Curcumin, the bioactive compound found in the Indian curry spice turmeric and commonly referred to as ‘holy powder’, has been used for centuries in folk medicine to treat wounds, infections, and other health problems. Today researchers are using the power of the evolving science of epigenetics to reveal how curcumin is crucial in the fight against many forms of cancer, as it causes metastatic cells to undergo programmed cell death, or apoptosis.
Researchers from Michigan State University, publishing the result of a study in the Journal of Biological Chemistry have found that this amazing natural compound is able to prevent the destructive formation of alpha-synuclein proteins that are the hallmark presentation in many neurodegenerative disease such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease. Curcumin is one a very select group of structures that is able to cross the delicate blood-brain barrier to affect biochemical and electrical activities in the brain. The turmeric derivative has demonstrated the unique capability to prevent clumping or aggregation leading to disease development.

Vaccines For Everything: Researchers Now On Brink Of Developing Salmonella Jab

The vaccine industry is currently hard at work trying to churn out a vaccine for salmonella, a typically food borne pathogen that thrives on factory farms and in other unsanitary settings. CBS 13 News in Sacramento reports that researchers from the University of California, Davis, have been tasked with developing a vaccine that supposedly prevents salmonella, which these researchers say they are on the verge of completing in the very near future.
Rather than attempt to address the root causes of salmonella, which include filthy animal living conditions on industrial farms and the overuse of synthetic antibiotics in conventional livestock, just to name a few, mainstream science is busy concocting new ways to jab people with toxic chemical cocktails that could permanently injure them.
Funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health, Stephen McSorley and his team of international researchers believe that by closely studying the immune response to infection in mice, they will be able to arrive at a solid vaccine protocol for “curing” salmonella. And their findings thus far, which were recently published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, seem to indicate that the project is moving forward as planned.
Not surprisingly, Big Pharma is behind this ludicrous endeavor to develop a vaccine for an illness that is largely preventable through improved hygiene, small-scale agriculture, and naturally-boosted human immunity. Drug giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and the Novartis Vaccines Institute for Global Health are both collaborators on the project, which is expected to soon move into human clinical trials (http://www.foodsafetynews.com/2012/02/a-vaccine-against-salmonella/).
The development of this new salmonella vaccine appears to also align directly with the vision of a group of researchers in the U.K. who last summer called for the development of 20 new vaccines in the next decade. Their paper, which was published in the journal Lancet, seeks funding for the development of vaccines “beyond classic infections,” including for things like diabetes, degenerative diseases, and even cancer (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-13714224).
So by the looks of it, there could soon be vaccines for virtually everything — a headache, an upset stomach, a paper cut, you name it. Anything mainstream medicine can identify that is a consequence of a underlying condition rather than a cause of it is open game for vaccine development because there is a whole lot of money to be made utilizing this approach to so-called medicine.

High Doses of Vitamin D May Prevent Cancer

Researchers now say higher levels of vitamin D may be necessary to reduce one’s risk of cancer. Scientists at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha just published a new study in the journal Anticancer Research, noting that traditional intakes of the essential vitamin just aren’t enough to reach blood levels that can prevent or significantly decrease the risk of breast cancer and several other major diseases.
“We found that daily intakes of vitamin D by adults in the range of 4,000 to 8,000 IU [international units] are needed to maintain blood levels of vitamin D metabolites in the range needed to reduce by about half the risk of several diseases — breast cancer, colon cancer, multiple sclerosis and type 1 diabetes,” said Dr. Cedric Garland, professor of family and preventive medicine at the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center, in a press release. “I was surprised to find that the intakes required to maintain vitamin D status for disease prevention were so high — much higher than the minimal intake of vitamin D of 400 IU per day that was needed to defeat rickets in the 20th century.”
During the study, researchers surveyed several thousand volunteers who were taking vitamin D supplements with a dosage ranging from 1,000 to 10,000 IU per day. They found those taking the highest amounts of vitamin D were less likely to contract major diseases such as cancer.
Despite these findings, some doctors say just boosting your vitamin D levels aren’t enough for disease prevention and in some cases may be dangerous.
Dr. James Spencer, a dermatologist and American Academy of Dermatology board member, says the levels of vitamin D suggested in the study are way too high and that reducing the risk of cancer is not as easy as eating more oranges or taking more vitamin supplements. “Generally, when things are too good to be true, they usually are,” Spencer told AOL Health.
Dr. Sophie Balk, attending pediatrician at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore in New York City agrees. “We know that vitamin D is good for muscle health and osteoporosis — the research shows that,” Balk explained to AOL Health. “But the research isn’t conclusive about its effects on cancers. We really need more research about these other possible effects because we really can’t say for sure.”
Both doctors agree the dosage of 4,000 to 8,000 IU could be dangerous. “If you take that amount, over time it could be toxic,” warns Balk.
“Very high levels of vitamin D, usually above 10,000 [IUs] per day, are known to cause kidney and tissue damage,” adds Spencer.
To get sufficient amounts, but not too much vitamin D, Spencer recommends including salmon, milk, oranges or orange juice, egg yolk and mushrooms in your diet.
Although the sun and its UV rays are the best source of vitamin D, Spencer says there are other harmful results that can stem from too much sunshine, like skin cancer, and doesn’t recommend people seek vitamin D through sunbathing.
Balk recommends 400 IU per day of vitamin D for children and adolescents, while Spencer says the recommended dosage for adults is 600 IU per day and 800 IU per day for adults over 70 years old.

