“Isn’t is mind boggling that people are still consuming aspartame, especially after all we know about the dangerous side effects?” –KTRN
For a great majority of Americans who consume processed food, food additives are an ever-present component of the menu and one with serious health effects. In the United States as well as in Canada, aspartame – an artificial low-calorie sweetener – has been used as a food additive as early as 1981 after it was approved for use in dry goods. It was approved again in the US in 1983 for carbonated drinks. This approval came in the face of much opposition which has not seen any respite over the ensuing years despite the claims of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) of the World Health Organization that aspartame is safe for use.
Why aspartame is dangerous
75 percent of reported adverse reaction to food additives is attributed to aspartame. Of these reactions, many are serious and include seizures and death. A number of the 90 documented symptoms as reportedly caused by aspartame are headaches/migraines, dizziness, seizures, nausea, numbness, rashes, depression, irritability, insomnia, hearing loss, vision problems, loss of taste vertigo and memory los.
Those who study the adverse effects of aspartame report that the following medical conditions are triggered or worsened by aspartame: brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, mental retardation, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, lymphoma, birth defects, diabetes and fibromyalgia.
And that’s not all — according to Victoria Iness-Brown in her book “My Aspartame Experiment,” aspartame is also addictive.
What is aspartame composed of?
To understand the effects of aspartame one must look at its genetic composition. This substance – which is 200 times sweeter than sugar – is made of 50 percent phenylalanine, 40 percent aspartic acid and ten percent methanol.

The True Risks Of Cell Phone Use

Cells phones are one of the most utilized, most convenient inventions of the twentieth century. While there are definite advantages to using cell phones, e.g., being in contact with loved ones at all times, as with any convenience or luxury there are usually some downfalls or consequences. With cell phones the consequences can be detrimental and therefore, should not be dismissed lightly.
Cell phones are a source of electromagnetic fields, radiation which creates change in anything it comes into contact with. EMFs emanate from mobile phones and because of how phones are used, these EMFs come into direct contact with the brain.
More than a dozen studies have linked using a cell phone for a long period of time — ten years or more — with a higher incidence of brain tumors and acoustic neuromas. These critical diagnoses are even more common when phones aren’t switched from one side of the head to the other when engaged in conversation.
Other adverse health effects include:
• Evidence of leukemia, breast cancer and other cancers.
• Neurological concerns and changes in the nervous system.
• A much higher risk of salivary gland tumors.
A study from the Medical University of Graz in Austria showed that cell phone use negatively affects sperm quality in men. A similar study from 2009 examined men in the height of their reproductive years and found infertility and the ability to father a healthy baby were compromised by cell phone usage.
Cells phones are also a source of perfluorooctanoic acid, a harmful chemical which has been linked to heart disease, cancer and female reproductive/developmental damage.
Cell phones are not the only problem. Cell phone towers, as well as other wireless devices, are responsible for contributing non-ionizing radio frequencies into the environment. Both the World Health Organization and the International Association for Research on Cancer have classified the electromagnetic fields emitted by cell phones as a 2B, possible carcinogen. The towers and the phones themselves are constantly emitting microwave radiation. Even when cell phones are not in use they are putting out EMFs.

