Monsanto Contracted Blackwater Spies to Infiltrate Opposition

Over the past several years, entities closely linked to the private security firm Blackwater have provided intelligence, training and security services to US and foreign governments as well as several multinational corporations, including Monsanto, Chevron, the Walt Disney Company, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and banking giants Deutsche Bank and Barclays, according to documents obtained by The Nation. Blackwater’s work for corporations and government agencies was contracted using two companies owned by Blackwater’s owner and founder, Erik Prince: Total Intelligence Solutions and the Terrorism Research Center (TRC). Prince is listed as the chairman of both companies in internal company documents, which show how the web of companies functions as a highly coordinated operation. Officials from Total Intelligence, TRC and Blackwater (which now calls itself Xe Services) did not respond to numerous requests for comment for this article.

One of the most incendiary details in the documents is that Blackwater, through Total Intelligence, sought to become the “intel arm” of Monsanto, offering to provide operatives to infiltrate activist groups organizing against the multinational biotech firm.

Governmental recipients of intelligence services and counterterrorism training from Prince’s companies include the Kingdom of Jordan, the Canadian military and the Netherlands police, as well as several US military bases, including Fort Bragg, home of the elite Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), and Fort Huachuca, where military interrogators are trained, according to the documents. In addition, Blackwater worked through the companies for the Defense Intelligence Agency, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency and the US European Command.

On September 3 the New York Times reported that Blackwater had “created a web of more than 30 shell companies or subsidiaries in part to obtain millions of dollars in American government contracts after the security company came under intense criticism for reckless conduct in Iraq.” The documents obtained by The Nation reveal previously unreported details of several such companies and open a rare window into the sensitive intelligence and security operations Blackwater performs for a range of powerful corporations and government agencies. The new evidence also sheds light on the key roles of several former top CIA officials who went on to work for Blackwater.

The coordinator of Blackwater’s covert CIA business, former CIA paramilitary officer Enrique “Ric” Prado, set up a global network of foreign operatives, offering their “deniability” as a “big plus” for potential Blackwater customers, according to company documents. The CIA has long used proxy forces to carry out extralegal actions or to shield US government involvement in unsavory operations from scrutiny. In some cases, these “deniable” foreign forces don’t even know who they are working for. Prado and Prince built up a network of such foreigners while Blackwater was at the center of the CIA’s assassination program, beginning in 2004. They trained special missions units at one of Prince’s properties in Virginia with the intent of hunting terrorism suspects globally, often working with foreign operatives. A former senior CIA official said the benefit of using Blackwater’s foreign operatives in CIA operations was that “you wouldn’t want to have American fingerprints on it.”

While the network was originally established for use in CIA operations, documents show that Prado viewed it as potentially valuable to other government agencies. In an e-mail in October 2007 with the subject line “Possible Opportunity in DEA—Read and Delete,” Prado wrote to a Total Intelligence executive with a pitch for the Drug Enforcement Administration. That executive was an eighteen-year DEA veteran with extensive government connections who had recently joined the firm. Prado explained that Blackwater had developed “a rapidly growing, worldwide network of folks that can do everything from surveillance to ground truth to disruption operations.” He added, “These are all foreign nationals (except for a few cases where US persons are the conduit but no longer ‘play’ on the street), so deniability is built in and should be a big plus.”

The executive wrote back and suggested there “may be an interest” in those services. The executive suggested that “one of the best places to start may be the Special Operations Division, (SOD) which is located in Chantilly, VA,” telling Prado the name of the special agent in charge. The SOD is a secretive joint command within the Justice Department, run by the DEA. It serves as the command-and-control center for some of the most sensitive counternarcotics and law enforcement operations conducted by federal forces. The executive also told Prado that US attachés in Mexico; Bogotá, Colombia; and Bangkok, Thailand, would potentially be interested in Prado’s network. Whether this network was activated, and for what customers, cannot be confirmed. A former Blackwater employee who worked on the company’s CIA program declined to comment on Prado’s work for the company, citing its classified status.

