All Hype? Gluten-Free Diets May Not Help Many

TIME

Gluten-free products are all the rage these days, but many health-conscious eaters who buy them may be wasting their money, the authors of a new commentary in Annals of Internal Medicine suggest.
Going gluten-free is necessary for people with celiac disease, an autoimmune condition triggered by gluten, which is found in wheat, barley and rye. The disease causes inflammation in the small intestine and can lead to malnutrition.
Yet many others without celiac disease have also adopted gluten-free lifestyles — no doubt inspired in part by athletes and celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and Victoria Beckham — in hopes of losing weight, boosting energy and resolving any number of potentially gluten-related symptoms like diarrhea, bloating, gas, headache, ADHD and mouth sores.
Many such adopters have been diagnosed by their doctors with “nonceliac gluten sensitivity,” a condition that by some estimates affects as many as 18 million Americans. But the authors of the commentary, celiac researchers Dr. Antonio Di Sabatino and Dr. Gino Roberto Corazza of Italy’s University of Pavia, question that figure, noting that there’s no official data on the prevalence of nonceliac gluten sensitivity, nor is there any consensus among doctors about how to diagnose it. Unlike with celiac disease, which can be identified through blood tests and bowel biopsies, there’s no good test to determine gluten sensitivity.
What there is, however, is a lot of hype surrounding the supposed benefits of gluten-free eating. Such claims “seem to increase daily, with no adequate scientific support to back them up,” the authors write. “This clamor has increased and moved from the Internet to the popular press, where gluten has become ‘the new diet villain.’”
It’s possible that people who have bad reactions to common gluten-containing foods — pasta, breads, baked goods and breakfast cereal — may actually be sensitive to something else in wheat flour or to other ingredients in the foods, the authors suggest. It’s also possible that some people develop gastrointestinal or other symptoms simply because they believe they’re food-sensitive.
That’s not to say that nonceliac gluten sensitivity doesn’t exist. But the authors say that more clinical research is needed to help define it and to prevent a “gluten preoccupation from evolving into the conviction that gluten is toxic for most of the population.”
In the meantime, until researchers figure out the best way to diagnose gluten sensitivity, the authors discourage people from cutting out gluten entirely, which could lead to a diet that’s lacking in fiber — and put serious dent in your wallet — and suggest that doctors use an “oral challenge,” a test in which a patient drinks a gluten beverage to see if symptoms arise, to help identify likely cases of sensitivity.

Get Rid Of Peanut Allergies Once And For All!

New research has come out. It says, ‘low allergy’ peanut good news for people who can’t eat peanuts due to an allergy! Researchers at the US Department of Agriculture are currently trying to breed a peanut that doesn’t contain two proteins, which they believe cause allergies.
First off, peanut allergies did not exist 50 years ago. Think about that. Peanut allergies exist today and are only in America. Why is it that only in America do children have so many allergies to peanuts? Why is it so prevalent now even though it didn’t exist 50 years ago and doesn’t exist around the world?
Could it be in the way we manufacture and produce peanuts? Could it be in the chemical fertilization used or the herbal pesticides or the various fungicides used in the production of peanuts? Of course it is! Could it be the radiation? Could it be the chemicals that the peanuts are soaked in and not the peanut itself? Could it be the fact that today’s peanuts have already been genetically modified in America and therefore they are in a form that nature didn’t intend?! Yes! Yes! YES!
So, what can you do? What’s the solution?