5 Reasons To Drink Coffee

The Huffington Post
By: Delia Lloyd
Ever have one of those mornings where you wake up, jump in the shower, turn on the radio and hear the best news you’ve gotten in ages?
No, not world peace, but close.
Apparently, coffee is now good for you. It holds a host of physical — not to mention psychological — benefits which scientists are only now beginning to appreciate.
In a household where our espresso machine holds a hallowed place, this is definitely grounds for rejoicing. I haven’t been this excited since I learned that sugar made a comeback.
So hear ye, hear ye: Five reasons to drink (more!) coffee:
1. It reduces depression in women. This just in. A new study out of Harvard University shows that women who regularly drink coffee — the fully caffeinated kind — have a 20 percent lower risk of depression than nondrinkers. This comes on the heels of previous research showing that the risk of suicide decreases with increased coffee consumption.
2. It lowers the risk of lethal prostate cancer in men. But it’s not just the ladies who will benefit from more java. In another study out of Harvard (what are they drinking there? ahem!), men who drank six or more cups per day had a 60 percent lower risk of developing the most lethal type of prostate cancer, and a 20 percent lower risk of forming any type of prostate cancer compared to men who did not drink coffee. Given that prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men, that’s nothing to sneeze at.
3. It may protect against head and neck cancers. A study from the University of Utah showed that people who drank more than four cups of coffee a day had a 39 percent decreased risk of cancers of the oral cavity and pharynx combined, compared with those who didn’t drink coffee. Regular consumption of coffee has also been linked to a lower risk for brain tumors, reduced rates of colorectal and endometrial cancer, as well as liver cancer and cirrhosis.
4. It may ward off Alzheimer’s disease. Several studies looking at how caffeine affects brain development in mice have confirmed that caffeine significantly decreases abnormal levels of the protein linked to Alzheimer’s disease. When aged mice bred to develop symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease were given caffeine — the equivalent of five cups of coffee a day — their memory impairment was reversed, according to a report issued by the Florida Alzheimer’s Disease Research Centre. Should these results be replicated on humans, it might suggest coffee as an effective treatment for this disease, rather than just a protective strategy.
5. It appears to stave off diabetes. Numerous studies have shown that coffee may be protective against Type 2 Diabetes, although the precise mechanism is not well understood. An analysis in the Archives of Internal Medicine, for example, found that people who drink three to four cups of coffee a day are 25 percent less likely to develop Type 2 diabetes than those who drink fewer than two cups. In the U.S. alone, nearly 24 million children and adults — nearly 8 percent of the population — have diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of the disease and accounts for about 90 to 95 percent of these cases.
Whether these studies will prove robust in coming years — or be cancelled out by some of caffeine’s adverse effects on things like sleep and high blood pressure — remains to be seen.
But I’m going to blithely hedge my bets and carry on enjoying my cuppa (or two).
Latte or Cappucino?

Did you know that technology can seriously damage your health? Tragically most people still don’t get it. The World Health Organisation (W.H.O.) states very clearly that there are serious health risks from current exposure levels to electronic fields coming from wi-fi, laptops, mobile phones and ipads. Exposure to them increases the risk of cancer, brain tumours, autism, diabetes, chronic fatigue, hay fever and depression.
They state that we are being kept in the dark about these effects due to the fact that “present sources of funding bias the interpretation of findings towards rejection of evidence of possible health risks”
Is it more than just a coincidence that the health of billions of people are being affected since the introduction of technology in the 1980′s.
A staggering 220 million people now suffer from diabetes. This is set to rise to 400 million by the year 2030.
Do you think that it can’t happen to you or your children? Think again. Autism is more common than childhood cancer, diabetes and AIDS combined. Approximately 70 million people worldwide are affected by autism. This number has increased 6,000% in the past 20 years.
Why have we suddenly become intolerant to food? Is it just the chemicals we put in our food that have caused it? THINK AGAIN.
Over 270 million people in the world now suffer from food allergies. Approximately 3 million of them are children under the age of 18. That is a 400% increase worldwide in 20 years.
1 in 4 European children under the age of 10 suffers from an allergy.
Potentially fatal peanut allergies now affect one in 70 children.
An estimated 300 million people worldwide suffer from Asthma, with 250,000 deaths attributed to the disease. That is a 300% increase in asthma in the last 20 years.
ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION
About 10 million people in the U.S. alone suffer from ADHD (Attention Deficit Hypersensitivity Disorder). Worldwide there was a 400% increase in ADHD in the last 20 years.
2.5m people now suffer from Multiple Sclerosis
ONE IN FIVE people in the world suffers from hay fever which is expected to triple between now and 2030.
ARE YOU LISTENING
Planning to have children, – you had better hurry up. The average man has lost 53% of sperm production over the last 50 years. At the present rate of decline it will take 70 years before the sperm count goes to zero.
31% of pregnancies now end in miscarriage. This number increased between 2005 and 2009 by 15%. In the same period 25% more women received treatment for infertility.
80% of the world’s population suffer from sleeping disorders. In the U.S. 40 million people suffer from some type of sleeping disorder.
COULD IT JUST BE A COINCIDENCE THAT:
1. MOBILE PHONE SALES ROSE FROM 50 MILLION IN 1995 TO 5 BILLION BY 2010
2. THERE WERE 1 BILLION PC’S IN USE AROUND THE WORLD IN 2008
3. THIS NUMBER WILL DOUBLE BY 2013 TO 2 BILLION
4. BY 2012 THERE ARE EXPECTED TO BE 14 BILLION DEVICES CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET
5 6.1 TRILLION TEXT MESSAGES WERE SAID TO BE SENT IN 2010
Do you want to know who benefits from all of our bad health – drug companies!
One of the world’s largest drug companies, Pfizer, saw profits rise from $10.02 Billion dollars in 1995 to $67.8 billion dollars in 2010.
Worldwide sales of drugs in 2012 were a staggering $830 billion dollars.
Global Pharmaceutical sales are expected to reach $1.1 Trillion dollars by 2014
DO YOU STILL NOT GET IT
Technology can damage your health and only one group of people benefit. IT IS NOT YOU.
Anybody could be one of the next two billion sufferers, your sister, brother, mother, father, grandparent, grandchild, friend or colleague.
OR EVEN YOU.

