My Viewpoint On Protein Shakes

Someone called into my daily radio program the other day and asked me for my opinion on protein shakes. Let me give you my opinion on protein shakes, superfood smoothies, and anything else that you make in a blender or a Vitamix type of thing…
There are health nuts out there, and I say that affectionately of course. Many of these people are a little fanatical and they believe that if you want to be healthy, you have to have at least a blender, but ideally a Vitamix.
They believe that you should take an apple and throw it into the blender. Then take some kale, cucumber, and maybe some superfoods, like spirulina powder, whey protein, or ginseng root, and you put those ingredients into a Vitamix and turn that sucker on and it goes crazy and liquefies everything into a drinkable beverage. Some health advocates believe that this is the best way to get the nutrients your body needs. I do not believe that. Don’t get me wrong; that drink will be loaded with vitamins, minerals, protein, and living enzymes, but I don’t think it’s helping your body get any healthier. I think it is actually hurting your body.

Hi everyone,
I’ve just read through the messages and I’d like to give my viewpoint. There are many things about our lives that are not as nature intended. She didn’t intend the GMO foods that fill 80+% of our grocery shelves… she didn’t intend the billions of pounds of pesticides and chemicals that are put in our ground, our water and our air. She intended that foods and herbs be our medicines and not pharmacuticals.
With all due respect, from what I’ve read of Kevin’s opinions and recommendations, he speaks as a healthy person would speak and as a person who has consulted with ‘experts’ who themselves (for the most part) are healthy. For a healthy person, I totally agree that whole foods and whole food supplements are the way to go. But I also believe in bio-individuality. When a person is not in a vibrant state of health, their needs are different than someone already at that state. There is not a ‘one-size-fits-all solution to recovering one’s health.
And I know, I’ve been there. I nearly died of a massive, undiscovered pesticide poisoning years ago. I was told by a doctor that the last system to shut down before the body dies is the digestive system. Mine was shutting down. I was told I had 2 weeks to live.
The doctors didn’t know what was killing me at the time and they couldn’t help me. I knew that if I wanted to live, I would have to heal myself… and so I had to turn away from them and I started on a multi-year journey of research and personal experimentation in order to recover my health. There was no cell in my body that was left undamaged- I had nerve damage, liver damage, kidney damage, brain damage, I was going bald, I was going blind, and I could barely walk. I had chronic fatigue syndrome, Premature ventricular contractions (heart problems), and other symptoms that have disease labels- here was not one system in my body that was functioning as nature intended.
Looking back at my journey back to health, I found that there were several stages that my body went through in its healing process. Along with detoxing the pesticides (once I knew what had poisoned me) I found that it first needed massive amounts of vitamins and massive amounts of proteins because it could no longer digest healthy foods fully and it couldn’t absorb the nutrients in those foods. I had become ‘allergic’ to over ‘healthy’ 200 foods and nutrients. My body could not deal with them.
Over time, as my body became less toxic and as it slowly began to regain an ability to digest the foods I was eating, I found that I could now move away from straight vitamins and minerals and toward whole food supplements… (but there were a lot of stages in between too). I also found that there was a time when I needed to juice (with a protein powder in it) nearly every day because that was the only way my body could absorb the nutrients it so badly needed in order to rebuild itself. After a time that started becoming less and less necessary… then I moved to the smoothies with the fiber left in them, and then the next stage was where I could now have the primary food be whole, un-juiced, un-smashed up foods.
In Level 1 GIN training and the YWIYC tapes Kevin teaches us that it’s about gradients when we are creating our desires. We’ll it’s the same with our health. The body requires different ‘help’ at different stages of healing and at different levels of toxicity. There is no silver bullet and one size does not fit all. In my view, we are all different. We have different drug histories, different exposures, we eat differently from one another, our bodies have different needs now with the damages done over a lifetime of being poisoned, and we all have different levels of nutritional deficiencies. Each person needs to figure out first the condition their body is in and then determine what is best for it to move forward toward better health from where it is now.
The key is knowing the state you want to reach. Then knowing your body’s needs… taking away those things that are hurting it, and giving it those things that will help it move to the next higher level of health and the next higher vibration.
