War Criminals Bush and Cheney Can No Longer Travel Outside the U.S.

“The world hates George Bush and Dick Cheney so much that they can’t even travel outside of the US. Why are they not in jail?” –KTRN
Everyone in the world seems to recognize the obvious crimes perpetrated by the Bush/Cheney regime. Their overwhelming negative status in the world has now confined them to personal prisons where they can no longer travel abroad for public events. It appears they’re only welcome in heavily-secured private dragon lairs for the rest of their waking years. But even those locations are shrinking for these torturers and mass murderers.
Cheney, scheduled to speak in Toronto with his daughter next month, had to cancel the speaking appearance due to “security concerns stemming from their experiences in Vancouver in September 2011,” according to a press release about the event.
The September event referred to in the press release was hardly a public event at all. It cost $500 a ticket to attend and took place at the Vancouver Club which the Canadian Press called “one of Vancouver’s most exclusive clubs.” Still, the public caught wind of the event and staged a rambunctious protest calling for Cheney’s arrest. The angry crowd caused Cheney to be locked in the club for seven hours longer than he was scheduled.
In February of last year, George W. Bush had to cancel a speaking engagement in Switzerland because human rights groups put pressure on the Swiss government to arrest him over torture allegations if he enters the country. Even though officials claimed Bush had diplomatic immunity because he was a former head of state, they recognized that torture is a legitimate crime under international law. Organizers of the event felt the “atmosphere had become too threatening” and the gala went on without Bush.
Since Bush left office he has traveled outside the United States on two occasions with former president Bill Clinton. The first was a 2010 trip to Haiti after the devastating earthquake where he made a complete fool of himself. After shaking hands with a desperate survivor he scowled in disgust and wiped his hand on Clinton’s shoulder as if it was covered in filth:

U.S. Maintains Embargo of Cuba After 50 Years, Despite International Condemnation

“Isn’t it time we at least start talking to Cuba? Are we still in 5th grade?” –KTRN
There are no commemorations planned in Washington, D.C., but today marks the 50th anniversary of the U.S. embargo against Cuba — the longest-running embargo in the world. On February 7, 1962, President John F. Kennedy formally expanded the harsh regime of commercial and financial sanctions against Cuba that have continued to the present day. The embargo has been solidly bipartisan, notably intensifying under the Helms-Burton Act of 1996, which was passed by a Republican-controlled Congress and signed into law by President Bill Clinton, a Democrat. The United States has targeted Cuba in defiance of widespread international condemnation. “That’s been the longest-enduring embargo we have had in the world. And the question is, why is it still there? What good has it done? Of course, it has squeezed the Cuban people,” said Michael Ratner, president emeritus of the Center for Constitutional Rights, who has been involved in efforts to challenge the U.S. embargo against Cuba for many years.

Bill Clinton Would Raise Debt Ceiling, Bypass Congress

“Bill Clinton may come off as a cool guy, but in reality, he’s just like the rest of them.” –KTRN
Bill Clinton says if he were president, he would not hesitate to raise the debt-ceiling himself under authority he argues is granted by the U.S. Constitution.
The two-term Democrat, who squared off with Republicans during two government shutdowns, contended in an interview Monday that the 14th Amendment allows for the president to ensure the nation’s debt is covered. He said he would “force the courts to stop me.”
“I think the Constitution is clear, and I think this idea that the Congress gets to vote twice on whether to pay for [expenditures] it has appropriated is crazy,” Clinton said in a talk with Joe Conason of the National Memo.
Whether the 14th Amendment does, indeed, provide the president with the power to unilaterally raise–or ignore–the debt ceiling has been the subject of fierce debate among legal scholars. The language of Section 4 of the amendment states that the “validity of the public debt . . . shall not be questioned,” leading Clinton and some advocates to argue that the executive branch can take steps to ensure that the nation does not default on its obligations.
But others, including liberal scholar Laurence Tribe, a professor at Harvard Law School who once taught President Obama, contend that the amendment means that Congress, which holds the power of the purse, is under a constitutional obligation to cover its past appropriations by extending the nation’s borrowing authority.
“Nothing in the 14th Amendment or in any other constitutional provision suggests that the president may usurp legislative power to prevent a violation of the Constitution,” Tribe wrote in a recent op-ed in the New York Times.
But that is not a universal opinion. Other scholars argue that the debt ceiling itself is a violation of the 14th Amendment because it allows Congress to play “political games” with the nation’s credit. And there are some, like Clinton, who believe that Obama could essentially declare a national emergency and raise the debt ceiling under Section 4 of the 14th amendment.

