Cleansing The Skepticism Surrounding Detoxification Diets

“Everyone should do some type of cleanse twice a year. The colon cleanse should be the first one you do.” –KTRN

A recent article published in The Science of Biology espouses the anti-detoxification views of Professor David Bender, professor emeritus of nutritional biochemistry at University College London. In his article, titled The Detox Delusion, Professor Bender claims that detoxification is a “meaningless marketing term,” even potentially dangerous to your health and unnecessary as a dieting tool. He further states, “I am not sure what ‘self-healing’ is and the idea of ‘raised energy levels’ is nonsense.”

For many in the mainstream medical and scientific community, it is not pharmaceutical drugs (killing approximately 100,000 each year), or pollutants found in our food, air and water that are dangerous. It is not the unstudied synergistic effect of the millions of tons of toxic waste released each year, creating a veritable toxic soup from which we breathe that may be dangerous to human health. Rather it is detoxification itself that poses a threat.

This community of “thinkers,” who largely agree with Bender, believe the body incapable of self-healing (i.e. every symptom must be suppressed rather than expressed). They obviously see that chemicals and pharmaceuticals can be useful in manipulating symptoms; however, they fail to appreciate the merit and influence of eliminating harmful chemicals from the body through detoxification. In short, they want it both ways.

Is detoxification a fanciful notion?
To consider the skepticism which often surrounds detoxification, one must start with two specific questions: Is it possible to rid the body of harmful chemicals via detoxification; and, if so, is it necessary? Natural health advocates answer “yes” to both questions while conventional science and medicine generally say “no”.

Setting aside the idea – which to some degree may be accurate – that every diet is based on some form of marketing scheme, the blanket claim that detoxification is completely unnecessary and even dangerous is absurd. Simply because it is possible that a person could harm him or herself when engaged in, let’s say, a severe diet or fast does not mean detoxification is dangerous.

Natural and Herbal Remedies for Constipation

Off The Grid

By Sarah

“Constipated? Do a colon cleanse.” –KTRN

This may be an uncomfortable topic for some, but it is one of great importance. If your body is not eliminating waste effectively, the build up of toxins can impair the immune system, making you sick. It will also cause unnecessary weight gain as the fecal matter collects in your colon and intestines.

Constipation is generally defined as the passing of hard, dry stools less than three times a week. It can make you feel uncomfortable and bloated and cause straining during bowel movements. Constipation can affect everyone from time to time. In general, your body should be eliminating several hours after each meal that you eat. If you eat three times a day you should be eliminating at least three times a day. If this is not the case, you could be carrying excess fecal material around, impacting overall health.

Remedies for Constipation:

  • Fluids – Proper hydration is the key to many ailments that can attack the body, including constipation. In general, we should drink at least sixty-four ounces (1/2 gallon) of water daily. A better guideline for adults is to take your weight in pounds and divide it in half to find the number of ounces of water you should drink. Example: A person weighting 150 pounds should drink a minimum of 75 ounces (1/2 gallon plus an additional 11 ounces). Also watch how much cola, coffee, and alcohol you drink. Caffeine and alcohol can dehydrate you.
  • Fiber – Eating foods high in fiber is your second line of defense. Insoluble fiber adds bulk to stools, making them easier to pass. Foods high in insoluble fiber include whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Try wheat bran, oat bran, brown rice, or whole-grain bread. Soluble fiber dissolves in water and forms a jelly-like substance in the intestines. Prunes and figs have soluble fiber and can be added to breakfast or eaten as a snack. Another fiber option is to sprinkle a teaspoon of ground flaxseed over any meal. You can find this in most grocery stores or a health food store. You can also take fiber supplements, such as Metamucil. It is important to add fiber to your diet gradually to avoid excess gas and bloating. Also be sure to drink plenty of water when adding more fiber.

How To Restart Your Metabolism With Ayurveda

At one point or another, just about all of us have tried to lose weight. With almost 75% of the American population either overweight or obese, this challenge is becoming seemingly more insurmountable every day. The typical quick diet programs and colon cleansings rarely provide any long-term benefit as the weight lost during those programs is usually gained back within weeks.

