Obama Will Not Cancel Vacation Over Economic Woes

President Barack Obama has no plans to cancel his summer vacation to deal with the US debt crisis and market turmoil sparked by fears over Europe’s finances, the White House said Wednesday.
The president is due to head to his normal summer vacation spot on Martha’s Vineyard, an upscale resort island off the coast of Massachusetts, later in the month with his family.
But as turmoil rocks world stock markets and fears of a second recession mount, some commentators have called on Obama to stay in Washington and recall Congress to discuss ways to create jobs and reboot the stagnant recovery.
“I don’t think Americans out there would begrudge that notion that the president would spend some time with his family,” said White House spokesman Jay Carney,” arguing that Obama was working round the clock to fix the economy.
“There’s no such thing as a presidential vacation. The presidency travels with you. He will be in constant communication and get regular briefings from his national security team, as well as his economic team.
“And he will, of course, be fully capable if necessary of traveling back if that were required. It’s not very far.”
Obama’s vacations have been frequently interrupted by the events which pull a president back into the public eye, even when he is trying to recharge his batteries away from the cameras.
Two years ago, he left his rented vacation farmhouse on Martha’s Vineyard to attend the funeral in Boston of senator Edward Kennedy, his friend and political mentor who died of brain cancer.
During his Christmas holiday in 2009 in his native Hawaii, Obama was criticized for responding too slowly to an alleged attempt by a Nigerian man to bring down a US airliner over Detroit with explosives sewn into his underwear.
Obama is enduring one of the most testing periods of his presidency, and facing a volley of unusually harsh media criticism after many commentators said he came off second best in a debt showdown with Republicans.
He has said he will unveil a new set of measures to create jobs and cut the US deficit in the coming weeks and will leave for vacation next week after a three-day bus tour of midwestern states hit hard by the recession.

British Prime Minister Vows ‘Uncompromising Measures’ In Dealing With Riots

Reporting from London— Facing a full house at an emergency meeting of Parliament Prime Minister David Cameron promised “robust and uncompromising measures” in response to the riots that have plagued Britain since Saturday.
Facing a full house at an emergency meeting of Parliament on Thursday, Prime Minister David Cameron promised “robust and uncompromising measures” in response to the riots that have plagued Britain since Saturday.
“To the lawless minority, the criminals who have taken what they could, we will hunt you. … We will punish you,” he said.
He vowed stronger police powers including the ability to unmask rioters, greater coordination between police and the community, and compensation funds for victims of violence and arson.
Speaking to a packed house of lawmakers called back from vacation, Cameron said police admitted that they were initially unprepared for and outnumbered during the flash riots, but he praised officers and community workers who struggled to protect neighborhoods.
To victims of the violence, Cameron pledged damage compensation, even for the uninsured. “We will help you repair the damage, get your businesses back up and running, and support your communities,” he said. Claims are expected to reach over $300 million.
However, budget cuts in police services, part of the government’s overall plan to reduce a huge deficit, would not be lifted, Cameron said, answering opposition questions to defer the measures.
Police would receive any “funds they need to meet the cost of any legitimate aims,” but plans to reduce their overall budget by 6% over the next four years would go ahead, he said.
Among their new powers, the prime minister said, would be the ability “under any circumstances” to demand that crime suspects remove face coverings. Many looters who ransacked shops during the riots wore masks to avoid being identified.
Crowd-dispersal and curfew regulations would also be reviewed, Cameron said.
He described what he sees as the underlying causes of the recent violence: a culture of disrespect for authority, gang culture, and children growing up in dysfunctional families.
Gang injunctions would be used across the whole country for children and for adults, he said. Other sanctions are already in place — local authorities, for exampled, can evict perpetrators of violence and disorder from subsidized housing — but they could be strengthened, he said.
“We can go further with getting to grips with gangs,” he said, noting the efforts of people such as William J. Bratton, who headed police forces in New York and Los Angeles.
Bratton is said to have been suggested as a possible outside candidate for the now-vacant post of chief commissioner for Scotland Yard.
As Cameron spoke, courts around the country were struggling to handle riot-linked cases that are pouring in, some conducting around-the-clock sessions. By Thursday, the number of arrests stood at about 922, police said, but the figure was increasing hourly.

