Another Cop Flips Out

“Here we go again. Another cop goes berserk over two guys filming shopping carts outside of a WalMart. They were doing nothing wrong and the cop almost tazes the men. Talk about a police state.” –KTRN
In the United States there is a marked and quite disturbing trend of law-abiding Americans being arrested, beaten or harassed by police simply for exercising their legal right to film a police officer in the course of their public duties.
Thankfully, as of late there has been some justice in the ruling of an Illinois judge who found their wiretapping legislation unconstitutional as well as a relatively small-scale victory in the case of Steve Horrigan.
Unfortunately, yet another example of this trend has emerged in a video posted on March 30, 2012, which you can see below (note: there is explicit language in the video).

Girl Kills Self After Being Bullied Over Rape Allegations

A 14-year-old girl who was taunted by classmates after she accused an older student of rape has committed suicide, Detroit media reported.
Samantha Kelly, a freshman at Huron High School, hanged herself Monday in her family’s mobile home in Huron Township, Mich., according to reports in the Detroit News and Detroit Free Press.
Other students had harassed her and called her a liar after they learned that she was the accuser in the case against Joseph Tarnopolski, 18, a senior at the school.
“They all took sides,” Sheila Little, a 17-year-old senior, told the Detroit news. “Her friends left her because they said she was lying. It’s obvious this pressure had a real impact on her.”
Tarnopolski was arrested last month and charged with third-degree criminal assault. After he was released on bond on Oct. 12, he returned to Huron High School.
On Twitter, Tarnopolski had blamed “liars” for his treatment.
“All girls are, are liars and backstabbers! I hate you all. Way to ruin my life. Seriously, now this will be on my record for life!” he tweeted on Sept. 28, according to the News.
A judge in Romulus today dismissed the charge against Tarnopolski. The Wayne County prosecutor’s office said it could not proceed without Kelly.
“Without the victim. we’re unable to go forward with the case,” said Maria Miller, a spokeswoman for prosecutor Kym Worthy.
Miller said prosecutors did not know Kelly was being harassed until after a local TV broadcast ran an interview that identified the girl’s mother.
“Although the child’s face was not seen, when the mother was interviewed, essentially the child’s identity was revealed,” Miller told the News. “After the broadcast, it is our understanding that the child was harassed at school.”
After today’s hearing, Tarnopolski told WJBK, the local Fox station, he was sorry to hear of Kelly’s death. “I’m sad it happened, but there’s not much I can do,” he said.
The girl’s mother, June Justice, screamed obscenities at Tarnopolski as he left the courthouse, according to WXYZ, the ABC station in Detroit.
“My daughter did not get any justice before this and she did not ain’t getting justice now,” she said.

Debt Collectors Utilize Facebook to Embarrass Those Who Owe

Debt collectors can be relentless and downright rude on the phone, but now a St. Petersburg woman is filing suit alleging the company that financed her car loan began harassing family members over the social networking website Facebook.
Melanie Beacham says she fell behind on her car payment after getting sick and taking a medical leave from work. She contacted MarkOne Financial to explain the situation but says the harassing phone calls, as many as 20 per day, kept coming. Then one day she got a call from her sister saying the company contacted her in Georgia.
“I was telling her, ‘No way, because you’re not even a reference,’” said Beacham, who later found out MarkOne contacted her sister and other relatives via Facebook.
Beacham says the company claimed they were doing nothing wrong but, upset over what happened, she contacted Tampa based consumer attorney Billy Howard of Morgan & Morgan.
“Now Facebook does a debt collectors work for them. Now it’s not only family members, it’s all of your associates. It’s a very powerful tool for debt collectors to use,” says Howard.
He believes Facebook will soon become a regular method for contact if nothing is done.
“It’s getting the desired result, and that is to start a domino effect of panic and embarrassment among family and friends, and people will do anything to stop that.”
Howard has now filed a first of its kind lawsuit against MarkOne asking a judge to ban the company from using Facebook and other social networking websites to contact friends and family members over a debt.
10 News was unable to reach MarkOne Financial for comment Monday regarding the suit filed in Pinellas County.
Beacham hopes the lawsuit will keep debt collectors from exploiting consumers on Facebook.
“Nobody should have to go through what I went through,” said Beacham. “I was hurt because I just felt I didn’t need my family going through that.”