One of the main reasons for not being able to lose weight effectively is because the body`s metabolism is not up to speed. According to Ayurveda, the body`s main digestive fire, or Agni, is responsible for the remaining 12 sub-types of digestive and metabolic processes at various levels. Metabolic disruption in any of these can impede weight loss and overall health.

In conditions which cause an excessive accumulation of adipose or fatty-tissue, the medo dhatu agni (fat tissue metabolism) is invariably compromised. To reactivate it, there are a number of Ayurvedic therapies which can be done both internally and externally. Here are some of the easiest ones to try at home:

1. Add one teaspoon of Trikatu, Pancha Kola, or Hingu Ashtaka powder to meals
These powders are three of the best classical digestive appetizers. They promote the main digestive fire (Agni), which then helps to stimulate metabolism throughout the body. They also help to metabolize remnant toxins (Aama) in the digestive system and purify the alimentary canal. These powders can be added to a bowl of soup or rice and used for flavoring.

2. Massage your body with sesame oil and sit in the sun
Over time, the accumulated adipose or fatty tissue begins to harden, making it all the more difficult to remove. Sesame oil helps to penetrate the micro channels of the skin and increases circulation to the underlying tissue, thus promoting metabolism and the removal of toxins. Self-massage should be done for 15-30 minutes in a warm room, and then the body should be exposed to moderate sunlight until it sweats. Cover the head with a hat, and only stay in the sun until comfortably warm. Then rest for 10 minutes in the shade before taking a warm shower.

3. Take a hot salt-water bath once a week
Generalized swelling throughout the body can impede the removal of toxins, particularly from the lymphatic system. Usually this is due to an accumulation of the Kapha dosha (liquid element) in the body. Bathing once a week in a hot, salt-water bath helps to draw out these toxins through the sweat glands. The body, but not the head, should stay submerged until you feel comfortably warm and you sweat. After the bath, wear enough clothes to continue sweating and increase the excretion of toxins.

4. Dry massage with Triphala powder
Triphala powder is one of the greatest Ayurvedic remedies for a wide range of conditions. Its ability to break up toxins and scrape them away can be very useful to reduce fatty tissue all over the body. Take a warmed handful of powder and rub it firmly over the area against the direction of the hair follicles. Repeat this for up to 45 minutes and then brush the remaining powder off of the body.

5. Drink hot water
One of the simplest, most inexpensive, and effective ways to increase metabolism is to drink plain hot water. You can also spice it up by boiling the water for a few minutes with ginger, clove, cardamom, cinnamon and black pepper. Keep a hot flask of this water readily available in the kitchen or office. Clear green tea is also good but can cause excessive hunger when taken frequently.

Avoid the Flu This Fall

October 7, 2010 by admin

In general terms, the way to eradicate any and all illness and disease that you may have, prevent illness and disease from occurring in the future, and slowdown or potentially reverse the aging process is to do the following:

Eliminate the toxins that have built up in your system. You are loaded with toxins. You absolutely must get these toxins out of your body if you want to cure and prevent illness and disease. Getting the toxins out of your body can immediately increase energy, help you lose weight, eliminate depression and anxiety, and potentially reverse most illnesses and disease. The basic cleanses that you should do are: a) a colon cleanse; b) a liver cleanse; c) a gallbladder cleanse; d) a lung cleanse; e) a fat tissue cleanse; and f) a lymphatic cleanse.  This cleanse is a great starting point.

Clean up and repair the damaged energy field around and in your body.

Open up the energy channels in your body.

Stop, or at least reduce, the amount of toxins coming into your body. In today’s world it is impossible to totally eliminate putting toxins in your body, but we can dramatically reduce the amount of toxins that go into our system.

Stop, reduce or neutralize the negative electromagnetic energy attacking your energy field and body.

Put in your body an abundance of life-giving nutrients that you are deficient in.

Put in your body food that is full of life-force energy.

Eliminate trapped thought patterns that are charged with negative energy.

Use your thoughts to alkalize the body instead of acidifying the body.
