Antidepressants Could Cause Harm to Heart, Brain, and Bones

“Let’s not forget that antidepressants also cause … depression.” –KTRN

Did you know that roughly 10% of the American population suffers from depression? It isn’t exactly a coincidence, with the FDA approving a wide variety of damaging foods and drugs that many millions of Americans consume each day. The FDA isn’t helping the population with their approval of the dozens of antidepressant medications on the market – it in fact is doing the exact opposite.

The beneficial results of antidepressants have been under the spotlight for quite some time in the health world, and the validity of giving them out like candy to patients in need of a quick and easy solution is under question as well; just how useful is medication for depression?

At best, the tangible results felt by patients are comparable to sugar pills. That is to say, the medication itself does virtually nothing to improve the mood of the patient directly. At worst, antidepressants cause decreased mental stability. Wanting to kill yourself or others around you are feelings which antidepressants have been shown to ignite.

There is even the possibility that while on these terrible drugs you can become even more vulnerable to more serious mental illnesses – all whilst other legitimate non-medication methods for treating depression are being tread underfoot by the FDA.

In more recent studies, there has been surfacing evidence that antidepressants cause arteries to thicken at a faster rate. Research specifically points to an increased thickness of the lining of the carotid artery by up to 5% in men, thereby increasing the risk of heart disease substantially by putting more pressure on the heart.

Vitamin D Found To Help Reduce Fracture Risk In Young People, Too

“Vitamin D isn’t just for adults. Everyone should think about supplementing with the miracle vitamin. It’s a no brainier.” –KTRN

Healthy bones require a lot more than just calcium intake, and a number of studies over the years have verified that vitamin D also plays a critical role in helping to prevent bone fractures, particularly among the elderly. But a new study published in the journal Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine has found that vitamin D is critical for young people as well, as inadequate or deficient levels can lead to stress fractures.

Kendrin R. Sonneville, Sc.D., R.D., from Children’s Hospital Boston and his colleagues evaluated 6,712 preadolescent and adolescent girls between the ages of nine and 15 as part of a study known as Growing Up Today. In it, the girls were evaluated and compared based on their consumption patterns of calcium, vitamin D, and dairy products, the latter of which is often attributed in marketing campaigns to building strong bones.

During the seven-year followup period, researchers discovered that 3.9 percent of the girls developed stress fractures, and that dairy and calcium intake did not appear to make a difference in stress fracture risk. Vitamin D intake, however, was clearly associated with stress fracture risk, as girls whose vitamin D intake was highest had the lowest rates of stress fractures, and vice versa.

“In contrast, there was no evidence that calcium and dairy intakes were protective against developing a stress fracture or that soda intake was predictive of an increased risk of stress fracture or confounded the association between dairy, calcium or vitamin D intakes and fracture risk,” said the authors about their findings, noting also that calcium intake was actually associated with an increased risk of stress fracture.

Calcium, of course, has been shown in other studies to strengthen bones, but this is only when it is consumed in proper balance with other bone-building nutrients like vitamin D, vitamin K2, and various essential minerals and fatty acids. Taking the right forms of calcium is also crucial, as many popular supplement forms are not easily metabolized in the body, and can actually cause bodily harm

Remote controls may not be for just appliances anymore. In a new small study, women with severe osteoporosis were implanted with a microchip that releases bone-building drugs at the push of a button, a delivery method that could someday become common for various health conditions.

Roughly 1.5-by-2.5 inches in size, the microchip significantly improved patient compliance with a drug regimen that normally requires painful daily self-injections, study authors said. The clinical trial, conducted on seven osteoporosis patients in Denmark, was the first to test a wirelessly controlled microchip in this capacity.

“It frees patients from the burden of managing their disease on a daily basis,” said Robert Farra, co-author of the study and president and chief operating officer of MicroCHIPS Inc., the Waltham, Mass., company that funded and supervised the trial. “I think there will be a class of drugs [for other conditions] that will be very suitable to use the chip for . . we were very pleased with the results.”

Understand The Calcium Myth

Natural News

By Dr. David Jockers

For years we have been taught that calcium was the great solution to weakened bones. Pre and post-menopausal women are recommended to take calcium supplements to prevent bone loss and osteoporosis. New research has shown that the theory of calcium supplementation improving bone health is a myth.

Calcium is the cornerstone mineral in bones. However, calcium consumption does not build bones. Countries with the highest dietary calcium consumption (US, Canada, & Scandinavian countries) have the highest rates of osteoporosis.

