Anglers Banned From Using White Bread As Bait Because It Makes Fish Fat

A fishery has become the first in the country to veto white bread amid fears it is unhealthy for the fish.

Instead, fishermen have been urged to cast out pieces of wholemeal and granary bread into lakes.

Experts say white bread lacks the protein that brown slices contain and too much of it leaves fish bloated, lethargic and with bad guts.

Anglers tend to throw bait onto the surface of the water to attract fish like carp to their “peg” on the bank and bread is often a popular choice.

White bread has also been commonly used as a hook-bait for centuries and is even referenced in the fisherman’s Bible The Compleat Angler by Izaak Walton in 1653.

But a fishery in Hampshire has become the first in the country to take the unusual step of banning it because of the poor dietary effects it has on the fish.

In some cases, anglers are getting through up to eight loaves in one fishing trip.

The move follows a sporadic trend across the country of members of the public being banned by local authorities from throwing white bread to ducks.

Graham Mabey, whose company FLE Angling own Greenridge Farm Fishery near Romsey, defended the scheme, saying they did not want to “discourage the tactic of using a surface bait”.

“But we found that people were turning up with up to eight loaves of white bread which is an extraordinary amount,” he said.

“People leave whole discarded slices floating on the water as well as on the banks which can attract rats.

“The salt and sugar levels in white and brown loaves are similar but in a typical white sliced loaf there is 3.5 grams of protein per slice compared to the 5.6 grams in brown bread.”

He added: “There is not much nutritional content in the white bread compared to the brown.

“It’s just like people, the fish tend to get lethargic and bloated if they consume too much white bread.

“We have put a note on our website and on our board of rules that no white bread is allowed. We’d rather baits that are better for the fish and will give them a normal healthy gut were used.”

Other fisheries have outlawed other bizarre baits in the past such as cat food.

In his book on angling, Izaak Walton wrote: “As you are fishing chew a little white or brown bread in your mouth and cast it into the pond, about the place where your float swims.

“And yet I shall tell you that the crumbs of white bread and honey made into a paste is a good bait for carp.”

But many anglers expressed doubt that white bread can harm fish.

Malcolm Coller, of the Carp Society, said: “In my experience bait bans are the last refuge of the uninformed.

“Carp have been around since Biblical times so they will probably survive eating white bread.

“But if it is being done because of the quantity of bread being used then I can understand it because too much of one thing isn’t good for anybody.”
Ian Wellby, a fish health scientist, said: “If I were advising a fishery owner I would question the necessity of a ban as white bread is unlikely to do any harm in a fishery.

“Fish are pretty canny and will go looking for something else which means anglers will stop catching on it and switch to another bait.

“If there is a problem such as fish looking unhealthy you would need to start looking at supplementary feeding and instead of a bread ban I would suggest selling bags of coarse fish pellets very cheaply to encourage their use.”

An apple a day no longer keeps the doctor away

Yesterday, a health advocacy group released a report analyzing government data on 53 fruits and vegetables, identifying the most and least pesticides after washing and peeling.

Apples moved up a shocking three spots from last year, concluding that 92% of apples contain two or more pesticides. Strawberries and imported grapes are also on the list of worst offenders.

This is scary information, especially since we all rely on fruits and vegetables to get the necessary nutrients to live a healthy lifestyle.

Why did the chicken cross the road?

The answer is, to get to the hospital emergency room! This weekend it was reported that the FDA is FINALLY admitting that chicken meat, the same chicken meat that you eat regularly, contains cancer-causing arsenic, which is fatal in high doses. What’s even more disturbing is the fact that it is added to the chicken feed ON PURPOSE!!!

How can the government allow this?! Now, first things first, do not panic. There are things you can do to avoid falling victim to this new vital information!

Number one, take action on the damage that is already done. Do a cleanse. My recommendations are either The BePure Cleanse or The McCombs Plan. If this is your first cleanse, I would suggest doing The BePure Cleanse. It is gentle and you won’t have to change your diet too much. If you want to super detox, The McCombs Plan is the way to go. Both will result in fantastic health, so look into your options and pick the one that best fits your needs.

Number two, stop buying conventional meat and poultry! Buy only organic. My favorite place to buy meat and poultry is from U.S. Wellness Meats. I trust them and my freezer is stocked with their products.

More than 60,000 Americans were sterilised, many against their will, as part of a eugenics movement that finished in 1979, aimed at keeping the poor and mentally ill from having children. Now, decades on, one state is considering compensation.

In 1968, Elaine Riddick was raped by a neighbour who threatened to kill her if she told what happened.

She was 13, the daughter of violent and abusive parents in the desperately poor country town of Winfall, in the US state of North Carolina.

While she was in hospital giving birth, the state violated her a second time, she says.

A social worker who had deemed her “feeble-minded” petitioned the state Eugenics Board to have her sterilised.

Officials coerced her illiterate grandmother into signing an “x” on an authorisation form. After performing a Caesarean section, doctors sterilised her “just like cutting a hog”, she says.

“They killed my kids,” Ms Riddick says. “They killed mine before they got to me. They stopped it.”

