filtered water will make it so you must get out of your seat to use the bathroom, hopefully at least every half hour. Each bathroom trip, stand and stretch, raise up your arms, wiggle your feet, jump up and down. The jumping helps to compensate for the absence of muscular activity in the calves from sitting for extended periods, which severely slows lower limb circulation.

Mist
Carry a small spray bottle to mist your face while flying. Misting hydrates the skin, and helps keep nasal passages moistened.

Supplement
Double up on your daily doses of vitamin C, zinc, antioxidants, green foods such as chlorella and spirulina, whole food multiple vitamins and vitamin E.

Food
Bring food, such as fresh fruit, raw nuts and seeds, organic food bars or a sandwich made on whole grain bread. Make sure to bring enough food to keep you from eating the salty, fatty, roasted peanuts and cheap preservative-filled pretzels served on flights these days!

Do Not Drink Alcohol
It will dehydrate you, dull your senses, keep you from drinking enough water, and leave you prone to infection due to the immune-lowering effects of alcohol.

Most Important: Rest
Travel well rested. This commonly overlooked aspect of healthy travel sets the stage for a stress cycle that can last your entire trip. As hard as it is to get out the door, be sure to sleep well before you travel.

Yours in Health,

KT