Leading Experts Rethinking Food Allergy Causes

The perplexing world of childhood food allergies is enough to make any parent break out in hives.
But conventional wisdom is now being questioned when it comes to bottle-feeding whole milk to babies or keeping toddlers away from the peanut butter jar.
With an alarming increase in childhood food allergies and record numbers of parents heading to the doctor’s office with concerns that their children are allergic to a long list of foods, a team of leading childhood allergy experts says the way we prevent food allergies is misconceived, The New Yorker reports.
Dr. Hugh Sampson, director of the Jae Food Allergy Institute at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, tells the magazine new research is producing some unexpected findings, mostly that, contrary to popular belief, early exposure to allergies may prevent food allergies later on.
Though he believed for most of his career that children are far less likely to become allergic to problematic foods if they are not exposed to them as infants, Sampson tells The New Yorker research is proving him wrong.
Sampson and Dr. Scott Sicherer, a pediatric allergist also at Mount Sinai, have conducted extensive studies throughout the United States that show that the rate of allergies is rising sharply.
They estimate that 3 to 5 percent of the population is allergic to milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts or seafood, according to the magazine.
“This increase in the incidence of food allergy is real,” Sampson tells The New Yorker, but he adds that he can’t say what is causing the increase, just that he now thinks the conventional approach to preventing food allergies is questionable.
In fact, the Mount Sinai team tells The New Yorker they believe early exposure may actually help prevent food allergies later in life.
Previously, Sampson says, his research in the 1980s looked at whether the problem of allergies could be prevented if mothers continued breast-feeding as long as possible. Laboratory studies reinforced the theory, he tells the magazine.
“From an evolutionary-biology point of view, food allergy makes no sense at all,” co-researcher Sicherer tells The New Yorker. “It seems pretty clear that food allergy is a condition that resulted from the environment we created.”
Now, experts believe, a child becomes tolerant to a variety of food proteins through exposure in the first six months of life and some 80 percent of infants who are allergic to eggs or milk will outgrow the allergy by their teenage years.

The ‘Low-Allergy’ Peanut Which Could Revolutionize Life For Millions
February 11, 2011 by admin

Daily Mail
A low-allergy peanut which could transform the eating habits of those who have to avoid them is being developed.
U.S. researchers are creating naturally grown peanuts with two major proteins that cause allergy bred out of them.
If experiments succeed, the nuts could be sold in shops and used by food manufacturers to cut the risks associated through the contamination of other foods on production lines.
Restaurants may also use the nuts to reduce problems for allergic customers.
In the past 20 years the number of British children with peanut allergy has nearly doubled, with one in 55 being diagnosed with it.
Professor Soheila Maleki, whose team at the U.S. Department of Agriculture is working on the project, said the nuts were the first which did not involve genetic modification.
An anti-allergy vaccine based on the same principle could also be created, although she stressed further research was needed.
Prof Maleki’s team have been breeding peanuts that are missing two major allergens (proteins that cause allergy).
The experts have also identified peanuts which are missing a third major allergen, leading to the possibility of adding these into the mix.
One benefit of a low-allergy peanut is that people could consume them in childhood and would therefore be less likely to become allergic to peanuts in the first place.
‘And people that are already allergic would need to have a much higher dose before they suffered a reaction,’ Prof Maleki said.
‘In the case of accidental ingestion, there would be much less of a reaction.’

Vaccinations and Allergy Shots Causing Allergies to Aluminum
January 11, 2011 by admin

Natural News
By: S.L. Baker
An allergic reaction to aluminum used to be extraordinarily rare. That’s not true any more, however, and researchers have been baffled for an explanation. Now it appears one has been found. It turns out that as the number of vaccinations people are given has increased, so has the incidence of the formerly almost non-existent aluminum allergy.
The connection? Swedish researchers think the aluminum added to many vaccinations as an “intensifier” has caused an increasing number of people to become allergic to the metal. And, with aluminum in everything from medications and deodorant to make-up and more, it’s not an easy allergen to avoid.
The first inkling of the aluminum allergy/vaccination connection was revealed a few years ago when a study of whooping cough vaccinations in Gothenburg showed that about one percent of youngsters who received these vaccinations developed pruritic nodules (small lumps under the skin that itch and can last for years) in the area of the shot. And 75 percent of these kids with the nodules also became allergic to aluminum.
“This was completely unexpected. Aluminum has been used as an adjuvant, intensifier, in vaccines for over 70 years with only a small number of reports of pruritic nodules and allergic contact dermatitis,” scientist Eva Netterlid said in a statement to the media. She is conducting research on the vaccination/allergy connection at the Occupational and Environmental Dermatology Unit in Malmo, Sweden.
So what has changed that’s caused aluminum allergies to become far more common? Netterlid thinks it’s because the types of aluminum compounds used in vaccines and other mainstream medical treatments such as allergy desensitization shots have been changed over the years. In addition, people are receiving more vaccinations than ever, in part because of the increase in international travel.
