Autism More Likely for Second-Child
January 14th, 2011
The Autism News
While no cure is known for autism, researchers believe environmental factors and genetics to play a role. In fact, new findings show the duration between pregnancies may directly impact the risks of having a child with autism.
A study from Columbia University found that women who, after giving birth to their first child, quickly become pregnant again, notice drastically higher chances of having a baby with autism.
Researchers analyzed time between births and the health records of more than 500,000 children who were born second.
Dr. Thomas Frazier, an autism authority, explained that second-child autism rates are increased if the child is born between 12 months or less of the first child. The numbers from the study backed him up.
Children born between 12-24 months after the birth of a first child noticed 125 percent increase of autism cases.
One suggestion for this is that a woman may lack vital nutrients after the birth of their first child, including folate and iron. Additionally, higher levels of stress may negatively affect the health of the second-born child.
Researchers explain that a number of factors may be at fault, and additional research is being done to narrow down the largest risk factors.

FDA Going After Vitamin C
January 14th, 2011
NY Daily News
By: Rosemary Black
At the first sign of the sniffles, are you tearing open a fizzy packet of Emergen-C? Or drinking steaming cup after cup of echinacea tea?
All that vitamin C and herbal supplementing may not be doing you any good when it comes to fighting a cold.
But it depends who you ask.
Dr. Seth Feltheimer of New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia Medical Center told the Daily News there have been no consistently positive studies for Vitamin C or echinacea.
“As much as I would like to say they would work, I can’t.”
Echinacea offers cold comfort when it comes to preventing sneezes and sniffles. In fact, the herbal remedy touted as a way to prevent colds had only “minimal effects,” according to a study from the American College of Physicians.
The echinacea tablets did not reduce the severity of cold symptoms and only shortened the duration of the cough by seven to 20 hours – a “statistically insignificant result,” according to the researchers.
The study concluded that in most instances, popping echinacea was not “worthwhile.”
But Joy Lindquist, the wellness coordinator of Long Island College Hospital’s cancer center, says vitamin C and echinacea work if taken at the very first sign of a cold.
“The reason they don’t work in some people is that they are rundown,” she says. “If you have a poor diet and aren’t taking care of yourself and getting enough rest, don’t expect it to work.”
Lindquist recommends six to eight echinacea tablets per day, along with 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C. She does not recommend megadoses of C. “You can only absorb so much,” Lindquist says. “And if you take too much, it gives you the runs.”
Lenox Hill Hospital ear, nose and throat specialist Dr. Jordan S. Josephson believes taking vitamins can help reduce a cold’s severity but says the jury is still out on whether they’re effective. “More in depth studies are needed,” he says.
His remedy for preventing a cold is prevention: eat right, get plenty of sleep, and take a multivitamin.
“In this season especially, it is important to stay well rested,” Josephson says. “It’s also important to stay well hydrated so drink a lot of water.”
As for the alcohol you may feel is practically a God-given right at holiday time? “Alcohol is very dehydrating,” Josephson says.
One other supplement to try? Zinc, advises Feltheimer.
“There may be some evidence that zinc tablets can shorten the duration of a cold,” he says. “But the zinc tablets taste terrible and can cause diarrhea, nausea and flatulence.”

Magnetic North Pole Shifting Towards Russia
January 14th, 2011
FoxNews.com
By: Jeremy A. Kaplan
The planet’s northern magnetic pole is drifting slowly but steadily towards Russia — and it’s throwing off planes in Florida.
Tampa International Airport was forced to readjust its runways Thursday to account for the movement of the Earth’s magnetic fields, information that pilots rely upon to navigate planes. Thanks to the fluctuations in the force, the airport has closed its primary runway until Jan. 13 to change taxiway signs to account for the shift, the Federal Aviation Administration said.
The poles are generated by movements within the Earth’s inner and outer cores, though the exact process isn’t exactly understood. They’re also constantly in flux, moving a few degrees every year, but the changes are almost never of such a magnitude that runways require adjusting, said Paul Takemoto, a spokesman for the FAA.
The magnetic fields vary from place to place. Adjustments are needed now at airports in Tampa, but they aren’t immediately required at all airports across the country.
So just how often is something like this necessary? “It happens so infrequently that they wouldn’t venture a guess,” Takemoto told FoxNews.com. “In fact, you’re the first journalist to ever ask me about it.”
Takemoto was quick to point out that the change, which also was required at Tampa’s smaller Peter O. Knight airport, will have no effect on passenger safety.
“You want to be absolutely precise in your compass heading,” he pointed out. “To make sure the precision is there that we need, you have to make these changes.”
Kathleen Bergen, another spokeswoman for the FAA, explained that runway designations and charting rely upon geomagnetic information. “Aviation is charted using latitude and longitude and the magnetic poles,” she told FoxNews.com.
The busiest runway at Tampa International will be re-designated 19R/1L on aviation charts. It had been 18R/36L, indicating its alignment along the 180-degree approach from the north and the 360-degree approach from the south, explained an article in the Tampa Tribune detailing the changes. Later this month, the airport’s east parallel runway and the seldom used east-west runway will be closed to change signs reflecting their new designations as well.
“The Earth’s poles are changing constantly, and when they change more than three degrees, that can affect runway numbering,” Bergen said.
While rejiggering the runways is a very extreme event, the fields are constantly in flux and constantly being remapped, explained Lorne McKee, a scientist with the geomagnetism division of Natural Resources Canada.
“Since the fields change relatively slowly, they’re marked out at 10 degree increments,” he explained. The field has swung from approximately 10 degrees east in the late 16th century to 25 degrees west in the early 19th century — before returning to a current value of about 3 degrees west.
It wasn’t immediately clear when or even if changes would be required at other airports. And even the rate of change is inconsistent, McKee said, noting that it’s changing much more quickly at the poles themselves.
Beyond just sliding around the planet, the magnetic north and south poles have been known to completely flip as well; these reversals, recorded in the magnetism of ancient rocks, are unpredictable. The last one was 780,000 years ago. Are we overdue for another? No one knows.

