Why Drinking Alcohol Makes You Fat

“If you want to lose weight, you really need to lay off the booze. A glass of wine here or there isn’t going to hurt, but drinking every single night has got to stop. Your liver will thank you too.” –KTRN

There are many factors that affect weight loss, making the process more complicated than it may seem. The body produces different hormones in response to different types of foods and/or drinks. Losing weight is not only about calorie consumption but also about the types of foods and drinks consumed. Alcohol is one of the worst culprits when it comes to inhibiting weight loss because it disrupts the delicate balance of nutrition, fluid and hormones needed to lose fat.

Alcohol boosts cortisol, a fat-creating hormone

Drinking heavily or even occasionally increases the body’s release of cortisol – the hormone that breaks down muscle and retains fat. This loss of muscle can mean a huge slowdown in one’s metabolism, making it easier to gain weight. In addition, alcohol causes a drop in testosterone in men, a hormone which helps burn fat.

Alcohol also blocks the body from burning fat. Research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported that fat metabolism can be reduced by as much as 73 percent after only two drinks of vodka and lemonade in a one-hour time period. In effect, alcohol shuts down the body’s ability to access fat stores for energy. The body needs to be well-hydrated in order to build muscle and burn fat. Alcohol has the effect of dehydrating the body.

Drinking often accompanies irresponsible eating

Because drinking often puts one in a relaxed party mood, it is easier to indulge in snacks, potato chips and other unhealthy party foods — the more one drinks the less one seems to care.

Alcohol is a powerful appetizer. An aperitif is often offered in restaurants to stimulate the appetite. Research has shown that there is a definite correlation between the amount of alcohol consumed before a meal and the amount of food eaten and that people eat more when they have beer or wine with their meal. Since alcohol causes the brain to release dopamine, the pleasure and addiction hormone, the result is an often addictive desire for more alcohol and food. This means one is hit with a double whammy when it comes to gaining weight: excess calories come from both the alcohol and the extra food that is usually consumed as a result of a stimulated appetite.

Challenge Studies That Encourage Moderate Alcohol Consumption For Health And Longevity

“Don’t go hitting the bar just yet, as these studies leave alot to be desired. But honestly, anything in moderation is cool. You could probably smoke one organic cigarette a day and not have any health issues at all – it’s smoking a pack of chemical laced mainstream cigarettes that will kill you. The same could even be said for alcohol.  Life is tough – it’s cool to unwind now and again. But you can’t overdo it. Moderation – with anything in life – is key.” –KTRN

Alcohol consumption’s health consequences have been a subject of epidemiological studies throughout the western world. The consensus from several studies is: Those who drink moderately have better health than those who drink heavily, and surprise, even better than those who don’t drink alcohol at all. It leaves one wondering how thorough these studies were.

It doesn’t have to be wine that’s consumed, they say. It could be any type of alcoholic beverage. But it appears that all the tests don’t agree with what’s moderate. Some say one or two drinks per week, and others say three to four drinks a day. Maybe it depends on who drinks what.

While it’s true that using alcohol moderately to relax may help protect one from a health debilitating stress overload, that seems to fall short for the finding that moderate drinking is healthier than no alcohol at all. Does this include those of us who eat right, exercise, and meditate?

One area of suspicion is just what are the teetotalers eating and what is their level of physical activity? That seems to be a non-factor with these studies. There are several individuals from “primitive” cultures, who live healthy lives to 100 years of age, and yogis, who continue to practice Hatha Yoga at or near that age.

Most of them don’t drink alcohol at all, and they’ve lived relatively healthy long lives. So we don’t really know the lifestyles of those in the studies who say they don’t drink alcohol at all. That could flip these studies over.

As we know, mainstream medicine doesn’t consider shunning processed foods and meats in its factoring for good health and longevity. So how many teetotalers were consuming whole organic foods? And how many were vegetarians? This writer’s hunch is very few were observing healthy diets or lifestyles.

Westerners ‘Programmed to Eat Junk Food’

Scientists at Aberdeen University have discovered that those of European origin are more likely to have genes which urge them to gorge on fatty foods, beer and wine, than Asians.

Dr Alasdair MacKenzie explained that the genes controlled the strength of a “switch” that helped determine appetite.

He said: “The switch controls the areas of the brain which allows us to select which foods we would like to eat and if it is turned on too strongly we are more likely to crave fatty foods and alcohol.”

He went on: “The fact that the weaker switch is found more frequently in Asians compared to Europeans suggests they are less inclined to select such options.”

Dr MacKenzie believed the fact that Europeans in the past had to survive through long cold winter by relying on brewed drinks and fat-rich foods, meant they became genetically predisposed through natural selection to like them.

He said: “These results give us a glimpse into early European life where brewing and dairy produce were important sources of calories during the winter months.

“Thus, a preference for food with a higher fat and alcohol content would have been important for survival.

“The negative effects of fat and alcohol we see today would not have mattered so much then as life expectancies were between 30 to 40 years.”