Diet Soda Linked to Strokes and Vascular Disorders

By: Megan Heimer
Recently, every major media outlet reported on the “Northern Manhattan Study” which linked diet soda to strokes and vascular disorders. This study consisted of 2,564 individuals over the age of 40 who were followed for ten years. The results of the study showed that those who drank diet soda daily increased their risk of stroke by 48% and vascular disorders by 61% compared to those who did not drink diet soda. These media reports were also quick to point out that the study was preliminary, largely unsupported and lacked biological evidence; they explained how diet soda could possibly cause strokes, but it was not cause to change nutrition or dietary advice. However, it’s not hard to see how one famous ingredient in diet soda could be to blame.
Aspartame is just one of the many harmful ingredients found in diet soda. Aspartame is an artificial sweetener that is 200 times sweeter than sugar. This sweetener is dangerous because it is not stable in a liquid solution, and it consists of methanol which breaks down into formaldehyde and diketopiperazine – two neurotoxins known to wreak havoc on the nervous system. In addition, isolated aspartic acid and phenylalanine, two other components of aspartame, react with the breakdown of methanol, become toxic, and dangerously increase phenylalanine levels in the brain. The approval of Aspartame by the FDA in 1981 was controversial and highly opposed even by those on the panel because studies showed that aspartame produced seizures and brain tumors in lab animals. In one report, six out of seven monkeys fed aspartame-laced milk for a year developed seizures after every feeding, and the seventh one died.
In 1994, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released a report which showed that 75% of all adverse reactions reported through the FDA’s Adverse Reaction Monitoring System were due to aspartame. Per the FDA, only about 1% of the population reports a problem with something they consume. Thus, in 1994 alone, it is estimated that there were actually one million adverse reactions due to aspartame products with 39% of the complaints coming from diet soda. Prior to 1994, the Center for Disease Control reviewed many aspartame complaints consisting of neurological, gastrointestinal, and allergic reactions.
In addition, the 1994 “Official FDA Document” listed 92 symptoms associated with aspartame consumption, including 290 people who reported seizures and convulsions after consuming a product containing aspartame. Because this number is estimated to reflect only 1% of the actual number, the true number of seizures in 1994 could have been as high as 28,710. Today, adverse effects continue to rise as people increase their consumption of diet soda.
A vast amount of scholarly research has been conducted since the 1980′s linking aspartame in diet soda to various conditions including: aspartame poisoning, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, osteoporosis, arthritis, birth defects, tooth decay, dehydration, obesity, seizures, strokes, cardiovascular disease, eczema, sleeping problems, hair loss, muscle tremors, heart palpitations, memory loss, high blood pressure (another leading cause of stroke), chronic fatigue, menstrual problems, loss of libido, and joint pain.
These questions remain: Why are the studies, physician and consumer complaints, and research regarding the toxicity of this diet soda ingredient being overlooked, covered up, and brushed aside? Could it be because the truth about aspartame could discourage consumers from drinking diet soda, resulting in billion dollar losses? Or, could it be that aspartame research is funded largely by those with a stake in this money-making industry? Regardless of the answers, there is 30 years of extensive research linking aspartame to strokes and vascular disorders. Is diet soda worth the risks?