So with all due respect, who do you listen to if you need to get to that state of vibrant health? Someone who has been at that level all their lives, or someone who has been at all the lower levels of health, nearest to death and then back to health- someone who learned how to re-build a body and did it? Who is your authority? Who gives you your answers for the body? In my opinion, with a roadmap, each individual should gradually become their own health authority, consulting with their own knowingness as it grows over time. All you need is a coach who has been there and done it to help guide you to your health goals and help you get more in tune with your body so you can understand the signals it gives you when it’s trying to tell you what it needs or what’s hurting it.
Kevin and all these Drs that are on this site are amazing resources for what’s out there at our disposal, and they do have the greatest of intentions, but even they should never be the authority telling you what should be true for you. I know how to rebuild a body and I did it, yet I won’t even take that responsibility. For that is your responsibility. To learn and to experiment with your body and to listen to it because it will tell you what it needs when.
I have found it very interesting that even in the natural healing arena, like the medical industry, there are vested interests. I have come across natural health practitioners who believe that their modality or supplement or whatever, is the only way. It’s not as simple as that. We as the consumer, as the boss over our bodies, employ the Naturopaths or other natural health practitioners… we should no give the responsibility for our health over to them or anyone, including a guru. Even David Wolfe is not perfect. I remember a talk he was giving in NYC where he was touting the benefits of this miracle food supplement. He explained how a man had gone to the Dr. and had some blood tests that showed his thyroid was having problems. David had this guy start taking Maca and David told everyone in the audience that after a short while this guy felt amazing, and how after further blood tests the blood tests showed that the numbers hadn’t changed! I raised my hand and clarified through a question, that the Maca didn’t heal the imbalance in the man’s body but that it was making him feel better without actually helping the body correct the imbalance. David was not very happy with me! But no one has the answers for everyone.
Every one of us needs to find our own answers. yes, the ideal scene is to reach that level where we all can get all the nutrition our bodies need from the food we eat, but the majority of us are not there yet. And until we get there, we need to discover our own path. So if you believe the body is benefitting from your protein drink every day, maybe it is. Maybe it’s not. But there’s a really simple way to find out. ASK the body! Ask the body what it wants!
And how do we do that? Simple… find a practitioner where you live that does muscle response testing, and have them actually do a muscle test while you’re holding that protein drink, or smoothie or supplement (actually, later, as you gain experience, you don’t even have to hold it- you can just think of it). Let your body have the final say about what it needs and wants from you and when. Not Kevin or any other health guru or Dr.
I like Terra’s num num omlette breakfast. I have not have much time at morning so my evry day breakfast is one of leading nutrition companys protein shakes. formula 1,2&3. And I really don’t have the time to make a simple shake then I will have a formula 1(dounut) and formula 2&3 at work from vending machine. Ha ha ha. Oops! I should’t tell you this. I know I’m bad…
Kevin you are always talking about organic food, according to organic labeling law if food manufacturers cannot find sufficient quantity of organic ingredients they can use what ever ingredients want to and sell it as organic.
We have certified organic farmers that come to our farmers market they are proud of there produce that is grown without any synthetic pesticides it is kind of funny listening to these farmers complain about how they spend so much money on pesticides its hard to make any money.
At our market we have lots of farmers growing fresh produce without the use of any pesticides or herbicides and fertilizing with compost but if they call there produce organic they could be stuck with a 11,000.00 dollar fine. The organic industry is just as corrupt as the other food industries we need a new label for our food that is fit for human consumption.
I exercise and lift weights on a regular basis, and am ALWAYS open to new ideas on additional ways to supercharge the muscular growth within an hour or so of a good lift, and keep my body fueled throughout the day. Sometimes it has to be quickly as I work 2 jobs and keep myself pretty busy. I’ll pick up some those ingredients and put em to the test! Thanks for all the great info and suggestions Mr. T! By the way, the weight room’s over there… (I’m flexing and pointing) Haha!
