The chief sponsors of a bill to expand oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico and open the coastal waters of Virginia for exploration have received more than $8.8 million combined in campaign donations from the oil and gas industry, a review of campaign finance records shows.
On Thursday, the House of Representatives passed the Restarting American Offshore Leasing Now Act by a 266 to 149 margin. The measure would force the federal government to conduct three lease auctions in those areas by June 2012. It is considered the first step in a GOP-led process to loosen restrictions on offshore drilling. Authored by House Natural Resources Chairman Doc Hastings (R-Wash.), it faces a much closer vote in the Senate as well as the stated opposition of the Obama administration.
Nevertheless, the bill’s passage in the people’s chamber underscores the extent to which the political world has moved beyond the concerns over domestic drilling that arose in the wake of last year’s historic oil spill in the Gulf. It also serves as another reminder that, in the halls of Congress, certain legislative power comes with financial prowess.
A review of data compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics shows that the 67 co-sponsors of the act received a combined total of at least $8,887,000 in campaign contributions from the oil and gas industry during the course of their careers. For at least ten of those members, the oil and has industry was their biggest career contributor.

No More Infant Dose of OTC Acetaminophen
May 6, 2011
ABC News
By John Gever
Over-the-counter drug makers have announced that they will no longer produce acetaminophen in concentrated infant drops; liquid acetaminophen products for children under 12 will be sold only in a 160 mg/5 mL concentration.
The Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA), the chief trade group for OTC drug manufacturers, indicated the move is intended to reduce dosing errors.
Currently, liquid acetaminophen formulations for children ages 2 to 11 come in the 160 mg/5 mL strength, but more concentrated products — 80 mg/0.8 mL and 80 mg/1.0 mL — are sold for infants, with droppers for administration.
“CHPA member companies are voluntarily making this conversion to one concentration to help make it easier for parents and caregivers to appropriately use single-ingredient liquid acetaminophen,” said CHPA president and CEO Scott Melville in a statement.

Prolonged Bottle Feeding Boosts Kids’ Obesity Risk
May 6, 2011

Babies who are still drinking from a bottle at 2 years of age may be prone to obesity by the time they turn 5, a new study suggests.
For the study, researchers analyzed data on 6,750 children who participated in the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Birth Cohort, which included kids from around the United States born in 2001.
About 22 percent of the children continued to use bottles regularly at 24 months of age, meaning they mainly drank from a bottle or were put to bed with one.
At age 5 1/2, about 23 percent of the children who drank from a bottle at age 2 were obese, compared to about 16 percent of kids who’d stopped using a bottle by age 2, according to the study.
That makes children still using a bottle at age 2 about 33 percent more likely to be obese than children who were weaned sooner, the researchers said.
One likely explanation for the finding: kids who are still drinking from a bottle at age 2 are probably consuming more calories than they need, the study authors said.
“At older ages, the bottle is probably used for comfort and convenience rather than nourishment,” said study lead author Rachel Gooze, a doctoral candidate in public health at Temple University’s Center for Obesity Research and Education in Philadelphia.
The study will be published in an upcoming issue of The Journal of Pediatrics.
Children were considered obese if their body mass index [BMI, a ratio of weight to height] was at or above the 95th percentile for their age. The proportion of 5-year-olds in the study who were obese roughly tracked other national statistics that place obesity rates among pre-schoolers at about one in five, Gooze said.
Experts have long encouraged parents to wean children from the bottle around age one.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry advises parents to wean children from a bottle at about ages 12 to 14 months, and to avoid putting a baby to bed with a bottle to avoid tooth decay.
The American Academy of Pediatrics has a similar recommendation, cautioning that “the bottle [should] be given up entirely at around age one and almost certainly by eighteen months.”

Superman Renouncing American Citizenship

…Superman announces that he is going to give up his U.S. citizenship. Despite very literally being an alien immigrant, Superman has long been seen as a patriotic symbol of “truth, justice, and the American way,” from his embrace of traditional American ideals to the iconic red and blue of his costume. What it means to stand for the “American way” is an increasingly complicated thing, however, both in the real world and in superhero comics, whose storylines have increasingly seemed to mirror current events and deal with moral and political complexities rather than simple black and white morality.
The key scene takes place in “The Incident,” a short story in Action Comics #900 written by David S. Goyer with art by Miguel Sepulveda. In it, Superman consults with the President’s national security advisor, who is incensed that Superman appeared in Tehran to non-violently support the protesters demonstrating against the Iranian regime, no doubt an analogue for the recent real-life protests in the Middle East. However, since Superman is viewed as an American icon in the DC Universe as well as our own, the Iranian government has construed his actions as the will of the American President, and indeed, an act of war.

Trump Booed At WH Correspondents’ Dinner

Donald Trump didn’t appear to have many fans at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on Saturday.
The Wrap reports that the media mogul was greeted by a round of “boos” upon his arrival to Washington’s Hilton Hotel with his wife, Melania:
After giving a brief interview with a group of several of media outlets, Trump — who was invited to the event as a guest of the Washington Post — walked away to a chorus of audible boos from the media members on the press line. (And it wasn’t because they wanted to hear Trump talk more.)
While waiting in line on the red carpet, Trump told the Wall Street Journal‘s Washington Wire that he wouldn’t be afraid to give President Barack Obama a piece of his mind that evening, should the two have a chance to speak. “He’s gotta get tough with all the nations that are ripping off the U.S.,” such as China, he told the Journal he would say to the president.
Trump has been no stranger to the press in recent weeks. On Tuesday he took credit for the release of Obama’s birth certificate, saying the disclosure made him “proud” and “honored to play such a big role” in its release, but that “I want to look at it” before confirming its authenticity.
Later, at an event Thursday in Las Vegas, he again made headlines for calling America’s leaders “stupid” and declaring the United States was “not a great country” before erupting in a chorus of curses.
While Trump has yet to confirm his widely-speculated presidential candidacy, during the same Las Vegas appearance he responded to a supporter’s cries of “run for president!” by replying, “I think I’m going to make you very happy on that.”

Researchers Find Genes Linked To Most Common Form of Breast Cancer
May 3, 2011
The Telegraph
By Stephen Adams
The genes could lead to new ways of diagnosing and treating hormonal breast cancer, also known as oestrogen receptor positive breast cancer, which is responsible for four out of five cases, or 36,000 a year in Britain.
In particular, they found one gene which appears to drive the growth of tumours.
The scientists, from the Breakthrough Breast Cancer Research Centre at The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) in London, said the discovery could in the future help patients whose breast cancers do not respond to drugs like tamoxifen.
They located the genes – named C6ORF96, C6ORF97 and C6ORF211 – in a very well studied part of the human genome, next to the oestrogen receptor gene, which is the main driver of hormonal breast cancer.
Dr Anita Dunbier, lead author of the study, which is published in the journal PLoS Genetics, said: “This is a surprising discovery. We found these genes in a place we thought we knew a lot about – it is like finding gold in Trafalgar Square.
