Of course there are some health staples you should never be without—bandages or OTC pain relievers come to mind. But you can treat or cure a surprising number of minor ailments with these unexpected household objects and foods.
Next time you burn your tongue on piping hot pizza or come down with an unshakeable case of hiccups, keep these tips from The Big Doctors Book of Home Remedies in mind.
Home cure: Vodka
Use it for: Foot odor
If your feet smell less than swell, wipe them down with a vodka-soaked washcloth to get rid of the stench. It’s the same principle as rubbing alcohol (which works equally well if you’d rather drink your Grey Goose). Vodka contains alcohol, which is antiseptic and drying, so it destroys odor-causing fungus and bacteria and dries out the moisture that lets these organisms grow.
Home cure: Pencil
Use it for: Headaches
When you’re stressed or anxious, you subconsciously clench your jaw and teeth; this strains the muscle that connects your jaw to your temples and can trigger a tension headache. A solution: “Put a pencil between your teeth but don’t bite,” says Fred Sheftell, MD, director of the New England Center for Headache in Stamford, CT. You automatically relax your jaw muscle to do this, which can prevent the pain.
Home cure: Yogurt
Use it for: Bad breath
Preliminary research shows that the live bacteria in yogurt can suppress levels of bad breath-causing bacteria. “Good” bugs in yogurt may crowd out the “bad” stink-causing bacteria or create an unhealthy environment for it, says John C. Moon, DDS, a cosmetic and general dentist in Half Moon Bay, CA.
Home cure: Listerine
Use it for: Blisters
The classic breath freshener—and powerful antiseptic—can also do a number on blisters. Moisten a cotton ball with Listerine and dab it on your blister 3 times a day until the area dries out and no longer hurts, says Janet Maccaro, PhD, CNC, a holistic nutritionist and certified nutrition consultant in Scottsdale, AZ.
Home cure: Lemon balm tea
Use it for: Cold sores
Lemon balm is a first-choice herbal treatment for cold sores, which are caused by a type of herpes virus (not the same kind that’s sexually transmitted). It has antiviral properties that work to tame herpes outbreaks, says James Duke, PhD, author of The Green Pharmacy. Prepare lemon balm tea by brewing 2 to 4 tablespoons of the herb per cup of boiling water. Let it cool, then dot with a cotton ball on the cold sore several times a day.
Home cure: Licorice
Use it for: Calluses and corns
“Licorice contains estrogen-like substances that soften the hard skin of calluses and corns,” says Georgianna Donadio, PhD, director of the National Institute of Whole Health. Make this homemade licorice paste: Grind up a few licorice sticks, mix them with ½ teaspoon of petroleum jelly, and rub the mixture into the rough areas of your feet.
Home cure: Tennis ball
Use it for: Achy feet
For an easy, free mini massage that stretches and soothes your arches, slip off your shoes and roll each foot over a tennis ball, golf ball, or soup can for a minute or two. To cool throbbing feet, roll them over a bottle of frozen water.

Have you ever heard of Trace Minerals? It comes in a little bottle. This stuff is unlike anything you can get anywhere. It comes from this 500 million year old ancient sediment bedrock plant. It’s the most bizarre thing in the world! It’s like compressed plants from the purest time in earth’s history; 500 million years ago. My good friend, Dr. Morter, has the exclusive rights to this place, and he gets the colloidal plant-based minerals from this 500 million year old source. It comes in liquid form, and you can put a drop or two in water and drink it, which allows you to get a massive amount of minerals in your system. This is especially important in America because about 6 to 8 feet of top soil was blown away during the dust bowl. Since the 1930’s, the mineral concentration in America’s food supply has massively depleted. You’d have to eat 5 to 8 carrots today just to receive the same nutritional value as 1 carrot back in the 20’s. It’s shocking!
It basically comes to this: all of you are deficient in minerals, which leads to a whole host of diseases. There was a great audio years ago called “Dead Doctors Don’t Lie.” They talk about mineral depletion being the cornerstone of all nutritional deficiencies, which lead to illness and disease.