A recent meta-analysis published in the British Medical Journal showed that calcium supplementation actually increased the risk of heart attacks. This study and others have looked at individuals taking calcium supplements in isolation without other key nutrients that play a role in calcium homeostasis.

Nanobacteria use the little calcium blocks to form hard shells of calcium phosphate as protection against the body’s immune system. This is similar to a snail using a shell as a form of armor from predators. This encapsulation provides a hiding spot for pathogenic bacteria, viruses and parasites. This promotes a continual inflammatory process in the area around the calcium shell creating plaque formation.

Proper Calcium Mineralization Depends upon Vitamin D3 and Vitamin K2
These nutrients stimulate the activity of the osteoblastic protein osteocalcin. Osteocalcin acts to strongly absorb and selectively place calcium from the bloodstream into the bone matrix. This acts like a vacuum, creating a very strong pull that sucks the excess calcium stones out of the bloodstream and possibly out of mineralized plaques.

Osteocalcin only becomes active when adequate levels of vitamin K2 are present. Vitamin K2 and vitamin D3 also act to inhibit osteoclasts, which act to break down bone. Most individuals are both deficient in D3 and K2. This creates an environment of poor calcium metabolism that leads to weakened bones and calcium deposition in soft tissues.

The bones also need a good mix of essential minerals and fatty acids for healthy bone function. This includes plant-derived magnesium and silica as well as animal forms of saturated fat and the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids EPA & DHA.

The best forms of silica come from cucumbers, celery, bell peppers, horsetail, nettles, oat straw & alfalfa. Magnesium comes from many different sources including nuts, seeds, legumes and green vegetables. The best source of magnesium is raw, organic cacao and high quality dark chocolate.

Effective All Natural Treatments for Arthritis

May 23, 2011 by admin

May 23rd, 2011

DrAxe.com

By: Dr. Axe

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention an estimated 50 million Americans have one form of arthritis or another. An estimated 50% of United States adults over the age of 65 reported being told by a doctor that they have arthritis. But arthritis isn’t just impacting the older groups of Americans. It’s estimated that by 2030 there will be 67 million Americans over the age of eighteen suffering with arthritis.

Arthritis is characterized by stiff, aching, hard to move joints and bones. The most common type of arthritis impacting 33 million American adults is osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage between the bones at joint wears down. This allows the bones to rub together rather than giving them the protection and cushion of cartilage. This deterioration goes on to affect the shape and functionality of the joints too making it difficult for that joint to continue to function normally. Additionally, more complications can arise. There may be fluid in the joint area that is low on a certain chemical, hyaluronan, which protects the joint. This decrease in hyaluronan has a negative impact on how the joint absorbs shocks.

Another common complication with osteoarthritis is when pieces of bone or cartilage float around within the fluid causing pain and irritation. Bone spurs may also develop on the end of bones leading to pain and discomfort.

When it comes to osteoarthritis one thing you can be sure of is there is discomfort and pain. Do you or someone you know have this sometimes debilitating disease? Do you know what the signs of osteoarthritis are?

Symptoms of Osteoarthritis

The symptoms vary when you have osteoarthritis. However, the two most common are stiffness and pain. The stiffness is most common when the sufferer wakes up in the morning or when he or she moves from a spot in which they were resting.

Some joints are more commonly impacted by osteoarthritis than others. Here are the most commonly affected joints:

Lower back
Hip
Knees
Feet
Neck
Fingers
Thumb base

If you suffer with osteoarthritis in one of these places you may have difficulty do any or all of the following:

Walking
Climbing stairs
Lifting objects
Grasping or holding objects
Doing intricate, detailed work such as knitting or needlepoint
What are the Causes of Osteoarthritis?

In searching for cures for osteoarthritis many researchers look to find the cause first. There is no one known cause for osteoarthritis but rather osteoarthritis is made up of more than one cause.

Here are some of the factors believed to contribute to osteoarthritis:

Genes
Weight
Injury
Overuse
Rheumatoid arthritis
Metabolic conditions

When it comes to genes there’s a theory that people with osteoarthritis may have a genetic defect in the gene that makes up collagen. Collagen is important in making cartilage. This could potentially lead to weakened cartilage that wears down after just a few years or decades of use.

In addition, certain people may have genes that result in malformed and shaped bones and joints that lead to uneven or deeper wearing of the cartilage based on how it rubs together.

When it comes to weight you probably know by now that being overweight brings on a host of health issues. But until now you may not have considered osteoarthritis to be one of those. However, your hips and knees bear most of your bodies’ weight and if you’re overweight you’re putting additional strain and stress on your body.