Republican Rep. Warns of Obama Impeachment If GOP Forces Debt Default

By: Stephen C. Webster
A Republican member of the House of Representatives declared today that President Barack Obama could be impeached if the U.S. defaults on its debts.
The comment is from Rep. Steve King (R-IA), who told his followers on Twitter that they should “stop talking about” a potential U.S. default.
“The 1st dime of each $1 of revenue services debt,” he wrote. “Obama would be impeached if he blocked debt payments.”
The comment is ironic in that Republicans have played the largest role in pushing the U.S. government to the brink of defaulting on some debts by refusing to lift the nation’s debt ceiling.
Congressional Republicans raised the ceiling nine times during the Bush administration, adding over $4 trillion to the nation’s debts. President Obama, as a freshman Senator from Illinois, voted in 2006 against raising the debt ceiling, but has since called his decision a mistake of inexperience.
Today the president and Treasury are warning that if the debt limit is not raised before August 2, the government will be forced to default on some of its debts. President Obama even warned that Social Security checks might not arrive on time, or at all, if Congress cannot secure a deal.
Republicans have repeatedly sidelined talks, insisting that tax increases for the wealthiest Americans and corporations are unacceptable, as are cuts to national defense. They’ve instead focused on plans that would eliminate Medicare, dip into the Social Security fund and dramatically reduce the government’s workforce.
With his remarks Monday, King became the second House Republican to suggest the president could be impeached over the debt ceiling debacle. Rep. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) previously claimed that if President Obama simply declared the debt ceiling to be unconstitutional based upon a provision of the 14th Amendment that validates the nation’s debts, he’d be impeached for it.
That’s precisely the route former President Bill Clinton said he’d take, were he in President Obama’s shoes. Clinton told The National Memo in an interview earlier this month that he’d override the debt limit based upon the 14th Amendment and “force the courts to stop me.”
President Obama has said that is not an option for his administration.

Former FCC Chairman to Be Top Cable Lobbyist
March 21, 2011 by admin

The Wall Street Journal
By: Amy Schatz
Michael Powell, the former top U.S. telecommunications regulator, will become the cable industry’s top lobbyist.
Mr. Powell is joining the cable industry’s trade association from Providence Equity Partners, where he was a senior advisor, and Broadband for America, an industry group which pressed for less regulation on Internet lines. He was chairman of the Federal Communications Commission until January 2005.
In a statement, Mr. Powell said he was excited to “help lead companies committed not only to their businesses, but to improving U.S. competitiveness and supporting invaluable programs in important areas such as education.”
He replaces former National Cable & Telecommunications Association president Kyle McSlarrow, who said last week that he’ll be joining Comcast Corp.
Mr. Powell, a Republican, joined the FCC in 1997 under President Bill Clinton and was later elevated to chairman by President George W. Bush in 2001. Earlier in his career, Mr. Powell served as a policy advisor at the Defense Department and served as an armored cavalry officer in the U.S. Army before sustaining a serious injury which left him hospitalized for a year. He is the son of former Secretary of State Colin Powell.
His tenure at the FCC was rocky, as the FCC struggled to update the nation’s media ownership rules, considered controversial broadcast indecency complaints – most notably the 2004 Janet Jackson Super Bowl wardrobe malfunction – and tried to deregulate phone and Internet lines.
Mr. Powell was among the first regulators to call for basic consumer protection rules on Internet lines, which he dubbed “the four freedoms.” Those principles later formed the foundation for controversial “net neutrality” rules on Internet lines passed in late December by the FCC. Those rules would bar Internet providers from deliberately blocking or slowing legal websites or services and would require them to offer more information about their services to subscribers.