Cell Phones Increase Brain Activity

ABC Good Morning America
By: Courtney Hutchison
Fears concerning the possible dangers of prolonged cell phone use won’t go away, despite numerous studies showing no conclusive link between cell phones and brain tumors or cancer.
Now new data from the National Institutes of Health suggesting that cell phone radiation boosts brain activity is poised to stir the debate even further.
Researchers used PET scans to measure brain activity in 47 participants when they had cell phones held to their ears in both off and on but muted positions and found that exposure to an in-use cell phone for more than 50 minutes increased brain activity by about 7 percent in the regions closes to the antenna.
This suggests that while no link has been proven between adverse health effects and cell phone radiation, the human brain is sensitive in some way to the electromagnetic waves coming off of a cell phone.
Whereas past studies have looked at cerebral blood flow to measure changes in brain activity, this study measured the brain’s consumption of glucose — the fuel of the brain — in order to measure localized activity near the antenna.
“There have been several studies since the late 1990s trying to address whether the human brain is affected by the electromagnetic radiation from cell phones because it’s very, very weak,” said the lead author on the study, Dr. Nora Volkow of the National Institute on Drug Abuse. “The studies were very inconsistent, but we designed this study so it would be powered to detect small activity.
“This shows that the human brain is sensitive to these weak magnetic impulses.”
But sensitivity does not equal harm or an increased risk of cancer, Volkow says, and it may even turn out that the ability of this radiation to boost brain activity could have therapeutic effects. Further study is needed, however, to explore the potential detrimental or beneficial effects of such an increase in activity.
Although the research on this topic has been mixed and inconclusive, Volkow says, their findings reopen the debate about cell phone concerns and make it impossible to ignore that prolonged use over many years might have some kind of unknown effect on the brain.
Justified Caution or Cancer Conspiracy?
This study, published today in the Journal of the American Medical Association, does not speak to the possible cancer risks supposedly associated with cell phone use, but its findings may stir up past debates concerning the health hazards of America’s cell phone habit.
The cell phone-cancer debate began in the late ’90s as increasing use of cell phones both for work and play stirred interest in the potential effects of the small amounts of radiation emitted from any phone in use.
“Our bodies are exposed to electromagnetic radiation all the time, and it is relatively harmless in the low doses we receive,” Dr. Jennifer Smullen of the Department of Otology and Laryngology at Harvard Medical School said.
“But cell phone antennas are associated with strong electromagnetic fields and are placed close to our body.”

