Osteoporosis Medication May Cause Bone Fracture
February 25th, 2011

Drugs intended to fight osteoporosis may actually be causing what they’re designed to prevent: bone fractures. According to a new study published today in the Journal of the American Medical Association, drugs known as bisphosphonates, which are frequently taken by women to fight osteoporosis, have been associated with an increase in unusual fractures in the thigh bone. Women who took these drugs for five years or more may be at greater risk for these types of fractures.
“We weren’t able to study the cause of the thigh bone fractures, but we did find an association with increased risk among those who took the drugs over a long period,” lead study author Laura Park-Wyllie, a pharmaceutical safety and outcomes researcher at St. Michael’s Hospital and the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences, told AOL Health.
Park-Wyllie says the research was undertaken because of the increasing reports of thigh bone fractures among older women who take Fosamax, Actonel or Didrocal. The study authors found that women who took bisphosphonates were 2.5 times more likely to suffer from what are known as “atypical” or “unusual” fractures located below the hip, in the middle of the femur or thigh bone.
Overall, the researchers looked at 205,466 women over age 68 who had been prescribed bisphosphonates between 2002 and 2008. Of those women, only 716 (0.35 percent) had a fracture of the femur. Since the overall risk of thigh fractures is low, and because the drugs do prevent hip fractures, he researchers encourage women to continue taking their prescriptions.
“Our study provides strong evidence that there is an association, but I wouldn’t want women who are at high [osteoporosis] risk to worry about taking their drugs,” Park-Wyllie said. “The risks of a thigh fracture are still low — for women who were on the drugs for 5 years or more, it was 1 in 1000.”
Dr. Diane L Schneider, author of “The Complete Book of Bone Health,” says that many people who eventually suffer from these atypical fractures get a warning sign in the form of pain. “For a majority of people, pain proceeds these fractures,” she told AOL Health. “Some people say they had pain in their thigh for over a year. If you develop this type of pain, it’s important to consult with your doctor.”
Schneider says that the cause of the atypical fractures is still unknown, but that there could be a genetic predisposition. In the meantime, she believes that studies like this one are helpful because they bring more awareness to osteoporosis. “This should not scare people,” she says. “If you’re at low risk you could speak to your doctor about taking a ‘drug holiday’ or changing medications. But don’t just stop your medicine.”
Osteoporosis, which literally means “porous bones,” is a condition in which the bones become so weak and brittle that fractures are common. Even mild stresses like bending over or coughing can cause damage — most fractures occur in the wrists, spine or hips. Hip fractures are serious business and are a leading cause of disability in the elderly and can necessitate long-term care. In many individuals, a hip fracture can even lead to death, due to the extent that normal living is compromised by this type of injury. In fact, one in five women die within 12 months of a hip fracture.
Park-Wyllie says that although more research needs to be done, women who are not at high risk might consider talking to their doctors about reevaluating their medicines.

Monsanto’s Roundup Ready Crops Contain Organism Causing Animal Miscarriages
February 25th, 2011
The Huffington Post
By: Joanna Zelman
Recent research claims that Monsanto’s Roundup Ready genetically modified crops contain an organism, previously unknown to science, that can cause miscarriages in farm animals. This disturbing find comes on the heels of Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack’s decision to deregulate Roundup Ready Alfalfa (RRA). Roundup Ready is designed to survive Roundup, Monsanto’s weed-killing chemical.
Purdue University’s Emeritus Professor Don M. Huber presented the findings of the research, which observed the new organism using a 36,000X electron microscope. According to Treehugger, the organism can cause disease in both plants and animals, a rare feat.
Huber wrote an open letter to Vilsack requesting a moratorium on deregulating Roundup Ready crops. Huber states that Roundup Ready has a high concentration of an animal pathogen connected to “plant and animal diseases that are reaching epidemic proportions.” Huber finishes his letter by stating, “It deserves immediate attention with significant resources to avoid a general collapse of our critical agricultural infrastructure.”
A recent article in The Washington Post suggests that Roundup Ready Alfalfa is unnecessary and harmful to the farming community. When RRA is grown, reports suggest that weeds develop a resistant to Roundup. This has reportedly already happened to Roundup Ready corn, soybeans, and cottons. As The Washington Post remarks on GMOs, “You can’t recall them the way you can a car or a plastic toy. They’re out there for good. And no one knows what their full impact will be.” Although the impact of Roundup Ready Alfalfa has now become disturbingly more apparent.