Sterilisation in the UK and Europe

While eugenics is now recognised as a pseudoscience – and after the Nazis, one with murderous consequences – it was once a respectable branch of the social sciences.

The term ‘eugenics’, meaning “good birth”, was coined in 1883 by Sir Francis Galton, an English scientist who pushed the University College London to found a department to study the field.

Sir Winston Churchill once called for forced sterilisation of “the feeble-minded and insane classes”.

While eugenic sterilisation never became official policy in the UK – in part due to opposition from the Catholic church – Finland, Norway, and Sweden adopted the sterilisation laws in the 1930s.

Between 1933 and 1945, more than 400,000 Germans were sterilised under Nazi “racial hygiene” laws, according to the US Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Nearly four decades after the last person was sterilised under North Carolina’s eugenics programme, a state task force is seeking the 2,900 victims of sterilisation officials estimate are still alive.

The group hopes to gather their stories and ultimately to recommend the state award them restitution. But with public coffers under severe pressure amid a flagging recovery, it is not clear the legislature will agree.

“I know I can’t make it right but at least I can address it,” said North Carolina state legislator Larry Womble. He hopes “to let the world know what a horrendous thing the government has perpetrated on these young boys and girls”.

America’s sterilisation movement was part of a broad effort to cleanse the country’s population of characteristics and social groups deemed unwanted, an effort that included anti-race mixing and strict immigration quotas aimed at Eastern Europeans, Jews and Italians.

Beginning with Indiana in 1907, 32 states eventually passed laws allowing authorities to order the sterilisation of people deemed unfit to breed. The last programme ended in 1979.

The victims were criminals and juvenile delinquents, women deemed sexual deviants, homosexual men, poor people on welfare, people who were mentally ill or suffered from epilepsy. African Americans and Hispanic Americans were disproportionately targeted in some states.

Author Exposes Organizations for Losing War Against Cancer

A new book by leading cancer expert, Dr. Samuel S. Epstein, skewers the National Cancer Institute and American Cancer Society and blames the organizations for America losing the war against cancer.

In the book, “National Cancer Institute and American Cancer Society: Criminal Indifference to Cancer Prevention and Conflicts of Interest,” Epstein argues that the NCI and ACS have spent tens of billions of taxpayer and charity dollars focusing on treatment to the exclusion of prevention, which has allowed cancer rates to skyrocket, with the disease now affecting nearly one in two men and more than one in three women. Furthermore, the author claims that not only do numerous conflicts of interest exist within the NCI and ACS, but the NCI and ACS are also withholding a mass of information on avoidable causes of cancer.

Epstein, who has served as a consultant for the U.S. Senate Committee on Public Works, is an internationally recognized authority on avoidable causes of cancer, particularly carcinogen exposure through conduits such as food, air, water, household products, cosmetics, prescription drugs or industrial carcinogens in the workplace.

Chemical Used in Food Containers Added to U.S. List of Carcinogens

The widely used preservative formaldehyde, and styrene, found in food containers and coffee cups, are among eight agents added to a list of known and suspected carcinogens by the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

Formaldehyde, linked to leukemia and a rare type of nasal cancer, is “known to be a human carcinogen,” according to the congressionally mandated report published today on the health agency’s website. Styrene is categorized by researchers as “reasonably anticipated” to be cancer-causing.

The new compounds bring the total number of substances linked to cancer to 240. Aristolochic acids, found in herbal products used to treat arthritis and gout, were also listed as a known carcinogen because they can cause bladder or urinary-tract cancer in people with kidney disease. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration cautioned consumers against taking supplements containing aristolochic acid in 2001, according to the report.

“A listing in the report does not by itself mean that a substance will cause cancer,” said John Bucher, associate director of the National Toxicology Program of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, in a conference call with reporters.

The cancer-causing risk from formaldehyde and styrene comes from the products’ widespread use in industrial applications and less from their presence in consumer products, Bucher said.

Bariatric Surgery Doesn’t Help Obese Live Longer

Getting bariatric surgery will not decrease mortality several years after the surgery, according to a study published in JAMA.

Although the weight-loss surgery has been shown to decrease weight and diminish diabetes, the older, severely obese male patients in the study were not living longer because of the procedure.

The study was to be presented Sunday at the Academy Health Annual Research Meeting.

For the severely obese, bariatric surgery is one of the most effective ways to reduce weight. The most common bariatric surgery is gastric bypass, which creates a small stomach pouch that restricts food intake.

The study conducted at Veteran Affairs medical centers followed 850 veterans who had bariatric surgery from January 2000 to December 2006.

When study authors compared the raw rates, patients who had surgery had lower mortality rates with 6.8 percent versus 15.2 percent after six years.

But when researchers compared the 850 veterans to 1,694 similar patients who did not have bariatric surgery, they found that surgery was not significantly associated with reducing mortality.

Matthew Maciejewski, of Durham VA Medical Center and colleagues concluded that “bariatric surgery does not appear to be associated with survival during a mean of 6.7 years of follow-up.”