High Levels of Vitamin C In the Blood Can Reduce Diabetes Risk

Mega dosing with Vitamin C has proven to be beneficial in curing diseases and viruses – from the common cold to cancer. Many books by Linus Pauling and thousands of patient cases by Dr Levy, Dr Cathcart and Dr Klenner have proven Vitamin C to be miraculous in its ability to help the body heal. However, mainstream medicine does not recognize Vitamin C as even an adjunct to current practices.
Higher Vitamin C levels in the blood have been shown to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. A study from the American Medical Association Journal concluded that of 21,831 healthy individuals the top 20% with the highest Vitamin C plasma levels had a 62% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes. It is likely that the increased levels of Vitamin C in the blood indicated a healthier lifestyle due to the amount of fruits and vegetables needed to obtain the higher levels of Vitamin C.
Vitamin C also has other positive effects on the body. Other studies have shown increased blood flow and reduced inflammation, lower cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, improved cardiovascular health, reduced arthritic pain and many, many others. One 16 year Harvard study indicated supplementing with Vitamin C could save 300,000 lives annually.
62% is quite significant when considering Vitamin C is non-toxic and easily obtained from your daily diet. There are no known instances of death occurring from mega-dosing with Vitamin C. Vitamin C is also water-soluble. Its half life is approximately 30 minutes so it leaves the body rather quickly when not utilized by way of the kidneys. Supplementation and IV use can be discussed with a holistic practitioner or naturopath; however, adequate amounts can be obtained from diet alone. For instance, One cup of acerola cherries can have as much as 2000% of the RDA meaning 10 to 12 raw cherries could have as much as 1800mg of Vitamin C. One small kiwi contains over 115% of the RDA.
Many studies never utilize more than 2,000mg or 2 grams of Vitamin C. In this case the blood plasma levels were approximately 2 grams in the highest 20%. Eating a raw diet of fruits and vegetables will put most people at this amount or much higher, and supplementing with this non-toxic water soluble Vitamin can have nothing but beneficial results.

A new study out of Harvard Medical School has found that much of the white resin material used in dental fillings and sealants contains dangerous levels of bisphenol A (BPA). According to the analysis, enzymes in saliva can break down the tainted dental material and extract BPA from it, exposing children to unknown levels of the harmful chemical.
“The research that exists shows that upon contact with enzymes in the saliva…BPA derivatives break down to pure BPA,” explained Dr. Abby F. Fleisch, a pediatrician in the department of medicine at Children’s Hospital Boston and author of the study.
It is unclear from the study whether or not BPA continues to leach from dental work over the course of a person’s life, or only in the first few hours after the dental work has been completed. Researchers say that further analysis is necessary to test BPA absorption rates in relation to duration of exposure.
Most of the clear and white dental resins that have replaced the older mercury-laden metal compounds contain BPA. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has allegedly been encouraging the dental industry to phase out BPA from these newer dental products, but the agency has stopped short of banning it altogether. The FDA also continues to insist that low levels of exposure to BPA are harmless.
Recent research, however, suggests that even very low levels of BPA exposure can cause heart problems, sexual dysfunction, diabetes, cancer and other serious diseases. Studies show that BPA exposure is a serious health threat, especially in children.
But while denying that BPA exposure is problematic, the FDA has called on dental sealant and filling manufacturers to indicate BPA levels on products so dentists can choose those with less toxicity for use on children. The agency has also doled out roughly $30 million to fund BPA research.

