Babies Testing for BPAs in the Womb

For the first time in the history of its testing, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) has found bisphenol A (BPA) in the umbilical cord blood of American babies. Nine out of ten samples tested positive for the chemical, a shocking number when considering the laundry list of chronic illnesses that are associated with BPA exposure.
Used in the production of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins, BPA has come under increasing scrutiny over the past several years for its role in contributing to the development of cancer, endocrine damage, reproductive problems, and neurological dysfunction. Many plastics manufacturers have begun removing the additive from their products, despite continued reassurances by the FDA that the chemical is safe.
Studies continue to show that BPA is dangerous, even at minimal levels, and that it should not be used in consumer products. Several groups, including the Endocrine Society and the American Medical Association (AMA), have expressed opposition to the use of BPA. Scientists are finding that low-dose exposure, especially during early developmental years, can actually cause more endocrine and reproductive problems than larger-dose exposure due to the way the body recognizes the chemical.
Not only was BPA found in babies, but 231 other chemicals were detected as well, indicating that human beings are exposed to more toxic chemicals than ever. Experts fear that such an onslaught of toxicity may cause permanent damage to the next generation of Americans.
Public outcry over the FDA’s continued approval of BPA despite numerous studies revealing its dangers has led the agency to express that it will reevaluate its position. The agency was supposed to issue an updated review about BPA safety on November 30 but it never actually followed through. The FDA most recently claimed that the report will be made available before the end of the year.
Experts and analysts believe the food industry is behind the push to keep BPA legal, exerting influence on the FDA to conceal the truth about its dangers. Many manufacturers have voluntarily been able to eliminate BPA from their products, illustrating that there is no reason why it should continue to be used by anyone.
The AMA, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists have all endorsed a resolution that calls on Congress to minimize or eliminate the use of BPA in consumer products. The EWG hopes that top priority will be given to the issue in light of the group’s recent discovery.

Swine Flu Activity Declines for 4th Week
December 2, 2009
Bloomberg
By Meg Tirrell
Visits to U.S. doctors for influenza-like illnesses declined for a fourth straight week as swine flu retreated in 11 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Physician visits related to flu fell “sharply” in the week ended Nov. 21, extending a decline that followed a four- week increase, the Atlanta-based agency said on its Web site today. Thirty-two states reported widespread influenza activity, down from 43 the week before.
Hospitalizations, deaths and doctor visits are still higher than expected at this time of year, the CDC said. Thirty-five flu-related deaths in children under age 18 were reported during the week, bringing the total to 234 since April of this year.
“We wouldn’t be surprised to see another rise in activity later this year or early next year when schools are back in session after the Christmas break,” said Tom Skinner, a CDC spokesman, in a telephone interview today. “There’s still a lot of flu out there.”
The CDC has been tracking all influenza activity in the U.S., showing that swine flu, or H1N1, is the dominant strain rather than seasonal flu.
Swine flu spread across the globe at an unprecedented rate since it was first identified in April. More than 22 million people were infected and 3,900 died in the U.S. in the six months after the new strain emerged, according to CDC estimates.
Risk Groups
While most swine flu infections are no worse than seasonal flu, in rare cases the disease leads to severe illness and death in otherwise healthy people. The new pandemic strain of H1N1 influenza puts pregnant women, young people and those with chronic health conditions such as asthma and diabetes at greater risk, with about 90 percent of deaths occurring among those younger than 64, according to the CDC. By contrast, the majority of deaths from seasonal flu are among people older than 80.
About 36,000 people die each year in the U.S. from seasonal flu, according to the CDC. From 5 percent to 20 percent of the population annually gets sick with the virus, leading to more than 200,000 hospitalizations.
Suspicious Swine Flu Numbers

As the college campuses began to populate, stories began to emerge about the high rate of swine flu among students. However, a little known fact was that most places were not actually testing for swine flu. Any student presenting with flu-like symptoms was presumed to have H1N1 because seasonal flu does not usually hit until much later in the fall.
When I heard this, I was suspicious of whether there really was an outbreak of swine flu on campus, but there was just no data one way or the other. Now there is: the world-renowned Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia routinely tests patients for rhinovirus (the common cold) and H1N1. They found that most of their patients with flu-like symptoms had a cold, not swine flu.
But, there’s more…
Doctors and researchers are now worried that this is a new, more severe strain of rhinovirus (second verse, same as the first). It seems to me that because hospitals and doctors are seeing a rise in the number of patients with respiratory illnesses, and schools are closing due to low attendance, that the experts think this cold is more severe than normal colds.
This, again, is highly suspect reasoning. Schools, doctors, public health bureaucrats, and just about everyone else is recommending that people with a respiratory illness should not go to work or school and, instead, should see a doctor to be treated for the flu. So, while parents may normally send their child to school or choose to save time and money by no taking their little one to the doctor at the first sniffle, they are now petrified of the swine flu and taking all precautions. Thus, the increase in school closings and hospital admissions may simply be an unintended consequence of our leaders’ fearmongering.
AIDS Leading Cause of Death for Women