Secret Scientists Claim to Create Rain in Arab Desert
January 14th, 2011
AOL News
By: Matthew Hall
A secret scientific program to control the weather has seen artificially created storms rain down on the Middle Eastern desert.
Recent reports say Swiss scientists working for the ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi last year successfully created 52 rainstorms in a usually arid region of the United Arab Emirates, using secret technology.
Most of the storms were created in Al Ain, near Abu Dhabi, during July and August — the height of summer when conditions are usually parched.
The founder of the Swiss company running the project, Meteo Systems International, boasted of the project’s success.
“We have achieved a number of rainfalls,” trumpeted Helmut Fluhrer.
Meteo Systems International, hired by United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to develop and test the technology, used giant ionizers resembling lampshades on steel poles to generate fields of negatively charged particles.
A statement on the company’s website promoting the invention it has called Weathertec reads:
“Since mankind can no longer take abundant supplies of fresh water for granted, our brightest minds, energy and resources must focus on finding solutions today. For our planet’s future, innovative plans and the most sophisticated technologies are needed both to tackle water shortages that lead to food crises, and to protect the environment by producing more clean, green hydro energy. Therefore, we have both the opportunity — and the moral obligation — to develop, use and invest in these solutions.”
The latest developments are different from “cloud seeding,” which has met with varying degrees of success in its 20-year history.
In 2008, chunks of cement fell from a plane and crashed into a Moscow home after an attempt to clear rain clouds from the Russian sky failed.
However, some American weather experts called the apparent Abu Dhabi breakthrough baloney.
“That’s garbage, that’s absolute garbage,” Joseph Golden, a former senior meteorologist at the Forecast Systems Lab of the National Weather Service, told Fox News.
“I don’t believe that for a nanosecond. You aren’t going to get anything out of clear skies. I don’t want to sound like Tom Cruise here, but show me the data.”
Fox News also reported that, apparently unperturbed by critics, Meteo Systems filed a patent application on Feb. 4 for the technology.
The application describes “methods and devices for modifying atmospheric conditions, known in this context as weather modification, by enhancing electric forces exerted on and between particles of atmospheric air, such as water particles, aerosols, molecular clusters, and water molecules possessing their own electric dipole moment.”
“They’re making some rather rash claims, and I’m very skeptical,” said Golden.

Treat Chronic Hives With Vitamin D
January 14th, 2011
Natural News
By: Jonathan Benson
Researchers from the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) have found that vitamin D plays an important role in mitigating chronic hives. Jill Poole, M.D., and her colleagues observed that patients with chronic hives typically have very low vitamin D levels, and that supplementing with the vitamin may help to alleviate their condition and improve their overall health.
“Chronic hives can be quite frustrating for patients as treatment options are limited. They can make you feel miserable,” explained Dr. Poole, an allergist, concerning the condition. “Vitamin D may be one part of the answer to this troublesome disease. Given the health benefits, there’s no harm in taking vitamin D if you don’t overdo it. It’s easy, inexpensive and can be taken daily at 1,000 to 2,000 international units (IUs).”
Published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, the study revealed that nearly half of the chronic hives patients evaluated were deficient in vitamin D, which is a step lower than insufficient vitamin D levels. Consequently, Poole believes that chronic hives patients who either expose themselves to more sunlight to generate vitamin D, or take vitamin D supplements to up their levels, will experience improved health.
Vitamin D deficiency is linked to a host of diseases including diabetes, osteoporosis, heart disease, hypertension and cancer. The body produces vitamin D naturally from regular sunlight exposure but, especially during the winter, many people spend too little time in the sun to derive any significant benefit. And when they do venture out, they typically lather themselves in chemical-laden, UV-blocking sunscreens that prevent the vitamin D-producing sun rays from penetrating the skin.