Dow Falls Below 10,000 As Worries Escalate

CNBC

Stocks were lower for a fifth straight day Wednesday amid worries about the economic recovery but pared losses amid gains in homebuilders, tech and some consumer names.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down about 20 points, reclaiming 10,000. Earlier, the blue-chip index had fallen below that level. This came after a four-day losing streak in which the Dow lost a total of 3.6 percent.

Caterpillar [CAT  64.10  -0.94  (-1.45%)   ], Disney and Bank of America led the index laggards while Home Depot and McDonald’s were among the gainers.

The CBOE volatility index, widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, was above 27.

Disney[DIS  31.66  -0.48  (-1.49%)   ] shares fell 1 percent following news that the company is in talks with Apple [AAPL  239.10  -0.83  (-0.35%)   ] about renting TV shows to viewers for 99 cents each through iTunes.

Dell [DELL  11.746  0.161  (+1.39%)   ] shares rose following news that Hewlett-Packard [HPQ  38.4106  0.0206  (+0.05%)   ] has begun talks with 3Par. HP is offering $24 a share for the data-storage company, which trumps Dell’s $18-a-share offer by a wide margin. There has been some speculation that Dell might raise its offer.

Internet stocks are among the few bright spots on the board today, with Google and eBay both higher. Wireless stocks are also higher, with Motorola, Leap and Qualcomm all higher.

In other merger news, Rio Tinto [RTP  47.90  -0.03  (-0.06%)   ] is apparently not planning a bid for Potash [POT  145.6025  -3.5075  (-2.35%)   ]. The Canadian fertilizer maker is said to be seeking alternative offers to the $130-a-share offer from BHP Billiton [BHP  64.93  -0.49  (-0.75%)   ]. For its part, BHP slapped down speculation, that it would make a higher bid.

On the economic front, new-home sales dropped 12.4 percent to a 276,000 annual rate in July after a 12.1-percent increase in June.

This followed a dismal housing report on Tuesday that showed existing-home sales fell 27.2 percent last month to their lowest pace in 15 years.

Investors were piling into homebuilder stocks, with many up 2 and 3 percent, following several research notes yesterday, including one from Citigroup, that now may be the time to get in on housing stocks. KBHome [KBH  10.35  0.31  (+3.09%)   ] and Toll Brothers [TOL  16.89  0.70  (+4.32%)   ] were both up about 4 percent. Earlier, Toll Brothers reported it swung to a profit, helped by tax benefits.

American Eagle shares [AEO  13.36  0.87  (+6.97%)   ] jumped more than 6 percent even after the teen retailer reported lower earnings as high inventories fueled discounting.

A few consumer names were also higher, including Home Depot [HD  28.05  0.27  (+0.97%)   ], Starbucks [SBUX  23.11  0.29  (+1.27%)   ] and JCPenney [JCP  20.44  -0.13  (-0.63%)   ].

And in the morning’s other economic news, orders for durable goods, big-ticket items like refrigerators and cars, rose 0.3 percent but fell well short of the 2.8-percent increase expected. Excluding transportation, orders fell 3.8 percent.

Talk of a double-dip recession has accelerated in recent weeks, with Gluskin Sheff economist David Rosenberg going so far as to say this is a depression, not a recession.

But several market pros in the past few days have offered a counterpoint, saying they don’t think the signs of worsening are there.

“We’ve got a very soft economy—it’s a constant disappointment, but we don’t think we’re going to have a double-dip because the most cyclical sectors of the economy are already in the basement,” David Kelly, chief market strategist at JPMorgan Funds, said on CNBC.

Strategist David Kass, founder and president of Seabreeze partners, agrees.

“I just can’t be that negative right now,” Kass said. “If you look at cyclical areas of the economy … It’s hard for me to expect material economic weakness in the second half of this year and into 2011,” said Kass, founder and president of Seabreeze Partners.

