Traveling This Holiday Season? Here Are Some Survival Tips!
December 19, 2012 by admin
Well, the holiday season is here and you know what that means… travel. If you’re traveling a lot this holiday season to see family, friends or just to relax, you need to take the extra precautions to keep yourself from getting sick.
Here are my suggestions to protect yourself before and after your trip:
Ginger
Ginger calms nerves, relieves nausea due to motion sickness, is an overall digestive soother, and acts as a gentle decongestant to ease sinus irritation.
Drink Water
Carry at least 2 bottles of pure filtered water to through your flight. Drinking supports the next important tip.
Move Around
Drinking will make it so you must get out of your seat to use the bathroom, hopefully at least every half hour. Each bathroom trip, stand and stretch, raise up your arms, wiggle your feet, jump up and down. The jumping helps to compensate for the absence of muscular activity in the calves from sitting for extended periods, which severely slows lower limb circulation.
Mist
Carry a small spray bottle to mist your face while flying. Misting hydrates the skin, and helps keep nasal passages moistened.
Supplement
Double up on your daily doses of vitamin C, zinc, antioxidants, green foods such as chlorella and spirulina, whole food multiple vitamins and vitamin E.
Food
Bring food, such as fresh fruit, raw nuts and seeds, organic food bars or a sandwich made on whole grain bread. Make sure to bring enough food to keep you from eating the salty, fatty, roasted peanuts and cheap preservative-filled pretzels served on flights these days!
Do not drink alcohol
It will dehydrate you, dull your senses, keep you from drinking enough water, as well as leave you prone to infection due to the immune-lowering effects of alcohol.
Most Important: Rest!
Travel well rested. This commonly overlooked aspect of healthy travel sets the stage for a stress cycle that can last your entire trip. Hard as it is to get out the door, be sure to sleep well before you travel.
Happy Holidays!

White House Admits Censoring News On The Obama Family

“If the Obama administration is censoring news on the first family, what else are they censoring?” –KTRN
President Obama had no problem sending his 13-year-old daughter on Spring Break to Mexico, notoriously known for teenagers partying and getting wasted on time away from school. The problem he had though was with the media reporting it.
On Monday reports by The Huffington Post, Yahoo, and the International Business Times, to name a few, were asked to nix their publications of Obama’s daughter’s school trip to the drug cartel infested country.
Malia and twelve classmates, who were accompanied by 25 Secret Service agents, set-off to Oaxaca, Mexico this past Saturday.
The White House has confirmed the First Family has requested news organization to remove stories of Malia Obama’s escapades south of the border.
In an email directed to Dylan Byers of Politico.com, Kristina Schake, Communications Director to the First Lady, said “from the beginning of the administration, the White House has asked news outlets not to report on or photograph the Obama children when they are not with their parents and there is no vital news interest. We have reminded outlets of this request in order to protect the privacy and security of these girls.”
Regardless of the effort to suppress the story, it seems one site has been able to escape the jaws of censorship.
The Gazette, a Montreal based publication is allegedly the only site still standing reporting on the sightseeing trip.
Now of course this has some Obama critics talking about the recent excursion.
On Tuesday, Rick Santorum responded to the news on Glenn Beck’s program and according to Santorum, the president should be “leading by example.”

12 Preparedness Tips for Families with Children

“Is you’re getting prepared for what is to come, here is a great article on some ideas of how to prepare with children.” –KTRN
Something I have not given much thought to is how to deal with survival and preparedness matters when there are young children in the household. Perhaps it was watching the children on Doomsday Preppers that set me on this path, or perhaps it was just something I started thinking about on my own.
Whatever the reason, I have always treated young children as mini-adults, able to rationalize and understand and feel the emotions and body language of the adults around them. And I love kids. Even though I don’t have any of my own, I recognize and love that they are fresh and unspoiled by life and its failures. For no other reason, I wish to share my thoughts on preparedness for families with little ones under the roof.
A Dozen Preparedness Tips for Families
1. Include children in family preparedness discussions. Explain what you are talking about in a calm, assured manner and answer questions honestly and simply. Focus the conversation on the safety issues that will ensure their survival.
2. Regardless of their age, teach young children to memorize their basic personal information such as full name, address, telephone number, and the names of their parents or guardians. This will be invaluable in the event they become separated from their family following a disaster.
3. Learn the disaster response policies of you child’s school or daycare center. Be sure to establish a backup plan so that someone is available to pick them up and/or care for them if you are unable to do so. A good idea would be to have the backup person check on them, regardless, just to be sure. (After all, you may be hurt and unable to call the backup person yourself.)