A comment before deadline only ^_^
The protein shake you talked about today sound like it
tastes delicious. Thanks for the clarity on the default
situation
Great thoughts Kevin on protein shakes, raw food, and super foods. It reminded me of the importance of chewing and mixing that saliva with food.
Thanks.
This makes a lot of sense. I think its particularly helpful because there are so many protein drink products out there. Most of which are far from healthy. What Kevin talked about today in terms of ingredients that are good to put into a blended drink, very informative.
mmmm breakfast…. my favourite right now is a 3-4 egg omlette with smoked salmon lox, crumbled feta cheese, garlic, fresh herbs and sea salt. The cheese melts and gets all gooey… num num num num

Hi Kevin.
I’ m loving your radio show,it’s the best and it was a long time coming.
I was thrilled when you gave your sugestion on the the protein shake…You see I have been doing that for a while.
My protein shake right after my workout allways consists of mainly a hemp protein shake into wich I add some other ingredients.
Sometimes I’ ll simplefy it and just do some Yogourt,or milk/Hemp/and Eggs(raw organic of course) or even just some eggs and hemp in water.I really feel this formula made at home is alot better(not to mention cheaper) than the ones they sell at the gym.Anyways I love hemp protein it’s a lot healthier.I ve gone so far as to put a little bit of it in my coffee. I m going to try your quick breakfast recipe, I love yogurt and I love seeds.
Well, thanks alot for your awesome advise, and suggestions ,and keep up your good work.
Ed.
Hey Kevin, Thanks for speaking so much about this one particular subject. It was a pleasure speaking to you.
I love your cd series, thanks for teaching me to care but not that much! Also to believe and there is always a positive side to everything even if my tires break down. you taught me a whole other side to life Kevin.
Hope to meet you someday.
Albert
Hi Kevin,
I really enjoyed listening to the show today and you just confirmed everything I believed about the media, hence the reason I no longer watch the news. It’s always depressing and exaggerating of the truth. About the protein shakes and smoothies, I actually used to do that daily twice a day and found myself gaining weight even though I exercised. I’m so greatful to my client that introduced me to your book the weight loss cure protocol, I’m on Phase 1 and feeling so good and all I did was switch my foods and fruit to organic, even my children can tell the difference in the way the food tastes. My 6yr. old never liked cauliflower when I cooked it but yesterday I steamed organic cauliflower for about 8 mins, so it was still mostly raw and my little man thought that it was so good he ate all of it, I got so excited and felt really good knowing that I don’t have to cook seperate dishes for the fear that my kids wouldn’t like the food, but I’m so glad they do. Your book is like my bible as I do the weight loss cure protocol. Thanks for finding this, it is changing my life for the better and I feel SO GOOD!
Well if the natural fruit smoothies/protein drinks are not good for you than neither are the vitamins that you sell. Neither are a whole food that nature produces to be eaten. I’m sure if you were selling protein drinks you wouldn’t have written the above article.
I see you like a new jack that dont understand were KT is coming from.US that been making the protien shakes for years we do understand KT.When it comes to health ,money ,happyness, listen to the man himself,KT & his gurus, dont get caught in the illusion.Listen to the wise & become wise, listen to the stupid and youll fair badly son. With one product that i got from KT that i paid about $70 dollars my 85 year old mother is now free from diabetes, calsification of her breast, high blood pressure &
colesterol and if you see me at 52 just took my phisical and the result are even better than last year and people think im 30,and thatone or two things of many other thins i can tell you my son.So get some understanding search for it like silvar and gold, because if Jesus Crist would come down to earth right now you would put him on the cross again.KT is a good man and if you are against the people doing good you could say you agaist the true God.KT becomes a better person as times go ,the same thing we should be doing.Kevin is doing big thins LOVE AND BLESSING
Thanks KT for the protein shake for individuals who exercise. I do strength training and I am going to purchase some hemp protein, raw milk, raw honey. Once again thank you KT
I also would like to thank you Kevin for the ingredients to the protein drink. What should the amounts of each ingredient be? Thanks!
My understanding of the topic is:
When we ate as nature intended we still would eat a lot of raw fruits and vegetables, as we did in earlier times, when we still had good teeth and jaw muscles.