Processed Food Lowers Kids’ IQ
February 25th, 2011
Organic Authority
By: Jill Ettinger
In the largest study of its kind recently published in The Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, toddlers who ate a diet higher in junk food were more prone to develop lower IQ levels later in life.
Nearly 14,000 children from Western England born between 1991 and 1992 participated in the program conducted by the School of Social and Community Medicine at the University of Bristol. Researchers looked at data provided by parents, which detailed dietary habits ranging from highly “processed” foods, “traditional” meat-oriented diets and one considered to be more “health conscious” with a focus on fruits, vegetables, pastas and rice.
Of the 14,000 in the program roughly 4,000 children provided complete data on their diets. When the children were 8.5 years old, they were given the Wechsler Intelligence Scale test that revealed there was a significant difference in IQ among those who had had the “processed” as opposed to the “health conscious” diets in early childhood. The study states, “the 20 percent of children who ate the most processed food had an average IQ of 101 points, compared with 106 for the 20 percent of children who ate the most “health-conscious” food.”
Vital nutrients may often be lacking in processed foods—even in those proclaiming to be “fortified” with vitamins and minerals—as scientists have long speculated that a certain unknown synthesis of nutrients occurs in whole foods versus isolation of key components.
Additional risks of processed foods include behavioral problems from artificial colors, flavors and other ingredients that have been linked to developmental issues, which could also be a factor in the decreased IQ levels.
IQ tests (intelligence quotient) have been used since the early 20th century to account for a number of factors in a child’s intelligence and cognitive development. Despite the effects of processed foods on IQ levels as proposed in the study, average IQ scores for many populations have been rising at an average rate of three points per decade since the early 20th century in a phenomenon called the Flynn effect.

Retired Colonel Says UFOs Are Real
February 25th, 2011
AOL News
By: Lee Spiegel
Whether you believe or disbelieve the notion that UFOs are visitors from another planet, a former highly decorated military officer now comes forward with information that may infuriate those on both sides in the ongoing ET debate.
Retired Col. John Alexander, using his military savvy and high security clearance, spent a quarter of a century going through the top levels of the U.S. government and military searching for the group of people who were allegedly responsible for UFO information and the supposedly decades-old UFO cover-up.
His conclusions: Not only is there no such group and no cover-up, but disclosure about UFOs has already occurred on different official levels.
With so many people crying out these days for the U.S. government or the United Nations or even the Vatican to issue some sort of “we are not alone in the universe” disclosure statement, Alexander says the information has been dripping out all around us, over decades, with top officials casually making statements about UFOs.
He references this 1950 remark made by President Harry Truman: “I can assure you the flying saucers, given that they exist, are not constructed by any power on Earth.”
“Disclosure has happened,” Alexander added. “It starts with former presidents Truman, Carter, Reagan and [the Soviet Union's] Gorbachev. I’ve got stacks of generals, including Soviet generals, who’ve come out and said UFOs are real. My point is, how many times do senior officials need to come forward and say this is real?” Alexander told AOL News.
“At one time, before a lot of this information was released, I could see both the classified and the unclassified material. And I will tell you that 98 percent of the information was already in the public domain. The only things that weren’t there was stuff like sources and method, which is protected, but the information about the incident was already out there.”
Several months ago, a group of ex-military officers came forward to discuss their experiences when UFOs reportedly tampered with American nuclear missile sites. While Alexander acknowledges the events, he suggests why there was no intense intelligence investigation of these incidents.
“They absolutely happened, but when it’s a one-time event, the attitude of investigators is: If it happens again, we’ll get nervous, but since it didn’t happen, put it aside.
“It’s sort of an indictment that says, despite overwhelming evidence of interaction with strategic systems, nothing was done. And in my view, it is put, like a number of things, in the too-tough-to-handle bin.”
The 74-year-old former Green Beret A-Team commander and developer of weapons at Los Alamos, N.M., is one of many speakers presenting his views at this week’s International UFO Congress in Scottsdale, Ariz. He takes issue with both true believers (who assume any strange light in the sky is from another planet) and hard-nosed skeptics (who debunk any and all UFO reports and evidence to the contrary).
In his new book, “UFOs: Myths, Conspiracies and Realities” (Thomas Dunne Books), Alexander jumps right to the chase, saying, “UFOs are real! With no prevarication or qualification of terms, there are physical objects of unknown origin that do transit our universe. The evidence that supports those statements is simply overwhelming.”
The evidence he speaks of includes the hard data of sensor technology that has frequently confirmed the reality of physical craft and the high quality of extremely reliable eyewitnesses who are “neither misreporting facts nor delusional.”
After spending decades deeply embroiled behind the scenes, Alexander’s assertion of the reality of UFOs still leaves the bigger question: What’s the origin and purpose of these unexplained machines? (If, in fact, they are machines in the sense that we use that term.)
“The problem is, when you discuss UFOs, we are talking everything from little balls of light to hard craft a mile or more across, and everything in between. So what is it?” Alexander asked.
“I argue that, not only are we not solving the problems yet, we’re not even asking the right questions, because we approach this wrong.
“I suspect that consciousness is a piece of the puzzle. We talk about UFOs, saying it’s a technology that’s 1,000 years in advance, but it really isn’t. If you follow the history of these things, usually it is somewhat in advance, but not beyond our comprehension by any stretch of the imagination.
“The conundrum you get into is, yes, they are seen by sensors; however, at other times, they are not seen by sensors that should’ve seen them, and that’s one I can’t answer.”
Alexander is a frequent guest on “Coast to Coast AM With George Noory,” the popular overnight radio program. George Knapp, a multiple Emmy Award-winning investigative reporter and a weekend “Coast to Coast” host, praises Alexander’s stance and suggests his book “will almost certainly infuriate zealots on both ends of the UFO spectrum.”

