“Isn’t it amazing that people are still smoking cigarettes? Not only is it one of the worst things you could to for your health (because of the chemicals, not necessarily the tobacco) but have you noticed the type of people who still smoke? They are usually poor, uneducated, brainwashed, and depressed. It’s tough to quit – but you CAN do it.” –KTRN
The health of pregnant women and babies improved after smoking in public places was banned in Scotland, a new study says.
Preterm deliveries dropped by more than 10 percent, and the percentage of infants born small for their gestational age dropped by 5 percent after the legislation went into effect in 2006, according to the findings from researchers at the University of Glasgow.
“There is growing evidence of the potential for tobacco control legislation to have a positive impact on health,” according to the researchers.
In their study, the researchers collected data on all babies born in Scottish maternity hospitals between January 1996 and December 2009.

Arsenic Found in Infant Formula

Is arsenic in your breakfast? A new study suggests that might just be what you – or your children – are having each morning.
Researchers at Dartmouth College already knew that rice can be a major source of inorganic arsenic. This includes rice products, such as organic brown rice syrup, an alternative sweetener to high fructose corn syrup. Exposure to high levels of inorganic arsenic over time has been tied to increased risk for cancer.
For the study – published in the Feb. 16 issue of Environmental Health Perspectives – the researchers investigated levels of arsenic in commercially available brown rice syrups, and in products containing the syrups, including infant formula, cereal and energy bars, and high energy foods used by endurance athletes.
What did they find? Surprising levels of arsenic in these products containing organic brown rice syrup.
Out of 17 infant formulas tested, 15 did not contain organic brown rice syrups – and had relatively low levels of arsenic. As for the two formulas that listed organic brown rice syrup as the primary ingredient – those contained 20 times as much arsenic as ones without the rice ingredient. One had a total arsenic concentration that was six times the federal limit of 10 parts per billion (ppb) for total arsenic in bottled or public drinking water.

Autism Signs Detected in Brain Scans of Infants

Brain scans of infants may predict high risk for autism, new research shows. While symptoms of an autism spectrum disorder usually appear before age three, they are typically not identified until after a child’s first birthday.
The new study – published in the Feb. 17 edition of the American Journal of Psychiatry – looked at the brain development of 92 high-risk infants ages 6 to 24 months. The babies were considered high-risk because they all have older brothers or sisters who have been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, said the researchers from the Infant Brain Imaging Study network.
The infants underwent a type of MRI called diffusion tensor imaging at 6 months, 1 year and 2 years of age. With the repeated scans, researchers created 3D pictures that showed changes in white matter – the part of the brain embedded with nerve fibers that help different areas of the brain connect with one another.
What did they find? Researchers saw differences in the brain matter of children who were eventually diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder by age 2. These children were more likely to show thicker, denser nerve-fiber readings at 6 months – but thinner white matter at age 2.
“These findings raise the possibility of developing imaging markers that could detect risk for autism in advance of actual symptoms, and [to] begin treatment before symptoms begin,” study author Geri Dawson, chief science officer at Autism Speaks, told HealthDay.
Study authors caution the findings do not mean that autism can be diagnosed with brain scans, but the research is a step in earlier treatment.

HHS Warns That All Infant Formulas Are Contaminated With Toxic Fluoride
March 15, 2011 by admin

By: Jonathan Benson
Piggybacking on the recent government announcement concerning overexposure to fluoride, the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has now announced that all infant formulas are contaminated with fluoride, and that when mixed with the fluoridated water provided in most US cities, the combination is a toxic threat to babies and infants.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly half of all US children are overexposed to fluoride. Many of these children are now afflicted with dental fluorosis as a result, which is a tooth disease involving the mottling and staining of enamel. In January, the CDC adjusted the recommended recommended water fluoridation levels from 1.2 milligrams per liter (mg/L) to 0.7 mg/L.
However, a 2009 study published in the Journal of the American Dental Association says that even the adjusted levels are too high, stating that “[m]ost infants from birth to age 12 months who consume predominantly powdered and liquid concentrate formula are likely to exceed the upper tolerable limit [of fluoride] if the formula is reconstituted with optimally fluoridated (0.7 – 1.2 ppm).”
Besides baby formulas and tap water, many other food items are also contaminated with toxic fluoride. Juices, crackers, breads, teas, and fruits often contain high levels of fluoride. And since there is no verifiable way to know precisely how much fluoride children are ingesting from various food and drinks, exposure is far more widespread than most people are aware.
“Exposure to excessive consumption of fluoride over a lifetime may lead to increased likelihood of bone fractures in adults, and may result in effects on bone leading to pain and tenderness,” says the US Environmental Protection Agency on its fluoride information page.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has never properly tested fluoride for safety. It is the only unregulated, unapproved drug that is forcefully injected into the water supplies of millions of people who have no choice in whether or not they are exposed to it. There is no justifiable reason why fluoride is added to water, and there is no “safe” level of it.
Numerous studies have found, however, that fluoride exposure is linked to lowered IQ levels, mental retardation, thyroid dysfunction, bone problems, the calcification of the pineal gland and other organs, arthritis, autoimmune disorders, gastrointestinal problems, kidney disease, respiratory dysfunction, sexual disorders, cancer, and tooth decay