When people introduced that behaviour and obviously created yummy food, chewing was not so much needed anymore. Nowadays people are not used to properly chew anymore at all (many even more or less only gorge their food).
Cooking food is not really what nature intended us to do
So when they now eat a lot of healthy raw food, they have on the one hand side problems to digest it (that is when they complain about salad giving them stomach ache). On the other hand side the good vitamins and minerals can’t be extracted so easily by the body, because of the high amount of plant fibre, which can’t be broken up correctly with less chewing. So for us ‘civilized’ people smoothies can be of help, because the food is mainly in the state of being spoonfed already
Very important is to not only swallow but chew the smoothie to simulate the process of beginning digestion in the mouth, and that is what many people don’t know!
How do we know nature did not intend us to not cook food? Maybe nature did intend us to cook food so thats why there is fire
Also having good teeth has nothing to do with eating only raw fruits and vegetables. In fact eating only fruits and vegetables can be harmful to your teeth in todays world. Weston A Price was the Napoleon Hill of the dentist world as he studied cultures with good teeth and bad teeth. And people with the best teeth were not vegetarians. Just like people that live the longest also arent majority vegetarians.
I understand what KT is saying, and definitely make sure to get adequate servings of organic fruits and veggies in my daily diet, as nature intended. However, I wish he would have addressed protein shakes in the form of a whey concentrate with various amino acids added, glutamine, etc., which is something I consume daily since I work out for at least an hour 5 days/week. I don’t substitute the shake for protein from whole food sources, I always eat organic, and feel that the immediate absorption of protein and amino acids into the bloodstream within 90 minutes of working out is essential for muscle building and repair. Would be awesome if he could comment on that, especially because not all protein blends are made alike nor are they all good for you (many contain high fructose corn syrup and other synthetic sugars for flavoring, as well as GM soy lecithin, among other things).
Hey Kevin,
Every time I hear you talk about this topic, I understand and agree with you completely. However, I have one question about supplements that we are supposed to take. Of course the vitamins and nutrition in supplements is not in the form that nature intended either because we are not consuming the foods they are found in. If anything, we are probably mixing nutrients that are not even found in the same food and taking them all at once. Wouldn’t this be the same as having a super nutritional fruit smoothie?
Love,
Dea
I had acquired one of those Jack Lalanne juicers about a year ago. I unpackaged it, fired it up, and proceeded to juice a few apples. What I wound up with astounded me. There was a moderate amount of juice in the glass. However, in the top of the machine was a considerable amount of leftover pulp! I always thought that pulp was supposed to be a good thing. Provides fiber, has additional nutrients including minerals and so on. After this experience I reverted to my old habits of eating the apples in there entirety and scuttled the juice machine. To me it seemed such a waste of good nutrients just so one can juice there food.
Hi Robert, I have that same juicer and it works really well. From what I understand only fiber is left in the pulp and the nutrients are in the juice. Since you remove the fiber from juicing it’s recommended that you also eat fruits and vegetables for fiber. Lets say you juice like 4 carrots, a cucumber, some broccoli and a few stalks of celery and you drink that juice, you just gave your body an insane energy boost and your body absorbs all those nutrients immediately without digesting! Just think how long it would take to eat those vegetables and then the body would have to break them down to digest them? Juicing is very beneficial to our health. Just my opinion.
Juicing is great but when you put everything in your system at once that is a lot of sugar! Celery juice is fine because it is low in sugar, but when you combine say…. celery, carrots, apples, spinach, romaine lettuce, kale, lemons, etc. the foods turn into sugar once you juice them. Kevin is right, it’s not like nature intended it to be. We didn’t have a juicer or a smoothie machine hundred of years ago.
It is Delicious to juice or to make a smoothie but I agree with Kevin, every day may not be the best choice.

I never heard of vegetables turning to sugar from juicing. Fruit of course, but vegetables? I follow David Wolfe, Yuri Elkaim & Dan McDonald and not once have I heard them say that sugar is formed from juicing vegetables. Eating fruit whole has sugar so should we not eat fruit? lol