Why I need you to donate to my legal defense fund…

A question some people ask is “Why does Kevin need us to donate to his legal defense fund if he is a millionaire and has lots of money?”
The real question should be, “Why do I have to pay tens of millions of dollars in my own money and go to jail, so YOU can have free access to information?” All of you have to understand is that I am fighting the government for YOU. They want ME in jail for sharing with YOU information about natural ways to cure and prevent disease.
Consider this…
I did not make one penny for any of the Weight Loss Cure books sold on TVsuo
I have not received one cent in salary from doing the radio show
I know this stuff. I do NOT need to do this radio show and I do NOT need to continue writing books. I do NOT need to risk going to jail by exposing government and corporate corruption. If YOU want me to continue to do this, why should I have to go to jail and why should I have to pay millions of my own money in legal fees so YOU can get this information? I make NO money doing this!
I am asking for donations to my legal defense fund for 2 reasons…
First, I need you to help fund the MILLIONS it is costing me to fight for the right of myself, all other authors and radio hosts to continue expressing their first amendment rights and sharing the information YOU need to know. Fighting the government has cost me MILLIONS in legal fees! If you are not willing to help, then I am not willing to continue the fight. I will simply stop writing books and stop this radio show. YOU will lose. You will lose your right to get information. Many other authors and radio hosts have already told me; if I lose, they will stop, as well, because they are scared. YOU will lose your right to get information from books, radio and in the internet. The free flow of information will stop. Why do you think I should pay millions and go to jail when I am fighting for YOUR rights? I do not need to do this. I could easily stop it all and go live the good life. I make NO money doing this!
Second, I am asking for donations to see how many people are willing to put their money where their mouth is. If there are not tens of thousands of people who are willing to say “YES Kevin we support you,” then why should I go to jail and continue to pay millions when you don’t even care? The choice is yours. You do not have to donate and I do not have to continue this radio show and writing books. I do not have to continue to spend MILLIONS each year for YOUR right to get this information.
I encourage you to donate to my legal defense fund and show your support. If you are upset that I am asking for $5 to show your support, then you do not deserve to get this information! Public television asks for donations, charities ask for donations, Politicians ask for donations and even the government asks you for money to help pay down the national debt. I am asking YOU to help me fight the government. It is YOUR responsibility to help. It is NOT my job to spend all my money and go to jail just so YOU can get this information. I WILL fight for YOU! I WILL risk going to jail for YOU! But only if YOU show your support. If you have any issues with me asking for your support then answer this question; why should I spend millions for YOU to get this information when I get no money out of this? Think about it.
Donate now and show your support. Any amount will help…$5…$10…$25…any amount! If you donate $70 or more I will send you all 3 of my hardcover books absolutely FREE…and if you donate $1000 or more Janine will call you and invite you to a personal dinner with me and the other large donors. Please show your supportand donate today.
I know EVERY one of you can donate $5! So, there is absolutely NO EXCUSE! The government is trying to throw me in jail right now! Would YOU be willing to go to jail just so you could help other people? Think hard about this. The future of America is at stake. Show your support now before it’s too late.