Checking Your pH
February 25, 2011 by KT
As promised on last week’s radio show, here is a helpful guide and information on how to check your pH from my good friends at Morter HealthSystem.
In scientific circles, pH stands for “potential of Hydrogen,” but as far as your body is concerned you could say it’s your “potential for Health!” By understanding how the pH levels of your body fluids affect your health, you will be able to take a look at your current level of health and, therefore, know if the choices you are making will be health enhancing or disease producing. That’s important because it means you can change your choices and change your health. The acidity or alkalinity of your body is measured in terms of pH. On a scale from 0 to 14, the more acid a solution, the lower the pH number, and the more alkaline, the higher the number.
You can test the pH of a substance by using strips of chemically treated paper. When immersed in the solution, the paper changes color to show the degree of acidity or alkalinity. Simple tests of your saliva and urine, you can do yourself, can give you a good idea of the pH levels of your body.
If you are healthy, both your saliva and urine should register around pH 7 when you first awaken after at least 5 hours of sleep. Urine pH tells you how your body is responding to the food you are eating. Saliva pH tells you how your body has adapted to your thinking and the stresses of your life.
If your urine or saliva pH is too acidic, your body will need alkalizing minerals in order to buffer that acid and survive the caustic effects. Alkalizing minerals are stored in many organs and tissues of the body. The liver is the greatest storehouse of sodium; the bones are the greatest storehouse of calcium. Yet, these storehouses can be emptied if the minerals that are used aren’t replaced. The food you eat determines how well your reserves are replenished.
Fresh fruits and vegetables contribute the usable alkalizing minerals you need to restock your alkaline reserve.
So, when there are enough reserves to buffer the acid produced naturally by cellular activity and by the food you eat, your urine pH and saliva pH will register around 7. Readings of considerably lower or higher pH than 7 usually indicate that your buffering reserves have been depleted and, over time, your body will be forced to accommodate by other means, namely getting those minerals from your bones and organs.
For its immediate survival, if you are seriously deficient in your alkaline reserve your body may have to buffer the acid with its own ammonia.
This will register as alkaline on your test paper when you test your urine, but it isn’t a sign of good health and you are likely not feeling well.
Here’s how you do it:
Using a pH test kit, which I recommend getting from Morter HealthSystem, check the pH of your first morning urine and record it for three days in a row. The results reflect your body’s ability to process your daily protein intake. This is possibly the single most important test you can do to check overall potential for health.
Day 1 _________ 2 __________ 3_________
With the same pH test kit, check the pH of your saliva. Push some saliva forward in your mouth with your tongue and dip the test strip directly into the fluid. Record the results.
Place a Chew CBerry® tablet, which you can purchase from Morter HealthSystem, in your mouth, without chewing the tablet, until it tastes sour. Remove the tablet. If you do not have access to theChew CBerry® tablet right away, you may use a few drops of lemon juice.

