Is arsenic in your breakfast? A new study suggests that might just be what you – or your children – are having each morning.
Researchers at Dartmouth College already knew that rice can be a major source of inorganic arsenic. This includes rice products, such as organic brown rice syrup, an alternative sweetener to high fructose corn syrup. Exposure to high levels of inorganic arsenic over time has been tied to increased risk for cancer.
For the study – published in the Feb. 16 issue of Environmental Health Perspectives – the researchers investigated levels of arsenic in commercially available brown rice syrups, and in products containing the syrups, including infant formula, cereal and energy bars, and high energy foods used by endurance athletes.
What did they find? Surprising levels of arsenic in these products containing organic brown rice syrup.
Out of 17 infant formulas tested, 15 did not contain organic brown rice syrups – and had relatively low levels of arsenic. As for the two formulas that listed organic brown rice syrup as the primary ingredient – those contained 20 times as much arsenic as ones without the rice ingredient. One had a total arsenic concentration that was six times the federal limit of 10 parts per billion (ppb) for total arsenic in bottled or public drinking water.

With the growing awareness that toxic artificial sweeteners like aspartame are seriously compromising the health of the population, more and more companies are transitioning to more natural, healthy sweeteners. The transition is undoubtedly a positive one, but research has shown that the process of using other sweeteners sometimes leads to higher levels of other toxic compounds.
Research has recently found that organic brown rice syrup, the sweetener many companies are switching to, has significant concentrations of a heavy metal known as arsenic. In some instances, arsenic was found at levels 6 times higher than the Environmental Protection Agency’s ‘safe limit’ of arsenic in drinking water.
The findings came after arsenic content was analyzed in a range of products made with and without brown rice syrup. An analysis of three different brown rice syrups found that total arsenic concentrations ranged from 80 to 400 nanograms per gram. Researchers found that the proportion of organic arsenic was between 80 and 90 percent of the total arsenic level for 2 of the 3 syrups, while the 3rd syrup was made up of 50 percent.
Brian Jackson and his colleagues also tested 17 baby formulas – 15 of which dd not contain organic brown rice syrup. Baby formulas containing the sweetener ended up having 20 times higher arsenic concentrations than the formula without the sweetener.

Out of 29 cereal or energy bars tested, 22 contained at least one rice product in the top five ingredients. The seven that didn’t had the lowest levels of arsenic, while those that did contained levels of arsenic ranging from 23 to 128 ppb. The energy shots contained between 84 and 171 ppb arsenic.
Study author Dr. Brian Jackson, an environmental chemistry researcher at Dartmouth’s Superfund Research Program, told Consumer Reports, ” I would certainly advise parents who are concerned about their children’s exposure to arsenic not to feed them formula where brown rice syrup is the main ingredient.”
There are currently no U.S. regulations for arsenic in food. But the new study shows some food products bring significant amounts of arsenic to an individual’s diet, so researchers conclude “there is an urgent need for regulatory limits on [arsenic] in food.”
This study isn’t the first to put arsenic in the spotlight. Levels of arsenic have previously been found in apple and grape juice.

Next time you pick up an organic cereal bar or buy infant formula, you might want to read the label closely. High levels of arsenic, a chemical linked to cancer, chronic diseases and developmental effects, have been found in foods that list organic brown rice syrup as a primary ingredient, according to a new study from Dartmouth University.
Organic brown rice syrup is often used as a substitute for high fructose corn syrup in prepared organic foods. One of the infant formulas tested contained twice the inorganic arsenic allowed in drinking water, according to Environmental Protection Agency standards. One cereal bar contained 12 times the legal limit for drinking water of 10 parts per billion (ppb). High-energy foods tested had 8 to 17 times the limit.
The researchers tested 17 infant formulas, 29 cereal bars and three types of energy shot drinks. Two infant formulas –- one dairy based and the other soy based – listed organic brown rice syrup as their primary ingredient. They both contained arsenic levels 20 times higher than the other formulas made without organic brown rice syrup.

Cadmium Exposure Could Be Damaging Children’s Health More Than Lead

Recent research shows that cadmium could very well be more dangerous to children’s health than lead.
While heavy metals such as arsenic, lead, and mercury are often the first to pop up when discussing or thinking about heavy metals and human health, cadmium remains the lesser mentioned metal compromising the health of many — especially children.
Current and future research will likely continue to make the dangers of cadmium more well known.
Is Cadmium More Dangerous for Children than Lead?
The study, led by Harvard University researchers, found that children with higher cadmium levels are three times as likely to have learning disabilities than those with lower levels. Study’s senior author Dr. Robert Wright explains:
One of the important points of the study is that we didn’t study a population of kids who had very high exposures. We studied a population representative of the U.S. That we found any [effect] suggests this is occurring at relatively low levels…It does certainly point to the fact that we need more attention paid to the neurotoxic effects of cadmium in children
A total of 2,199 children between the ages 6 and 15 were included in the study, with 12.6 percent of them having a learning disability and 10.5 percent being enrolled in special education classes. Those with the highest cadmium levels were 3.21 times more likely to have a learning disability than children less exposed.
Although cadmium is naturally found in much of the soil across the United States, the heavy metal is also released by battery manufacturers, smelters, electroplating plants, and other industries. Cadmium is also present in inexpensive jewelry for kids.

EPA Providing Drinking Water To Fracking Victims Years Later

In yet another case of drinking water contamination in areas where energy companies have engaged in the controversial practice of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is supplying clean water to some residents of Dimock Township, Pennsylvania (pop.: 1,398), at taxpayer expense.
Apparently concerned that the contamination may be more widespread, EPA will soon begin more extensive testing of the local water supply. In fracking, energy companies use powerful pumps to force pressurized fluid into deep layers of rock, causing fractures, which allow the extraction of otherwise unavailable natural gas or oil. In the case of Dimock, Cabot Oil and Gas began fracking operations in the area in 2006, and by January 2009, some locals were reporting methane bubbling out of their faucets and tap water actually catching fire, meaning that natural gas had contaminated the water. Although the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection fined Cabot $120,000 for numerous violations and Cabot supplied drinkable water to local residents for a few months, the water has since become even more contaminated, not only with methane but also with dangerous levels of cancer-causing arsenic, as well as glycols and barium in at least four wells.