Antibody Can Destroy 91% of HIV Strains

HIV research is undergoing a renaissance that could lead to new ways to develop vaccines against the AIDS virus and other viral diseases.
In the latest development, U.S. government scientists say they have discovered three powerful antibodies, the strongest of which neutralizes 91% of HIV strains, more than any AIDS antibody yet discovered. They are now deploying the technique used to find those antibodies to identify antibodies to influenza viruses.
The HIV antibodies were discovered in the cells of a 60-year-old African-American gay man, known in the scientific literature as Donor 45, whose body made the antibodies naturally. The trick for scientists now is to develop a vaccine or other methods to make anyone’s body produce them as well.
That effort “will require work,” said Gary Nabel, director of the Vaccine Research Center at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who was a leader of the research. “We’re going to be at this for a while” before any benefit is seen in the clinic, he said.
The research was published Thursday in two papers in the online edition of the journal Science, 10 days before the opening of a large International AIDS Conference in Vienna, where prevention science is expected to take center stage. More than 33 million people were living with HIV at the end of 2008, and about 2.7 million contracted the virus that year, according to United Nations estimates.
Vaccines, which are believed to work by activating the body’s ability to produce antibodies, eliminated or curtailed smallpox, polio and other feared viral diseases, so they have been the holy grail of AIDS research.
Last year, following a trial in Thailand, results of the first HIV vaccine to show any efficacy were announced. But that vaccine reduced the chances of infection only by about 30%, and controversy erupted because in one common analysis the results weren’t statistically significant. That vaccine wasn’t designed to elicit the new antibodies.
The new discovery is part of what Wayne Koff, head of research and development at the nonprofit International AIDS Vaccine Initiative, calls a “renaissance” in HIV vaccine research.
Antibodies that are utterly ineffective, or that disable just one or two HIV strains, are common. Until last year, only a handful of “broadly neutralizing antibodies,” those that efficiently disable a large swath of HIV strains, had been discovered. And none of them neutralized more than about 40% of known HIV variants.
But in the past year, thanks to efficient new detection methods, at least a half dozen broadly neutralizing antibodies, including the three latest ones, have been identified in peer-reviewed journals. Dennis Burton of the Scripps Institute in La Jolla, Calif., led a team that discovered two broadly neutralizing antibodies last year; he says his team has identified additional, unpublished ones. Most of the new antibodies are more potent, able to knock out HIV at far lower concentrations than their previously known counterparts.
HIV is a highly mutable virus, but one place where the virus doesn’t mutate much is where it attaches to a particular molecule on the surface of cells it infects. Building on previous research, researchers created a probe, shaped exactly like that critical site, and used it to attract only those antibodies that efficiently attack it. That is how they fished out of Donor 45 the special antibodies: They screened 25 million of his cells to find 12 that produced the antibodies.
Donor 45′s antibodies didn’t protect him from contracting HIV. That is likely because the virus had already taken hold before his body produced the antibodies. He is still alive, and when his blood was drawn, he had been living with HIV for 20 years.
While he has produced the most powerful HIV antibody yet discovered, researchers say they don’t know of anything special about his genes that would make him unique. They expect that most people would be capable of producing the antibodies, if scientists could find the right way to stimulate their production.
Dr. Nabel said his team is applying the new technique to the influenza virus. Like HIV, influenza is a highly mutable virus—the reason a new vaccine is required every year.
“We want to go after a universal vaccine” by using the new technique to find antibodies to a “component of the influenza virus that doesn’t change,” said NIAID director Anthony Fauci. In principle, Dr. Fauci said, the technique could be used for any viral disease and possibly even for cancer vaccines.
Some of the new HIV antibodies discovered over the past year attack different points on the virus, raising hopes that they could work synergistically.
In unpublished research, John Mascola, deputy director of the Vaccine Research Center, has shown that one of Dr. Burton’s antibodies neutralizes virtually all the strains that are resistant to the antibody from Donor 45. He also found the reverse: The antibody from Donor 45 disables HIV strains resistant to one of Dr. Burton’s best antibodies. Only one strain out of 95 tested was resistant to both antibodies, he said. Dr. Mascola is one of the authors of Thursday’s papers.
Researchers say they plan to test the new antibodies, likely blended together in a potent cocktail, in three broad ways.
First, the antibodies could be given to people in their raw form, somewhat like a drug, to prevent transmission of the virus. But they would likely be expensive and last in the body for a limited time, perhaps weeks, making that method impractical for all but specialized cases, such as to prevent mother-to-child transmission in childbirth.
The antibodies could also be tested in a “microbicide,” a gel that women or gay men could apply before sex to prevent infection.
The antibodies might even be tried as a treatment for people already infected. While the antibodies are unlikely to completely suppress HIV on their own, say scientists, they might boost the efficacy of current antiretroviral drugs.
Dr. Nabel said that the Vaccine Research Center has contracted with a company to produce an antibody suitable for use in humans so that testing in people could begin.
A second way to use the new research is to stimulate the immune system to produce the antibodies. Jonas Salk injected people with a whole killed polio virus, and virtually everyone’s immune system easily made antibodies that disabled the polio virus. But for HIV, the vast majority of antibodies are ineffective. Now, scientists know the exact antibodies that must be made—those found in Donor 45 and in Dr. Burton’s lab, for example. So researchers need “a reverse engineering technology” to find a way to get everyone to produce them, said Greg Poland, director of vaccine research at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
That’s what scientists at Merck & Co. have done. In a study published this year in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the Merck Scientists knew that an old antibody, weaker than the newly discovered ones, attaches to a particularly vulnerable part of HIV. They created a replica of that piece of the virus to train the immune system to produce antibodies aimed at that exact spot. It was a painstaking process, requiring researchers to add chemical bonds to stabilize the replica so that it wouldn’t collapse and lose its shape. Eventually, Merck was able to make experimental vaccine candidates capable of spurring guinea pigs and rabbits to produce antibodies that home in on the target site and neutralize HIV. Those vaccines weren’t nearly powerful enough, but, said Dr. Koff, Merck’s research provides a “proof of principle” that reverse engineering can work for the much stronger new antibodies.
There are other potential pitfalls. There is evidence that Donor 45′s cells took months or possibly even years to create the powerful antibodies. That means scientists might have to give repeated booster shots or devise other ways to speed up this process.
Finally, there are experimental methods that employ tactics such as gene therapy. Nobel laureate David Baltimore is working on one such approach.
His team at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, Calif., has stitched genes that code for antibodies into a harmless virus, which they then inject into mice. The virus infects mouse cells, turning them into factories that produce the antibodies.