Should Parents Lose Obese Kids?
July 14, 2011 by admin

ABC News
By: Dan Harris
Harvard University child obesity expert Dr. David Ludwig’s recent claim that some parents should lose custody of their severely obese children has sparked outrage among families and professionals across the country.
The national outcry led one family to share how its personal experience with the matter damaged their lives.
Ludwig, an obesity expert at Children’s Hospital Boston and associate professor at the Harvard School of Public Health, shared his divisive idea in an opinion piece that ran in the Journal of the American Medical Association Wednesday: that state intervention can serve in the best interest of extremely obese children, of which there’re about 2 million across the United States.
“In severe instances of childhood obesity, removal from the home may be justifiable, from a legal standpoint, because of imminent health risks and the parents’ chronic failure to address medical problems,” Ludwig co-wrote with Lindsey Murtagh, a lawyer and researcher at Harvard’s School of Public Health.
The topic has quickly generated controversy, and the majority of experts contacted by ABC News disagreed with Ludwig and Murtagh’s ideas.
Dr. David Katz, founder of the Yale Prevention Center, said that there was no evidence that the state would do a better job of feeding children than their parents.
Dr. David Orentlicher, co-director of Hall Center for Law and Health at Indiana University of School Law, also disagreed, saying that based on past instances, child protective service agencies might be far too quick to place overweight children in foster care.
A family in Albuquerque, N.M., disagreed with the idea, based not on any medical expertise but on a painful personal experience that they say tore the family apart more than a decade ago.
In a case that shocked many people across the country, 3-year-old Anamarie Regino, weighing 90 pounds, was taken from her outraged parents by government officials and placed in foster care.
“Literally, it was two months of hell. It seemed like the longest two months of my life,” mother Adela Martinez said.
As it turned out, it was two unnecessary months of hell. Anamarie didn’t improve at all in foster care, and she was returned to her parents. The young girl was later diagnosed with a genetic predisposition.
“They say it’s for the well-being of the child, but it did more damage that any money or therapy could ever to do to fix it,” Martinez said.
Anamarie, who is now 14, agreed.
“It’s not right, what [Dr. Ludwig] is doing, because to get better you need to be with your family, instead of being surrounded by doctors,” she said.
When told of the Regino case, Ludwig said his solution of state intervention did not always work.
“Well, state intervention is no guarantee of a good outcome, but to do nothing is also not an answer,” Ludwif said.
Ludwig said he believes that children should only be removed in the most extreme cases, and that state officials should first offer counseling and education to parents.
“It should only be used as a last resort,” he said. “It’s also no guarantee of success, but when we have a 400-pound child with life threatening complications, there may not be any great choices.”

CIA Organized Fake Vaccination Drive To Get bin Laden’s Family DNA
July 12, 2011 by admin

Guardian
By Saeed Shah
The CIA organised a fake vaccination programme in the town where it believed Osama bin Laden was hiding in an elaborate attempt to obtain DNA from the fugitive al-Qaida leader’s family, a Guardian investigation has found.
As part of extensive preparations for the raid that killed Bin Laden in May, CIA agents recruited a senior Pakistani doctor to organise the vaccine drive in Abbottabad, even starting the “project” in a poorer part of town to make it look more authentic, according to Pakistani and US officials and local residents.
The doctor, Shakil Afridi, has since been arrested by the Inter-Services Intelligence agency (ISI) for co-operating with American intelligence agents.
Relations between Washington and Islamabad, already severely strained by the Bin Laden operation, have deteriorated considerably since then. The doctor’s arrest has exacerbated these tensions. The US is understood to be concerned for the doctor’s safety, and is thought to have intervened on his behalf.
The vaccination plan was conceived after American intelligence officers tracked an al-Qaida courier, known as Abu Ahmad al-Kuwaiti, to what turned out to be Bin Laden’s Abbottabad compound last summer. The agency monitored the compound by satellite and surveillance from a local CIA safe house in Abbottabad, but wanted confirmation that Bin Laden was there before mounting a risky operation inside another country.
DNA from any of the Bin Laden children in the compound could be compared with a sample from his sister, who died in Boston in 2010, to provide evidence that the family was present.
