Some chemically enhanced caramel food colorings used in widely consumed cola drinks could cause cancer and should be banned, a U.S. consumer advocacy group urged the Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday.

Pure caramel is made from melted sugar; but two other versions approved to color food products include the chemical ammonia and produce compounds shown to cause various cancers in studies of animals, the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) said in a statement.

The group is petitioning the FDA to ban the ammonia-containing caramels, which are also used in other dark-colored soft drinks.

Coca-Cola Co, the world’s top soft drink maker, said the caramel it uses does not cause cancer. It said its cola only contains one of the compounds cited by CSPI, and that the compound — formed in the “browning reaction” while cooking — is found in trace amounts in a variety of food and drinks.

PepsiCo Inc referred a call to the American Beverage Association, while Dr Pepper Snapple Group Inc was not immediately available to comment.

Obesity is still a greater health threat from soda, the CSPI said. But the chemical reaction between sugar and ammonia can form carcinogens and “still may be causing thousands of cancers in the U.S. population,” the group said, citing animal studies conducted by government researchers at the National Institutes of Health’s National Toxicology Program.

“The American public should not be exposed to any cancer risk whatsoever as a result of consuming such chemicals, especially when they serve a non-essential, cosmetic purpose,” several of the NIH scientists wrote in a letter to the FDA.

CSPI executive director Michael Jacobson, in a statement, also said use of the words “caramel coloring” on food labels was misleading and should not be allowed.

The American Beverage Association fired back, calling CSPI’s claim a “scare tactic” and said there was no evidence that the compounds found in caramel coloring cause cancer in humans.

Iconic Symbol of America To Be Owned By The Germans

The Germans are coming to take over the New York Stock Exchange. In a move that would have been unimaginable even two years ago, the German Deutsche Bourse will be merging with the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) to create the world’s largest stock exchange on earth. The annual trading volume will exceed $20 trillion creating a true monster in the financial space. That is if all the regulatory, cultural and financial hurdles can be successfully crossed. Talk of monopoly issues, the wisdom in permitting foreign control of an American institution, and even debates over the name of the new exchange are poised to hamper this so-called merger of equals.

This $10.3 billion transaction will swap each NYSE Euronext share for 0.47 shares of the newly formed exchange. Existing shareholders in the Deutsche Bourse will receive a one to one exchange rate with their shares. It’s critical to note that the Deutsche Bourse will control 60% of the newly formed exchange board of director seats. This seems to me to throw off the concept of a merger of equals. In addition, although it appears that the German deal is in the bag, rumors are swirling about that the Chicago Mercantile Exchange or even the Nasdaq may be making counter offers for the mighty New York institution.

How will this expected merger affect individual traders and investors? First, its not expected to close any time soon, therefore there will likely be no changes for at least six months. That time frames is generous, assuming there is no legal action or other snags that get in the way. Once the merger is complete, it should benefit individual investors by providing greater choice, products and efficiency. The greater efficiency should result in lowering of costs across the board for everyone. I applaud this merger and welcome the change with open arms.

Many of the scenes broadcast from Egpyt in recent days have been joyful, but events took a horrific turn for CBS News correspondent Lara Logan on Feb. 11, the day that former president Hosni Mubarak resigned.

CBS News has issued a statement saying on that day, Logan was physically and sexually assaulted by members of the crowd when she was separated from her news crew. The photo here was taken moments before the attack began.

Logan “was covering the jubilation in Tahrir Square for a ’60 Minutes’ story when she and her team and their security were surrounded by a dangerous element amidst the celebration,” according to the statement. “It was a mob of more than 200 people whipped into a frenzy.”

“She was surrounded and suffered a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating before being saved by a group of women and an estimated 20 Egyptian soldiers,” the statement continued.

“She reconnected with the CBS team, returned to her hotel and returned to the United States on the first flight the next morning. She is currently in the hospital recovering,” according to CBS News.

Several members of the media were roughed up as they tried to cover events in Egypt. CNN’s Anderson Cooper was beaten by hostile members of one crowd as he walked the streets on one volatile day. But the ordeal of Logan, who has covered some of the most dangerous hot spots in the world in her wide-ranging career as a news correspondent, sounds particularly horrible.

We can only hope that she is surrounded by friends and family as she recovers from this awful incident. CBS News said it would have no further comment on the matter.

Maybe online etiquette should be part of the curriculum — for teachers.

Bucks County, Pa., high school English teacher Natalie Munroe has been suspended after writing insulting comments about students, parents and other teachers on her public blog.

DoylestownPatch spoke with Jeffrey Shoolbraid, a former student of Munroe’s at Central Bucks East. According to Shoolbraid, a current student discovered Munroe’s blog and forwarded the link to other past and present CB East students.

Parents found out about the blog and complained to school officials, says CBS Philly. When confronted, Munroe admitted she’d written the blog.