Brain Chemicals From Love Mimics Cocaine High
February 24th, 2011
ThirdAge.com
By: Eric Lander
Brain chemicals released when a person falls in love come from 12 parts of the brain — all releasing euphoria-inducing chemicals that create the same euphoric feeling as cocaine, U.S. researchers say. Stephanie Ortigue of Syracuse University and colleagues worldwide conducted a meta-analysis that finds falling in love can take one-fifth of a second and then the brain starts to release euphoria-inducing chemicals such as dopamine, oxytocin, adrenaline and vasopressin, but the heart is involved as well.
“I would say the brain, but the heart is also related because the complex concept of love is formed by both bottom-up and top-down processes from the brain to the heart and vice versa,” Ortigue says in a statement.
The analysis shows different parts of the brain are involved in love. For example, the unconditional love between a mother and a child include the middle of the brain, but passionate love is sparked by the reward part of the brain.
The meta-analysis also finds blood levels of nerve growth factor also increased when falling in love. This molecule plays an important role in the social chemistry of humans, or the phenomenon of “love at first sight,” Ortigue says.
Conversely, when love goes wrong, it can cause significant emotional stress and depression.
The findings are published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.

Sarah Ferguson in Tears After Queen’s Royal Snub

The Queen has sent out over 1,800 invitations to attend the wedding of grandson Prince William and Kate Middleton, but has not invited The Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson. Leaving Will’s auntie in tears over the Royal snub.
“Sarah is devastated that she hasn’t been invited,” a friend of the ex-royal tells me. “Hasn’t she been punished enough by the family? Sarah is down on her luck and this is the same as kicking a person while they are down.”
Sarah’s 10-year marriage to Prince Andrew ended in 1996 but recently made headlines after she was caught trying to sell press access to her ex-husband to an undercover reporter from The News of the World. Since then her already strained relationship with the palace has been almost non-existent.
“Sarah was hoping that the wedding would provide her with the opportunity to spend quality time with the family and prove she can and does deserve to be part of the family,” an insider tells me. “Any hope she ever had of being invited back into the fold is over. Sarah might be the last person on earth to finally get it but even she knows now she’s not welcome.”
The service will begin at Westminster Abby at 11:00 a.m. With Prince Harry serving as Best Man and Kate’s sister, Pippa, will be Maid of Honor.
The invitation that Sarah sadly did not receive reads: “The Lord Chamberlain is commanded by the Queen to invite [name] to the marriage of His Royal Highness Prince William of Wales, K.G. with Miss Catherine Middleton at Westminster Abbey on Friday, 29th April, 2011 at 11.00 a.m.”
Aside from family, friends and dignitaries, reported invitees include David and Victoria Beckham, Elton John and Kanye West.
“The Duchess will be watching the wedding on television just like the rest of the world, but not from England,” a friend tells me. “It will be too painful for her to be in London. She will be abroad. Once again trying to start her life knowing that kissing a prince doesn’t guarantee a happy ending.”