WHO Attempts to Cover Up Cancer/Cell Phone Link

Reuters
By Kate Kelland
Experts who studied almost 13,000 cell phone users over 10 years, hoping to find out whether the mobile devices cause brain tumors, said on Sunday their research gave no clear answer.
A study by the World Health Organisation’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the largest ever to look at possible links between mobile phones and brain cancer, threw up inconclusive results but researchers said suggestions of a possible link demanded deeper examination.
“The results really don’t allow us to conclude that there is any risk associated with mobile phone use, but… it is also premature to say that there is no risk associated with it,” the IARC’s director Christopher Wild told Reuters.
The results of the study have been keenly awaited by mobile phone companies and by campaign groups who have raised concerns about whether mobile phones cause brain tumors.
Years of research have failed to establish a connection.
The British-based GSM Association, which represents international cell phone firms, said IARC’s findings echoed “the large body of existing research and many expert reviews that consistently conclude that there is no established health risk.”
The Australian-based Mobile Manufacturers Forum also welcomed the study and backed “the need for ongoing research.”
Wild said part of the problem with this study, which was launched in 2000, was that rates of mobile phone usage in the period it covered were relatively low compared with today.
It was also based on people searching their memories to estimate how much time they spent on their cell phones, a method that can throw up inaccuracies.
European scientists last month launched what will now become the biggest ever study into the effects of mobile phone use on long-term health. It aims to track at least a quarter of a million of people in five European countries for up to 30 years.
This kind of study, called a prospective study, is considered more accurate because it does not require people to remember their cell phone use later but tracks it in real time.
SUGGESTION OF A RISK?
Data from the IARC study showed that overall, mobile telephone users in fact had a lower risk of brain cancer than people who had never used one, but the 21 scientists who conducted the study said this finding suggested problems with the method, or inaccurate information from those who took part.
Other results showed high cumulative call time may slightly raise the risk, but again the finding was not reliable.
“We can’t just conclude that there is no effect,” said Elisabeth Cardis of the Center for Research in Environmental Epidemiology in Barcelona, Spain, who led the study.
“There are indications of a possible increase. We’re not sure that it is correct. It could be due to bias, but the indications are sufficiently strong… to be concerned.”
Because of this, and because cell phone use is rising all the time, more research was needed, the scientists said.
The 21 scientists were part of a group known as the Interphone International Study Group which was funded in part by money from mobile phone companies. The study was published in the International Journal of Epidemiology.
Mobile phone use has increased dramatically since its introduction in the early-to-mid 1980s. About 5 billion mobile phones are currently in use worldwide.
The researchers said the majority of people covered in their study “were not heavy mobile phone users by today’s standards.”
The average lifetime cumulative call time for those who took part was around 100 hours, with an average of 2 to 2-1/2 hours of reported use a month. The heaviest 10 percent of users had clocked up an average of 1,640 hours of phone use spread over 10 years, which corresponds to about half an hour a day.
“Today, mobile phone use has become much more prevalent and it is not unusual for young people to use mobile phones for an hour or more a day,” the researchers wrote.
But increasing use is tempered by generally lower radiation emissions from modern phones and greater use of texting and hands-free sets that keep the phone away from the head, they said.
The study received 19.2 million euros ($24.4 million) in funding, around 5.5 million euros of which came from industry sources. It analyzed data from interviews with 2,708 people with a type of brain cancer called glioma and 2,409 with another type called meningioma, plus around 7,500 people with no cancer.
Participants were from Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden and Britain.

Scientists Warn About Risks of Cell Phones and Brain Cancer

David Gutierrez
A report issued by the International Electromagnetic Field Collaborative and endorsed by 43 scientists from 13 countries has reviewed the evidence linking cell phone use to brain tumors, and refuting the methodology of a forthcoming industry-funded study expected to give the phones a clean bill of health.
“I fear we will see a tsunami of brain tumors, although it is too early to see that now since the tumors have a 30-year latency,” study author Lloyd Morgan said. “I pray I’m wrong, but brace yourself.”
Among the research cited in the study was a recent study by a Swedish team of scientists that found a 420 percent higher risk of brain cancer among people who had started using cellular or cordless phones as teenagers. Older analog phones, which are now mostly off the market, had been found to increase cancer risk by 700 percent.
Because children are especially vulnerable to radiation, the report recommends that parents not allow their children under the age of 18 to use mobile phones except in emergencies, or to sleep with cellular phones under their pillows. It recommends using corded land lines whenever possible, and using cellular phones mostly as answering machines, turning them on only to check messages and return calls. Use of cell phones inside buildings or in cars increases cancer risk, as it increases the radiation a phone must emit to function. Use of text messages and non-wireless headsets can reduce cancer risk. The report also advises against carrying cell phones against the body, even in pockets.
“Some countries are already banning cell phones over health concerns, with France saying children in elementary schools can only use them for texting,” Morgan said.
The report also sets out 11 flaws in the forthcoming Interphone study, a study on cell phones and health being prepared by the wireless industry in 13 different countries. These flaws include the exclusion of non-cellular cordless phones (which also emit radiation), children and young adults (the most vulnerable demographics) from the study, the exclusion of certain types of tumors, and the exclusion of participants who died or were too sick to answer questions.