Munroe’s blog, NataliesHandBasket.blogspot.com, has been shut down, but its contents are still visible thanks to Google’s cache. Its header reads “Where are we going, and why are we in this handbasket?”

In January Munroe wrote a long post describing the comments she wished she could enter on her students’ evaluations, noting at the outset that she was “being a renegade” and blogging at work.

Among the 39 barbs she listed:

• “I hear the trash company is hiring.”
• “I called out sick a couple of days just to avoid your son.”
• “Rude, beligerent [sic], argumentative f**k.”
• “Just as bad as his sibling. Don’t you know how to raise kids?”
• “Asked too many questions and took too long to ask them. The bell means it’s time to leave!”
• “Nowhere near as good as her sibling. Are you sure they’re related?”
• “Shy isn’t cute in 11th grade; it’s annoying. Must learn to advocate for himself instead of having Mommy do it.”
• “Too smart for her own good and refuses to play the school ‘game’ such that she’ll never live up to her true potential here.”
• “Am concerned that your kid is going to come in one day and open fire on the school. (Wish I was kidding.)”
Munroe concluded: “These comments, I think, would serve me well when filling out the cards. Only, I don’t think parents want to hear these truths. Thus, the old addage [sic] … if you don’t have anything nice to say … say ‘cooperative in class.’ ”

Indeed.

France Wants to End the Dollar

RTE News and Business

France, as current head of the Group of 20 countries, will help the transition to a global financial system based on ‘several international currencies’, French Economy Minister Christine Lagarde said today.

Lagarde, speaking ahead of a G20 finance ministers meeting in Paris on Friday and Saturday, said the world had to move on from the ‘non-monetary system’ it now has to one ‘based on several international currencies’.

Accordingly, France wants to see less need for countries, especially the emerging economies, to accumulate huge foreign reserves, she said.

At the same time, international capital flows should be better regulated and the role of the Special Drawing Rights issued by the International Monetary Fund should be reinforced by the inclusion of China’s yuan in the system.

China, whose booming economy now ranks second only to the US in size after overtaking Japan, has accumulated massive forex reserves of more than $2.5 trillion on the back of its sustained trade surpluses and foreign fund inflows.

Washington says the build-up reflects an unfair undervaluation of the yuan, a charge Beijing rejects.

France has previously said it wanted to see the global financial system reduce its reliance on the dollar for a more broad-based arrangement.

Added Sugars Linked to Risk of Heart Disease In Teenagers

Although most people still believe that eating saturated fats and cholesterol is the greatest risk factor in developing heart disease, the real threat comes from refined sugars in the diet. A new study finds that even teenagers who consume too many added sugars in soft drinks and foods develop high cholesterol and may have higher risk of heart disease as adults.

The research, published in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association, followed 2,157 teenagers aged 12 to 18 as part of the National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHANES). The teenagers were consuming an average of 119 grams of added sugar daily which equates to over 28 teaspoons or 476 calories, and represented over 21 percent of their diet.

Researchers found that teens consuming the most added sugars (more than 30 percent of total calories) had lower levels of high density lipoprotein (HDL), the good cholesterol, and higher levels of both triglycerides and low density lipoproteins (LDL), the bad cholesterol.

“Added sugars” were defined by the researchers as any caloric sweeteners added to foods or beverages by the manufacturer during processing or by the consumer. According to the researchers, previous studies have indicated that the largest contributors of added sugars to the diet are sugary beverages such as sodas, fruit drinks, coffees and teas.

Teenagers with the highest levels of added sugar had good HDL cholesterol levels that were nine percent lower than those with the lowest sugar consumption. Their bad LDL levels were also nine percent higher. In addition, triglyceride levels of the highest users were 10 percent higher than those using the least amount of added sugars. Finally, overweight or obese adolescents with the highest levels of added sugar consumption showed increased signs of insulin resistance.

The researchers expressed the concern that with long-term exposure, the unfavorable cholesterol profiles of these adolescents would place them at risk for heart disease later in adulthood. Previous research had only focused on adults.

In 2009, the American Heart Association issued a new scientific statement recommending that women limit their intake of added sugars to 100 calories per day and that men limit their daily intake to 150 calories. That equates to a maximum of 6 to 9 teaspoons daily, at 16 calories per teaspoon.

Unfortunately, food labels don’t let you know how many teaspoons of sugar you’re eating. First of all, they measure everything in grams rather than teaspoons. Secondly, they don’t tell you how many sugar grams are added to the product versus how many are naturally occurring as, for example, lactose in dairy products and fructose in products containing fruit. That problem won’t be solved until the government changes food labeling laws to require specific disclosure of added sugars.

Each 4 grams of sugar on the label is one teaspoon, or 16 calories. So your maximum 6 to 9 teaspoons will be equivalent to 24 to 36 grams on a food label.