Trace Minerals are also great for cuts! If you cut yourself and you’re bleeding, you can put a few drops of the minerals on the cut and it coagulates the blood almost instantaneously. It has anti-bacterial action, so it won’t get infected. Not to mention the fact that it makes you heal quicker!
It even works on burns! I was fishing up in Canada with the Morters and we had an open fire, and on this open fire we had a cast iron skillet. Now, the skillet, including the handle, was cast iron; it was red hot! We were deep frying fish and potatoes in this cast iron skillet and it was just sitting there after we had eaten. Somebody left the cast iron skillet on the hot coal, so it was still red hot. Guess who decided to help clean up?! That’s right, yours truly! So, I strolled over there like a big dope and proceeded to grab the handle of this red hot, cast iron skillet to move it off the fire to clean it, you know, being the good Samaritan that I was.
As you can imagine, I virtually got third degree burns on my hand. I mean it blistered instantly! And here I was in screaming pain and am thinking, ‘Oh my god, the trip is going to be ruined! This is my whole hand! There are blisters all over the inside of my hand! This is horrible and we’re in the middle of nowhere!’ We were dropped off on a float plane, so there was literally no place to go.
Well, of course Dr. Morter just whips out his Trace Minerals that he carries with him everywhere and says, ‘Here, let me just put a few drops of this on. First let’s douse it in some ice water then we’ll put on some minerals. Now, I want you to rub the minerals into the blisters and then we’ll go back and forth between ice water and rubbing the minerals into the blisters.’
The whole time I’m thinking, ‘What are these little drops of minerals going to do?’ He must have known I was thinking it because he says to me, ‘Trust me. It will be fine tomorrow.’
I go, ‘This is impossible, they’re blistered already’…
‘Trust me, it’ll be fine tomorrow.’
I go, ‘Doc, look, I don’t know if you’re a burn expert, but these are like third degree burns! I mean, I may need skin grafting! This is unbelievably painful! I don’t know if I can fish, this is…’
‘Trust me,’ he said, ‘I know what I’m doing.’
So, he rubbed in those Trace Minerals on my burn and I hopped on the boat and we went fishing afterwards. That was a shore lunch, so we’re fishing in the afternoon and I’m rubbing the Trace Minerals on my burn and thinking, ‘this is not going to do anything.’
When I went to bed that night, I was surprised that the pain had subsided, because I thought it was going to be just painful and I wouldn’t be able to sleep. I woke up the next morning, got up, went into the bathroom, put some water on my face, brushed my teeth and went to look for some coffee. I then sat down, had some coffee, chatted with some of the other guys and all of a sudden Dr. Morter said, ‘How’s the hand?’ And I go, ‘Oh, I forgot about the hand!’ I had totally forgotten about the hand, so I looked down and you could see where the blisters were and where it was burnt, but the blisters were flat and there was no pain at all. It was 80% healed in one night! It was the most unbelievable thing I’ve ever seen!
Now, since that time, I travel with these Trace Minerals everywhere I go. It is one of the things that is in my travel bag 100% of the time because if I get a cut, burn, bee sting or insect bite, all I have to do is put the Trace Minerals on and I’ll be good to go! If I have a sore throat when I’m travelling, I put about 8 drops in a little bit of water and gargle with it. It basically kills all the bacteria in your throat and cures yourself of a sore throat! When I’m travelling, I always put a few drops in some water and drink it to make sure I get plenty of minerals in my system. Minerals are the key to good health. Without minerals, forget it! Without minerals, you have no health at all!
I would encourage you to get Dr. Morter’s Trace Minerals. Dr. Morter is the only one that has the minerals that are, quite frankly, any good. It’s a miracle product! I see people’s energy level skyrocket when they start putting a few drops in some water and drink it everyday!
I take it. I travel with it. I wouldn’t leave home without it. Trace Minerals.