According to Arthritis Today, for every pound of weight you gain you put an additional three pounds of weight on your knees. This is a lot of extra strain for your knees and hips.

6 Foods That Weaken Bones

March 1, 2011 by admin

March 1st, 2011

AOL Health

By: Caring.com

What you eat plays a big role in whether you’re getting the nutrients you need to build strong bones. What might surprise you, though, is that your diet can also play a role in sapping bone strength. Some foods actually leach the minerals right out of the bone, or they block the bone’s ability to regrow. Here, the six biggest bone-sappers:

1. Salt
Salt saps calcium from the bones, weakening them over time. For every 2,300 milligrams of sodium you take in, you lose about 40 milligrams of calcium, dietitians say. One study compared postmenopausal women who ate a high-salt diet with those who didn’t, and the ones who ate a lot of salt lost more bone minerals. Our American diet is unusually salt-heavy; most of us ingest double the 2,300 milligrams of salt we should get in a day, according to the 2005 federal dietary guidelines.

What to do: The quickest, most efficient way to cut salt intake is to avoid processed foods. Research shows that most Americans get 75 percent of their sodium not from table salt but from processed food. Key foods to avoid include processed and deli meats, frozen meals, canned soup, pizza, fast food such as burgers and fries, and canned vegetables.

2. Soft drinks
Soft drinks pose a double-whammy danger to bones. The fizziness in carbonated drinks often comes from phosphoric acid, which ups the rate at which calcium is excreted in the urine. Meanwhile, of course, soft drinks fill you up and satisfy your thirst without providing any of the nutrients you might get from milk or juice.

What to do: When you’re tempted to reach for a cola, instead try milk, calcium- and vitamin D-fortified orange juice, or a fruit smoothie made with yogurt. Or just drink water when you’re thirsty, and eat a diet high in bone-building nutrients.

3. Caffeine
The numbers for caffeine aren’t as bad as for salt, but caffeine’s action is similar, leaching calcium from bones. For every 100 milligrams of caffeine (the amount in a small to medium-sized cup of coffee), you lose 6 milligrams of calcium. That’s not a lot, but it can become a problem if you tend to substitute caffeine- containing drinks like iced tea and coffee for beverages that are healthy for bones, like milk and fortified juice.

What to do: Limit yourself to one or two cups of coffee in the morning, then switch to other drinks that don’t have caffeine’s bone-sapping action. Adding milk to your coffee helps to offset the problem, of course.

4. Vitamin A
In the case of vitamin A, recent research is proving that you really can get too much of a good thing. Found in eggs, full-fat dairy, liver, and vitamin-fortified foods, vitamin A is important for vision and the immune system. But the American diet is naturally high in vitamin A, and most multivitamins also contain vitamin A. So it’s possible to get much more than the recommended allotment of 5,000 IUs (international units) a day — which many experts think is too high anyway.

Postmenopausal women, in particular, seem to be susceptible to vitamin A overload. Studies show that women whose intake was higher than 5,000 IUs had more than double the fracture rate of women whose intake was less than 1,600 IUs a day.

What to do: Switch to low-fat or nonfat dairy products only, and eat egg whites rather than whole eggs (all the vitamin A is in the yolk). Also check your multivitamin, and if it’s high in vitamin A, switch to one that isn’t.

5. Alcohol
Think of alcohol as a calcium-blocker; it prevents the bone-building minerals you eat from being absorbed. And heavy drinking disrupts the bone remodeling process by preventing osteoblasts, the bone-building cells, from doing their job. So not only do bones become weaker, but when you do suffer a fracture, alcohol can interfere with healing.

What to do: Limit your drinking to one drink a day, whether that’s wine, beer, or hard alcohol.

6. Hydrogenated oils
Recent studies have found that the process of hydrogenation, which turns liquid vegetable oil into the solid oils used in commercial baking, destroys the vitamin K naturally found in the oils. Vitamin K is essential for strong bones, and vegetable oils such as canola and olive oil are the second-best dietary source of this key nutrient, after green leafy vegetables. However, the amounts of vitamin K we’re talking about are tiny here — one tablespoon of canola oil has 20 micrograms of K, and one tablespoon of olive oil has 6 micrograms, as compared with 120 micrograms in a serving of spinach.

What to do: If you’re eating your greens, you don’t need to worry about this too much. If you’re a big lover of baked goods like muffins and cookies, bake at home using canola oil when possible, and read labels to avoid hydrogenated oils.