Meanwhile, central bankers, economists and other officials from around the world headed to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, to assess the economic outlook at the Federal Reserve’s annual retreat.

Crude oil fell toward $71 a barrel after a report showed a 4.1-million barrel jump in crude supplies, more than double of what was expected. Retail gasoline prices are also falling heading into the Labor Day holiday, with the national average around $2.70 a gallon.

Gold rose to an eight-week high above $1,240 an ounce as the dollar fell against the euro and economic concerns fueled interest in the metal as a safe haven. Gold miners including Barrick Gold [ABX  45.00  1.22  (+2.79%)   ] and Newmont Mining [NEM  58.37  1.25  (+2.19%)   ] rose more than 2 percent.

FedEx [FDX  78.03  -1.06  (-1.34%)   ] shares dropped about 2 percent following news that the package-delivery giant is suing New York attorney general Andrew Cuomo, seeking to stop an investigation of the company. The company said Cuomo has exceeded his authority in seeking information on rates, routes, and price information.

Pediatritian Molests Children, Medical Board Does Nothing

Natural News

By David Gutierrez

(NaturalNews) A Delaware pediatrician recently arrested and charged with molesting more than 100 children was the subject of complaints and investigations almost 10 years ago, but the state medical board never took action against him.

“The system failed. What I don’t know, and what we must find out, is where and how,” said Gov. Jack Markell.

Earl Bradley was recently arrested after a two-year-old girl told her mother that the doctor had taken her into a basement room after her medical exam and hurt her. Police have since charged him with more than 30 felonies. Prosecutors say that for almost a decade, he raped and otherwise assaulted children in the basement and exam rooms, some of them decorated with Disney themes. In some cases, they say, he videotaped the attacks.

Parents Better than TV at Teaching Babies to Speak

Parents who buy educational DVDs to give their toddlers a head start may be doing more harm than good.

A study of almost 100 boys and girls aged between one and two found that regularly watching a DVD from the Baby Einstein range did nothing to boost their vocabulary.

In fact, the younger the children were when they began to watch the programmes, the worse their word power.

Researchers tested the children over six weeks. Half were given a Baby Wordsworth DVD, which their parents were told to play 15 times over six weeks.

The 35-minute disc, costing around £18, is part of the Baby Einstein range – popular with parents keen to boost toddlers’ IQs before starting school.

It uses puppets and people to introduce 30 words for rooms and household appliances, including ‘fridge’ and ‘phone’.

The remaining children’s parents were told to ‘go about life as normal’.

Not surprisingly, older children picked up more new words than younger ones, the California University team found.

However, those who watched the DVD did no better than the others, and in fact appeared to learn little or nothing, their parents told Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, an American journal.

Researchers also asked parents if they had used the DVDs before and found the younger a child was on starting to watch Baby Einstein, the worse their word ability was.

This may be because parents are more likely to use them as aids if children are struggling to learn to speak, said researcher Rebekah Richert.

It is also possible that watching TV means youngsters miss out on playing with their parents, other children and toys. In addition, some experts say the flashing lights and quick scene changes in the Baby Einstein programmes over-simulate the developing brain.

Dr Richert said: ‘Given that infantdirected media are nearly ubiquitous aspects of many infants’ lives, research should continue to examine whether and how parents can use the DVDs effectively.’

Last night, no one at Disney was available for comment.

The Baby Einstein DVDs avoid any suggestion they will make children brainier, and merely claim the series is a must for parents who simply want the best for their children.

‘Our products provide fun and stimulating ways for parents and carers to interact with their children,’ the blurb on the DVD says.

A previous study found children between seven and 16 months who watched the DVDs knew fewer words than their peers. Each hour they watched per day equated to six fewer words in their vocabulary.

Following threatened legal action last year, Disney offered refunds to dissatisfied parents – but only in North America.