However, Dr MacKenzie said that those of Asian origin who moved to Western countries were not immune from obesity or heavy drinking habits, and that physiology was only a small part of the picture.

Galanin is a brain chemical called a neuropeptide, which previous research has identified as crucial to determining appetite for carbohydrate and fat-rich food.

Risk Of Stroke Doubles In First Hour After 1 Drink

Long day at work? Stressed about paying your bills? How tempting, at such times, to reach for a drink….

If that sounds like you, here’s some sobering news from a study published online in Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Assn.: The risk of stroke appears to double in the hour after consuming alcohol.

After interviewing 390 ischemic stroke patients about their drinking patterns within three days after their stroke, researchers concluded that the risk of ischemic stroke is 2.3 times higher in the hour after alcohol is consumed than it is during periods of no alcohol consumption. (An ischemic stroke — the most common type — is one where blood supply to the brain is cut off because of a blood clot.)

The risk was the same regardless of type of alcohol — wine, beer or distilled spirits. And the increased risk was seen even with a single drink.

However, the study also found that the higher risk is short-lived, said Elizabeth Mostofsky, lead author of the study and a doctoral candidate at the Harvard School of Public Health.

Even though the risk of stroke was highest in the hour after drinking, it was lowered when alcohol had been consumed earlier than that. Among those who drank, the chance of a stroke was 30% lower when moderate amounts of alcohol had been consumed more than 24 hours earlier, compared with no alcohol intake at all. (“Moderate” is defined as no more than one drink a day for a woman and two for a man.)

Moderate drinkers may breathe easier, but they would do well to think about where they do their drinking. A recent survey by research firm Mintel found that among alcohol drinkers, a significantly greater number of people drink at home than they do in public venues. And when people do drink at home, they consume almost twice the number of drinks in an average month than they do in restaurants or bars (10 versus 5.7).

Natural News

By David Gutierrez

(NaturalNews) Women who eat a typical Western diet high in junk food may increase their risk of suffering from mood disorders such as depression, according to a study conducted by researchers from the University of Melbourne and published in the American Journal of Psychiatry.

Researchers gathered psychiatric evaluations of 925 women between the ages of 20 to 93 over the course of ten years, then compared them to data collected on the participants’ diets. They found that women who ate a diet high in white bread, hamburgers, pizza, chips, beer, flavored dairy beverages and sugary foods were 50 percent more likely to suffer from depression or anxiety than women who did not eat such a diet.

In contrast, women who ate what the researchers classified as a traditional Australian diet, high in vegetables, fruit, beef, lamb, fish and whole grains, were 30 percent less likely to suffer from mood disorders than women who did not follow the Australian diet.

Drinking Beer May Strengthen Weak Bones

February 12, 2010 by admin

Guardian

By Press Association

Beer is a rich source of a nutrient that can help prevent weak bones – but it depends what type you drink, claim researchers at University of California, Davis, today.

As one of the nation’s favourite tipples, beer is a rich source of dietary silicon, which can help cut the chance of developing diseases like osteoporosis, they conclude.

However, not all beers are the same, with those containing malted barley and hops having higher silicon content than beers made from wheat.

Some light lagers made from grains like corn have the lowest levels of silicon while beers made from hops seem to come out on top, according to the study. The research, published in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, examined 100 commercial beers and their production methods.

The experts said beer was a major source of dietary silicon – roughly half of the silicon in beer can be readily absorbed by the body.

Charles Bamforth, lead author of the study, said: “Beers containing high levels of malted barley and hops are richest in silicon.

“Wheat contains less silicon than barley because it is the husk of the barley that is rich in this element.

“While most of the silicon remains in the husk during brewing, significant quantities of silicon nonetheless are extracted into wort and much of this survives into beer.”

Dr Claire Bowring, from the National Osteoporosis Society, said: “These findings mirror results from previous studies which concluded that moderate alcohol consumption could be beneficial to bones.

“However, while the National Osteoporosis Society welcomes measures to improve bone health we do not recommend anyone increases their alcohol consumption on the basis of these studies.

“While low quantities of alcohol may appear to have bone density benefits, higher intakes have been show to decrease bone strength, with an alcohol intake of more than two units per day actually increasing the risk of breaking a bone.

“There are also many other health concerns linked with alcohol which cannot be ignored.”

Catherine Collins, a dietician at St George’s Healthcare NHS Trust in London, said there was no recommended daily amount of silicon people should be consuming.

She said it was hard to prove deficiency in silicon because so little was needed.

“Sources of silicon do include beer – either alcohol-containing or alcohol-free – and it’s also added as an anti-caking agent to powders such as baking powder.

“It is found in different amounts in water, so contributes to beer’s total silica content.

“Silica may well contribute to bone health but in a minor way.

“It is not really significant compared with nutrients that we know are essential for bone health and are potentially deficient in the UK diet – such as calcium and vitamin D.”