Red, Processed Meat Linked to Higher Risk of Type 2 Diabetes
August 11th, 2011
USA Today

Eating processed meats and red meat regularly increases your risk of type 2 diabetes, a large new study shows.
Researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health analyzed dietary-intake data from more than 200,000 men and women in the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study and the Nurses’ Health Studies. The participants have been tracked for a decade or more.
The scientists also did a larger analysis, combining their data and that from other published studies to analyze the diets of 442,101 people. About 28,000 of these people developed type 2 diabetes.
The researchers adjusted for the participants’ age, weight, physical activity level, smoking, family history of diabetes and other dietary and lifestyle factors. Their findings are published today online in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition:
•A 2-ounce serving a day of processed meat (hot dog, bacon, salami or bologna) increased the risk of diabetes by 50%.
•A 4-ounce serving a day (the size of a deck of cards) of unprocessed red meat such as hamburger, steak, pork or lamb was associated with a 20% increased risk of diabetes.
•Substituting nuts, whole grains and low-fat dairy such as yogurt for a serving a day of these types of processed or unprocessed meats lowers the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 16% to 35%, the analysis showed.
“Many previous studies have shown the link between processed meats and diabetes, but this is one of the first (large studies) to show that unprocessed red meat is a significant risk factor,” says senior author Frank Hu, a professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health.
“Clearly, processed meat is much worse than unprocessed meat for raising the risk but unprocessed red meat is not benign,” he says. “This is the largest and most convincing data accumulated so far.”
Hu says the high amount of sodium and nitrites in processed meats are potential factors that increase diabetes risk.
With red meat, it may be the high amount of heme iron, he says. Although iron helps prevent anemia, many people in the Western world have iron overload, which is a risk factor for diabetes, he says. “There are probably other factors in these meats that contribute to diabetes.”
He advises reducing the consumption of these types of meats and incorporating more nuts and low-fat dairy and whole grains into meals.
Previous research has linked eating red meat and processed meat to an increased risk of heart disease and cancer, particularly colorectal cancer.
Registered dietitian Shalene McNeill, a spokeswoman for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, says, “These are epidemiological studies, and they can’t identify cause and effect. They are identifying associations, and what we know from gold-standard research that does look at cause and effect is that higher protein diets that include beef are very effective for helping people manage their weight and balance their blood sugars — both important factors for reducing your risk of developing diabetes.”
Diabetes afflicts more than 25 million adults and children in the USA. Most have type 2 diabetes. The long-term complications of the disease include heart attacks, blindness, kidney failure, nerve damage and amputations.
“Type 2 diabetes has a very strong genetic component, and multiple environmental factors, such as obesity, physical inactivity and poor diet, interact with genetics to increase the risk and accelerate the development of the disease,” says Vivian Fonseca, president-elect of medicine and science for the American Diabetes Association and a professor of medicine at Tulane.
“People who are eating a lot of red meat and processed meat may not be eating as much nuts, beans and fish which may be protective. People who eat more of those foods tend to have less diabetes,” Fonseca says.

MLB Bans Nutritional Supplement

As you know, I am a huge fan of the product, Royal Velvet, which is made from deer antler velvet. It’s an all-natural product. No deer are hurt or harmed. It comes from the fuzzy, little velvet at the very tips of the antlers. It is allegedly one of the greatest anti-aging products ever. It increases your IGF-1 levels and human growth hormone in the body. I’ve tested all my IGF-1 levels for years. I have a thick book with all these graphs, going back 20 years. As you age, your IGF-1, which is insulin growth factor, and your human growth hormone production decreases. By taking this product, it increases your IGF-1 levels and human growth hormone, to where it was when you were young and vibrant.
It is definitely a product that “they” don’t want you to know about and this week it has made the headlines…

MLB Warns Players of Deer Antler Spray
August 9, 2011
ESPN News
MLB players have been issued a warning over the use of deer-antler spray, a substance administered under the tongue that includes a banned chemical known for its muscle-building and fat-cutting effects, SI.com has reported.
Players had felt free to use the spray at nearly no risk until the warning was sent last week by the league, the report said.
In its warning, issued in reaction to reports from the drug-testing industry, MLB requested players not use the spray because it contained “potentially contaminated nutritional supplements” and had been added to the league’s cautionary list of products.
The warning was not issued because the spray includes the banned chemical, SI.com reported.
IGF-1, or insulin-like growth factor, can’t be detected in the urine tests used by baseball, and the players’ association has not come to an agreement with MLB on blood testing.

Local Ice Cream Makers Face Shutdown By State
August 8, 2011 by Brandy

Chicago Tribune
By Monica Eng & Christopher Borrelli
A few years ago, Kris Swanberg, having been laid off from her job as a Chicago Public Schools teacher, remembered she had gotten an ice cream maker as a wedding gift. The Chicago mom fished it out of her kitchen cabinet and eventually started a new career.
Today Swanberg’s Nice Cream — on offer at local Whole Foods and farmers markets — is considered a star of Chicago’s rich and beloved artisanal ice cream scene, one that could be shut down entirely by state rules, she recently learned.
She said that a couple of weeks ago, a representative from the Illinois Department of Public Health came to Logan Square Kitchen and informed her she’d have to shut down if she did not get something called “a dairy license.”
Swanberg and others in her field had operated for years now without ever hearing of such a thing and, indeed, they said, the city’s Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection, to which they applied for business licenses, never informed them they would need one to operate.