In its first study of women’s health around the globe, the World Health Organization said Monday that the AIDS virus is the leading cause of death and disease among women between the ages of 15 and 44.
Unsafe sex is the leading risk factor in developing countries for these women of childbearing age, with others including lack of access to contraceptives and iron deficiency, the WHO said. Throughout the world, one in five deaths among women in this age group is linked to unsafe sex, according to the U.N. agency.
“Women who do not know how to protect themselves from such infections, or who are unable to do so, face increased risks of death or illness,” WHO said in a 91-page report. “So do those who cannot protect themselves from unwanted pregnancy or control their fertility because of lack of access to contraception.”
The data were included in a report that attempts to highlight the unequal health treatment a female faces from childbirth through infancy and adolescence into maturity and old age.
WHO chief Dr. Margaret Chan noted that women enjoy a biological advantage because they tend to live six to eight years longer than men. But in many parts of the world they suffer serious disadvantages because of poverty, poorer access to health care and cultural norms that put a priority on the well-being of men, she said.
Obesity Responsible for 100,000 Cancer Cases Annually

As many as 100,000 cases of cancer could be prevented in the U.S. each year if Americans get rid of their excess body fat.
That’s according to estimates released by the American Institute for Cancer Research. The estimates suggest that heart disease, diabetes, and joint problems aren’t the only illnesses in which rampant obesity is causing havoc.
The group says overweight and obesity could be the cause of more than 6% of all the estimated 1.6 million cancer cases diagnosed in the U.S. each year.
A 2007 report from the American Institute for Cancer Research and the World Cancer Research Foundation reviewed hundreds of studies and found what researchers called “convincing evidence” that obesity was tied to several cancers. Those included cancer of the esophagus, pancreas, and kidneys. It also included colorectal cancer and endometrial cancer (a form of uterine cancer).
Researchers also said it was “probable” that excess abdominal fat was a cause of breast cancer in postmenopausal women.
Experts took estimates of obesity’s influence on cancer and applied them to a breakdown of the approximately 1.6 million U.S. cancer cases per year.
The researchers estimate that excess body fat is the cause of 33,000 breast cancer cases each year, nearly one-sixth the total cases in postmenopausal women. Obesity could be to blame for nearly 21,000 cases of endometrial cancer and more than 13,000 cases of colorectal cancer per year.
Researchers stressed that the figures are only estimates, and that individual cancer cases can have many, inter-connected causes.
Map Out Your DNA for Only $4400

DNA sequencing can shows illnesses you’re predisposed to contract or let doctors tailor medicines just for you. Someday it will be a cheap, routine part of medical care. That day just got closer.
The price of DNA sequencing has been steadily falling since the Human Genome Project finished deciphering a complete human genome for $2.7 billion in 2003. Complete Genomics, a biotech company in Mountain View, Calif., has now delivered on a promise it made in Feb. 2009 to read an individual human genome for less than the cost of a used car — around $4,400.
“We’ve ended up with a cost of sequencing that’s ten times less than anyone else’s,” said Clifford Reid, president of Mountain View’s Complete Genomics.
Reid credits two techniques — described in the latest issue of the journal Science — for the cost savings: the ability to pack DNA tightly together to use lower amounts of expensive chemicals and a new way of quickly reading the A’s, G’s, C’s and T’s that spell out our genetic code.
Like existing technologies, the new technique is not perfectly accurate. It makes about 30,000 mistakes as it reads through the 3 billion letters in the human genome. This error rate, not quite good enough for clinical applications in individual patients, is sufficient for scientists looking for genetic differences among large groups of people that might shed light on diseases such as cancer.
Between March and Sept., Complete Genomics sequenced the genomes of 14 people. The Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle, Wash., has hired the company to sequence 100 human genomes for a study of Huntington’s disease.
