CHICAGO (Reuters) – Even Rod Blagojevich’s lawyer finds him a bit strange, which may provide the key to the former Illinois governor’s strategy at his upcoming corruption trial — he was all talk, but no action.
Among the 24 counts of fraud, conspiracy, bribery and racketeering that could land Blagojevich a long prison sentence are charges he dangled President Barack Obama’s vacant U.S. Senate seat to the highest bidder or demanded a cabinet post for himself in exchange for naming an Obama aide to the seat.
Since his arrest at dawn on December 9, 2008, Blagojevich has repeated his mantra of innocence in nonstop interviews, in a book, on the airwaves as a local disc jockey, and to anyone who would listen on NBC’s “Celebrity Apprentice” television show.
Married with two young daughters, the 53-year-old former two-term Democrat governor and, before that, three-term U.S. representative said he is trying to make a living since being impeached and ousted last year by the state legislature.
His attorney told an interviewer that he had neither the capability nor the intention of shutting Blagojevich up.
“He’s a celebrity idiot, but he is a celebrity,” Sam Adam Jr. told Chicago Magazine of plans to let his client testify.
Quieting Blagojevich would never work, he added.
“I can’t. But you’re going to see when he testifies. He’s truly funny — totally self-absorbed but truly funny,” Adams said. “He’s also one of the most insecure people I’ve ever met. It’s such a strange dynamic.”

GM Flax Contamination Now Detected in 35 Countries

Last September, the Flax Council of Canada (FCC) announced that an unapproved variety of genetically modified flax was detected in food products in Europe. The GM flax variety was identified as FP967 or “Triffid,” which had been developed in Canada, but was never commercialized and has been illegal to grow in Canada since 2001. Since the initial announcement last September, GM flax contamination has been reported in 35 countries.
The contamination has decimated Canada’s flax exports to Europe, which buys 70% of Canada’s flax exports worth an estimated $321 million (Canadian). The European Union has zero tolerance for unapproved GMOs.
More than six months later disturbing questions remain about the GM flax contamination:
How did the contamination happen?
No one knows for sure how a GM flax variety that had been removed from the market eight years earlier ended up contaminating food products in 35 countries. According to the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network, by 2001, 40 seed growers were multiplying 200,000 bushels of GM seed for future demand. One theory is that some flax growers continued to grow the variety even after the Canadian flax industry decided not to allow commercial production of GM flax.
According to an article in the Manitoba Co-operator, extensive sample testing from across Canada’s flax-growing regions found the Triffid contamination could not be isolated to one area. It was present in minute quantities throughout the system. Testing in March by Canada’s Crop Development Centre found low levels of Triffid in seed used by flax breeders.
Triffid’s developer Alan McHughen passed out packets of Triffid seed to farmers 10 years ago, but he says the packets contained only 30 seeds and were distributed with the provision that they wouldn’t be planted for commercial use. “It’s impossible for the current contamination to be caused by these packets,” McHughen says.

White House Prepares For Immigration Overhaul

With the healthcare battle still unfinished, the Obama administration has been laying plans to take up an issue that could prove even more divisive — a major overhaul of the nation’s immigration system.
Senior White House aides privately have assured Latino activists that the president will back legislation next year to provide a path to citizenship for the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants living in the United States.
In a recent conference call with proponents, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Jim Messina, political director Patrick Gaspard and others delivered the message that the White House was committed to seeing a substantial immigration bill pass and wanted to make sure allies were prepared for the fight.
In addition to the citizenship provision, the emerging plan will emphasize efforts to secure U.S. borders against those trying to cross illegally. But that two-track approach was rejected repeatedly in the past by Republicans and other critics who insist that a border crackdown must demonstrate its effectiveness before any action on citizenship is considered.
Whatever proposal Obama puts forward will probably meet equally determined opposition. Another complication is the calendar: Midterm elections are in November, and polls show that the public is more worried about joblessness and the fragile economy than anything else.
So embracing an immigration bill is a gamble for the White House, which already has a packed agenda for 2010: economic recovery, global warming legislation and tougher regulation of financial institutions.