90 Percent Of Americans Are Nutrient Deficient, But Processed Milk Is Not The Answer
January 14th, 2011
Natural News
By: Ethan A. Huff
The Milk Processor Education Program Dairy Research Institute recently released a study entitled “What America’s Missing: A 2011 Report on the Nation’s Nutrient Gap,” revealing that 90 percent of Americans are nutrient deficient. But the group’s solution, to drink more processed milk, is hardly the answer to the nutrient crisis.
According to the report, nine out of ten Americans are deficient in 11 key nutrients, including calcium, vitamin D and potassium. And while this fact definitely translates into a serious health crisis, finding these nutrients in pasteurized, homogenized milk products that come from feedlot cows treated with artificial growth hormones like rBGH, is not the solution.
But the same people that put together the “got milk?” campaign would like everyone to think so, as they have now launched an initiative to pressure mothers to give their children more processed milk in order to fill the nutrient gap. And they are hiring celebrities like Susan Sarandon, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, to help market the message to the masses.
By now, NaturalNews readers probably already know that the vast majority of humankind is deficient in vitamin D. And the best way to get vitamin D is from natural sunlight exposure, because when ultraviolet rays hit they skin they trigger the natural production of the vitamin in the body. Supplementation with vitamin D3 is another viable option when sunlight exposure is limited, as it synthesizes easily in the body.
But the processed milk crusaders are claiming that processed milk is the best source of vitamin D, even though the type commonly used is vitamin D2, a form that is not that easily absorbed by the body. Vitamin D2 does not occur naturally in processed milk, and is added in such limited amounts that it hardly provides much significant benefit.
There are also better sources of potassium and calcium than processed milk, including bananas, nuts, beans and spinach, to name a few. And raw, grass-fed milk that has not been processed is another great natural source of vital nutrients, minerals and enzymes.

Honey Provides Antibiotic Benefits and a Low Glycemic Sweetener
January 14th, 2011
Natural News
By: Melanie Grimes
Honey provides a natural sweetener that can be used instead of sugar. Honey is a whole food that comes from plant nectar and does not raise blood sugar as other simple sugars do. Honey also contains a variety of minerals and vitamins and has a long history as a healing food. Honey has been used as an antiseptic, antimicrobial, and antibiotic.
Antibiotic Honey Kills Germs
Honey has long been used for its antibiotic properties and research has now demonstrated the mechanism. In an article published in the Journal of the Federation of American Society for Experimental Biology, scientists explain that a protein made by the bees called defensin-1 is the active germ-killing ingredient in honey. The researchers postulate that honey may even be able to treat diseases and infections that are antibiotic resistant such as MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus).
Vitamins and Minerals in Honey
Honey contains vitamin A, vitamin B2 or riboflavin B3 or nicotinic acid, B5 called pantothenic acid, vitamin C, biotin (also known as vitamin H) and rutine. Honey also contains many minerals: including calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, copper, iodine, and zinc. The bee pollen in honey contains a great deal of protein as well.
Antioxidants in Honey
Honey contains antioxidants. A study at the University of California demonstrated that consuming honey can raise antioxidant levels in the blood. The darker the honey, the more antioxidants it contains. Dark colored honey from Illinois buckwheat has been shown to have 20 times the antioxidant value as sage honey from California.
Skin Healing Properties of Honey
Because honey has antimicrobial and antiseptic properties, it can be used to heal skin conditions. Hundreds of cases have been published in medical journals demonstrating honey’s ability to cure wounds and burns. Honey kills bacteria in the skin and speeds the healing of burns. It can be used to treat sunburns as well.
Honey in History
Honey has been used as far back as Ancient Egypt. Pictured on ancient hieroglyphs and stored in tombs, honey was mentioned on the Rosetta Stone. King Menes, an Egyptian King from 4000 B.C, was known as the Beekeeper. The use of honey combined with wine and milk for healing was recorded in Egyptian medical texts written on papyrus.

US Warns of Liver Damage With Heart Drug
January 14th, 2011
AFP
A heart drug by French pharmaceutical giant Sanofi-Aventis has been linked to liver damage in some patients, two of whom had to receive transplants, the US Food and Drug Administration said Friday.
Dronedarone, marketed as Multaq, was approved in 2009 and has been prescribed at least 492,000 times to people in the United States for treating abnormal heart rhythm.
The FDA issued its warning to the public and to health professionals, saying labels to the medication would be changed to advise of possible liver dangers.
People taking the drug should call their doctor if they experience symptoms such as itching, yellow eyes or skin, dark urine, loss of appetite, or light-colored stools, the FDA said.
Two elderly women were found to have severe liver failure four and a half and six months after they began taking the drug, the FDA said.
Both had to have their livers removed and doctors could find no other reason why they would have sustained that degree of damage, the FDA said.
The drug is already not supposed to be given to patients who have severe heart failure or have recently been hospitalized for heart failure, the FDA said.
“In a study of patients with these conditions, patients given dronedarone had a greater than two-fold increase in risk of death,” the FDA said.