Defiant Crowds Demand Democracy in Bahrain
February 24, 2011 by Andrew

February 24th, 2011
AOL News
By: Hadeel al-Shalchi
Soldiers opened fire Friday on thousands of protesters defying a government ban and streaming toward the landmark square that had been the symbolic center of the uprising to break the political grip of the Gulf nation’s leaders.
Officials at the main Salmaniya hospital said at least 50 people were injured, some with gunshot wounds. Some doctors and medics on emergency medical teams were in tears as they tended to the wounded. X-rays showed bullets still lodged inside victims.
“This is a war,” said Dr. Bassem Deif, an orthopedic surgeon examining people with bullet-shattered bones.
Protesters described a chaotic scene of tear gas clouds, bullets coming from many directions and people slipping in pools of blood as they sought cover. Some claimed the gunfire came from either helicopters or sniper nests, a day after riot police swept through the protest encampment in Pearl Square, killing at least five people and razing the tents and makeshift shelters that were inspired by the demonstrators in Cairo’s Tahrir Square.
An Associated Press cameraman saw army units shooting anti-aircraft weapons, fitted on top of armored personnel carriers, above the protesters, in apparent warning shots and attempts to drive them back from security cordons about 200 yards (200 meters) from the square.
Then the soldiers turned firearms on the crowd, one marcher said.
“People started running in all directions and bullets were flying,” said Ali al-Haji, a 27-year-old bank clerk. “I saw people getting shot in the legs, chest, and one man was bleeding from his head.”
“My eyes were full of tear gas, there was shooting and there was a lot of panic,” said Mohammed Abdullah, a 37-year-old businessman taking part in the protest.
The clash came hours after funeral mourners and worshippers at Friday prayers called for the toppling of the Western-allied monarchy in the tiny island nation that is home to the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet, the centerpiece of the Pentagon’s efforts to confront Iranian military influence. Some members of Bahrain’s Sunni ruling system worry that Shiite powerhouse Iran could use Bahrain’s majority Shiites as a further foothold in the region.
U.S. President Barack Obama condemned the reports of violence against the protesters in Bahrain, Libya and Yemen, urging government restraint.
“I am deeply concerned about reports of violence in Bahrain, Libya and Yemen. The United States condemns the use of violence by governments against peaceful protesters in those countries and wherever else it may occur,” Obama said. “The United States urges the governments of Bahrain, Libya and Yemen to show restraint in responding to peaceful protests and to respect the rights of their people.”
Day by day, the crisis in Bahrain has deepened.
The cries against the king and his inner circle – at a main Shiite mosque and at burials for those killed in Thursday’s crushing attack – reflect a sharp escalation of the political uprising, which began with calls to weaken the Sunni monarchy’s power and address claims of discrimination against the Shiite majority.
The mood, however, has turned toward defiance of the entire ruling system after the brutal crackdown on a protest encampment in Bahrain’s capital, Manama, which put the nation under emergency-style footing with military forces in key areas and checkpoints on main roads.
“The regime has broken something inside of me. … All of these people gathered today have had something broken in them,” said Ahmed Makki Abu Taki at the funeral for his 23-year-old brother, Mahmoud, who was killed in the pre-dawn sweep through Pearl Square. “We used to demand for the prime minister to step down, but now our demand is for the ruling family to get out.”
At a Shiite mosque in the village of Diraz, an anti-government hotbed, imam Isa Qassim called the Pearl Square assault a “massacre” and thousands of worshippers chanted: “The regime must go.”
In a sign of Bahrain’s deep divisions, government loyalists filled Manama’s Grand Mosque to hear words of support for the monarchy and take part in a post-sermon march protected by security forces. Many arrived with Bahraini flags draped over the traditional white robes worn by Gulf men. Portraits of King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa were distributed.
“We must protect our country,” said Adnan al-Qattan, the cleric leading prayers. “We are living in dangerous times.”
He denounced attempts to “open the doors to evil and foreign influences” – an apparent reference to suspicions that Shiite powerhouse Iran could take advantages of any gains by Bahrain’s Shiites, who account for about 70 percent of the population.
The pro-government gathering had many nonnative Bahrainis, including South Asians and Sunni Arabs from around the region. Shiite have long complained of policies giving Sunnis citizenship and jobs, including posts in security forces, to offset the Shiite majority.
Outside a Shiite village mosque, several thousand mourners gathered to bury three of the men killed in the crackdown. The first body, covered in black velvet, was passed hand to hand toward a grave as it was being dug.
Amid the Shiite funeral rites, many chanted for the removal of the king and the entire Sunni dynasty that has ruled for more than two centuries in Bahrain – the first nation in the Gulf to feel the pressure for changes sweeping the Arab world.