The researchers recommended that both adolescents and adults should use the nutrition labels on drinks and food to become familiar with the amount of sugar in them, and to replace sugar laden drinks with water to substantially reduce sugar and calories.

Swine Flu Vaccine Linked to 900 percent Increased Risk of Developing Narcolepsy

Natural News

By: Ethan A. Huff

The World Health Organization (WHO) is currently investigating reports from 12 different countries claiming that the H1N1 (swine flu) vaccination is responsible for causing narcolepsy, a disorder involving extreme chronic fatigue and the tendency to fall asleep suddenly and without warning. One of the reports from Finland, for instance, found that children who received the swine flu vaccine were 900 percent more likely to develop narcolepsy than non-vaccinated children.

“Since August 2010, following widespread use of vaccines against influenza (H1N1) 2009, cases of narcolepsy, especially in children and adolescents, have been reported from at least 12 countries,” said WHO. ” Officials admit the concerns are valid and say they will look into them further, but WHO continues to recommend swine flu vaccines anyway, including GlaxoSmithKline’s (GSK) Pandemrix.

The Finnish study, which was released by Finland’s National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL), stopped short of fully blaming the vaccines, adding a caveat about a possible “joint effect of the vaccine and some other factor(s).” But the vaccine is clearly correlated to the condition, and by all preliminary appearances, seems to be a primary causative factor.

Considering WHO’s lead role in promoting the swine flu “pandemic” that led to mass vaccination campaigns in the first place, it is highly unlikely that this corrupt agency will ever come out and condemn swine flu vaccines, no matter how many reports and studies emerge. After all, admission that the vaccines were not all they were claimed to be would expose the agency as a purveyor of lies.

Early in 2010, the truth came out that WHO’s pandemic was nothing more than an organized farce to generate fear and reap obscene profits. Drug companies were exposed for putting pressure on WHO to declare a pandemic in order to push their vaccines. GlaxoSmithKline’s Pandemix raked in over $1.4 billion as a result of the scare campaign.

Flu Vaccines and Neurological Problems

February 16, 2011 by Andrew

Natural News

By: Rosemary Mathis

Neurological problems due to nerve damage after vaccination are a fairly common adverse event with flu vaccines. In 1976, there were more cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome reported after vaccination than there were confirmed cases of Swine flu.

Every vaccine on the market is associated with certain risks. Flu vaccines are no exception. As government agencies and medical authorities around the world urge entire populations to protect themselves from the latest strains of flu, little is said about the potential risks associated with this year’s miracle cures.

The 1976 swine flu vaccination campaign was abruptly halted when 500 cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) were diagnosed after vaccination. GBS is a rare, life threatening disease in which the body’s immune system attacks peripheral nerves (those outside the brain and spinal cord) destroying the myelin sheath surrounding them. This destruction leads to a multitude of possible symptoms, usually beginning with weakness or tingling in the legs. The unusual sensations increase in intensity until the muscles can no longer be used. Symptoms progress rapidly toward the upper body, sometimes resulting in total paralysis and death.

Guillain-Barre Syndrome is associated with several flu vaccines, the most common being swine flu vaccine. There is no cure for GBS, but therapy can sometimes lessen the severity and restore some of the original muscle function.

Guillain-Barre Syndrome is considered to be a severe enough threat that prior to the 2009 flu season, the Health Protection Agency in the United Kingdom sent a warning letter to 600 neurologists throughout the country telling them to watch for GBS symptoms because it could be triggered by the swine flu vaccine. This letter sparked a huge protest when leaked to the public because the Health Protection Agency did nothing to warn the millions of potential recipients of the vaccine prior to their National Flu Vaccination Campaign.

Nerve damage resulting from flu vaccines can also present itself as Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP). CIDP is closely related to GBS in the fact that it is also a result of nerve damage caused by destruction of the myelin sheaths surrounding peripheral nerves. CIDP also begins with unusual sensations in the arms and legs, progressive weakness and loss of muscle use. The only real difference between GBS and CIDP is the latter does not come on so suddenly and is a long-lasting or chronic condition.

On 1 February 2011, The Washington Post published, “Finland: link between swine flu shot, narcolepsy.”? Narcolepsy is a rare neurological disorder that causes the brain to be unable to regulate a person’s sleep cycles. A person with nerve damage causing this disorder could be talking to you and suddenly just fall asleep for a few seconds, minutes, or hours. Of the 60 young people in Finland who were diagnosed with this disorder during the 2009 flu season, almost 90 percent had recently received a vaccine to combat the flu. It seems medical consumers are left with a serious question. Is it better to take your chances with the flu, or take your chances with a flu vaccine?

SaneVax believes only Safe, Affordable, Necessary & Effective vaccines and vaccination practices should be offered to the public. Our primary goal is to provide scientific information/resources for those concerned about vaccine safety, efficacy and need.