Free condoms should also be available to young people in schools and youth clubs, according to the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice), which wants all young people to have access to confidential contraceptive advice.
The organisation argues that easier access to contraception will help reduce unwanted pregnancies. But campaigners warned that it risked fuelling promiscuity among young people.
The advice is the first time that Nice has called for young people to have access to emergency contraception to keep at home.
Pharmacies in particular should be targeted as places where the under-25s can get the morning-after pill in advance, it recommends.
It also advises that teenagers get free condoms, in a range of types and sizes, and that they should be shown how to use them.
Youngsters should also be encouraged to carry condoms around with them, and use them every time they have sex, to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted diseases.

Drinking two fewer glasses of soft drinks could reduce the risk of dying of a stroke by eight per cent and coronary heart disease by five per cent, an American study revealed.
Drinks laced with sugars has long been linked to a greater risk of obesity and diabetes but the effect of the sweet beverages on blood pressure had been uncertain. “Our findings suggest that reducing sugar-sweetened beverages and sugar consumption may be an important dietary strategy to lower blood pressure and further reduce other blood pressure-related diseases,
“It has been estimated that a 3-millimetres of mercury (mm Hg) reduction in systolic blood pressure should reduce stroke mortality by 8 percent and coronary heart disease mortality by 5 percent.
“Such reductions in systolic blood pressure would be anticipated by reducing sugar-sweetened beverages consumption by an average of 2 servings per day.”
Researchers sampled 810 adults aged between 25 and 79 with a prehypertension of between 120/80 and 139/89 mm Hg and stage I hypertension of between 140/90 and 159/99 mm Hg.

Michelle Obama Claims Obesity is a Threat to National Security

At a ceremony at the White House on Tuesday, First Lady Michelle Obama announced the launch of the ‘Let’s Move’ campaign to end childhood obesity in the United States, an epidemic she said is costly and a threat to national security.
“A recent study put the health care cost of obesity-related diseases at $147 billion a year,” Mrs. Obama said. “This epidemic also impacts the nation’s security, as obesity is now one of the most common disqualifiers for military service.”
The ceremony, attended by many officials of President Barack Obama’s cabinet, followed the signing earlier in the day of a presidential memorandum establishing a task force to study the problem and make recommendations after 90 days.
Obama announced a long list of goals she said she hopes the “Let’s Move” campaign will accomplish, including many that can be done “in a generation.”
“This isn’t like a disease where we’re still waiting for a cure to be discovered – we know the cure for this,” Obama said. “This isn’t like putting a man on the moon or inventing the Internet. It doesn’t take some stroke of genius or feat of technology.
“We have everything we need, right now, to help our kids lead healthy lives,” Obama said.
Some of the goals include ending what Obama referred to as “food deserts” with a $400 million a year “Healthy Food Financing Initiative,” which will bring grocery stores to low-income neighborhoods and “help places like convenience stores carry healthier food options.”
Obama called for overhauling many federal laws and guidelines, including adding $10 billion over the next decade to “update” the Childhood Nutrition Act, which feeds 31 million children at school and would add funding to feed more children.
The federal food pyramid would also get a makeover through the campaign, and there would be new efforts to get manufacturers to add “family friendly front-of-package labeling” that discloses a product’s nutritional value.
The First Lady said a broad coalition of groups interested in children’s health are coming together to form the Partnership for a Healthier America, which will use professional athletes, members of the media, and state and local dignitaries to promote the “Let’s Move” campaign and its goals around the country.
Obama used anecdotal details from her own life to explain the challenges faced by overworked parents and children who spend too much time watching TV or playing video games because their neighborhoods are unsafe for playing outside.
“So many parents desperately want to do the right thing, but they feel like the deck is stacked against them,” Obama said. “They know their kids’ health is their responsibility but they feel like it’s out of their control.”
“They are bombarded by contradictory information at every turn, and they don’t know who to believe,” she said.