Whooping Cough Makes a Comeback

The Washington Post
By: Arthur Allen
For most parents with young children today, whooping cough is a disease that exists in vintage movies or the Burl Ives song where it causes a chicken to “sneeze his head and tail right off.”
But whooping cough is far from a whimsical memory. It is staging a comeback in California, in what public health officials worry could be a harbinger of a national trend.
Nine infants have died of the disease in California this year, and more than 600 other babies have become desperately ill. To keep them alive, doctors have sometimes resorted to blood transfusions, hooking the babies up to devices resembling heart bypass machines. More than 4,100 cases have been reported so far, creating what officials call the worst pertussis epidemic in the state since 1955.
The resurgence of the highly contagious disease is particularly alarming because most children in California, as in the rest of the country, have received six doses of vaccine by age 12.
A combination of factors may be to blame.
In California it is legal and quite easy to refuse vaccination, and the discredited theory that vaccines cause autism has created clusters of unvaccinated children. In affluent Marin County north of San Francisco, for example, about 13 percent of parents refused vaccination for their kindergartners in 2009, according to the state’s Department of Public Health. Marin has one of the highest rates of infection this year.
Pertussis is more infectious than smallpox, polio or influenza, and it spreads quickly through the unprotected. It often escalates from what seems to be a regular cold into a severe respiratory infection that causes some patients to gasp for air with a distinctive high-pitched whooping sound.
But while shunning vaccine is probably playing a role in the epidemic, particularly in some areas of the state, it isn’t the only cause, according to Kathleen Harriman, California’s chief epidemiologist for vaccine-preventable diseases. Better detection explains some of the increased reports of pertussis. But Harriman and other experts worry that the epidemic could also point to serious problems with the current vaccines.
In the view of some pertussis experts, the vaccines in use since the mid-1990s aren’t as effective as some of the vaccines they replaced.
“The acellular vaccines simply aren’t as good as the good whole-cell vaccines,” says James Cherry of UCLA, who has studied whooping cough for the past 30 years.
Those whole-cell vaccines, developed in the 1940s, were made by deactivating whole pertussis bacteria. While they were effective against whooping cough, they caused seizures and high fevers in some children and were blamed for rare cases of brain damage. The controversy over the whole-cell vaccines began in the late 1970s and never really ended, but they were replaced in the United States by vaccines that instead contained varying amounts and types of purified pertussis proteins.
These acellular vaccines were safer and are said by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to be 80 to 90 percent effective. But Cherry believes that the trials that established this figure – most of those studies were done in Europe – overestimated the degree of protection. Sometimes the vaccines prevented classic whooping cough, but the patients got lighter versions of the disease and were still contagious, said Cherry, who was involved in the trials.
Frits Mooi of the Dutch National Institute of Public Health and the Environment, holds another disturbing view. His research shows that pertussis bacteria have evolved mechanisms to evade vaccine-produced immunity.
While he emphasized, in an e-mail exchange, that increased vaccination is still the best way to lower the pertussis rates at present, in the long run public health officials can’t avoid facing the evidence of bacterial mutation and “should strive for pertussis vaccines that protect longer.”
Although Cherry and other experts are skeptical about whether the pertussis evolution found by Mooi has diminished vaccine effectiveness, they agree with him on one unpleasant fact: Unlike with many other diseases against which we immunize, such as measles, vaccination doesn’t always prevent you from getting whooping cough. Neither, in fact, does natural infection.
“My one-line explanation is, ‘There’s no such thing as being fully vaccinated against pertussis,’ ” said Thomas Clark, a leading pertussis tracker at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. “Your immunity is always waning over time.”
Decline, then revival
Despite current concerns, there is no question that vaccines have done a good job at suppressing a disease that used to be a scourge. Before the introduction of whole-cell vaccines, whooping cough was at best an unpleasant passage of childhood, at worst a deadly tragedy. It claimed up to 10,000 lives each year in the United States.
As vaccination became widespread, the number of U.S. cases declined by more than 99 percent. But after bottoming out in 1976, the numbers began to creep up, especially in the past decade. In 2009, according to the CDC, there were nearly 17,000 reported cases, including 14 deaths nationally.
The acellular vaccines prevent disease in many people, and when disease occurs it is less serious in the vaccinated. Of the nine fatalities in California, eight were children too young to be vaccinated. The ninth child was 2 months old, had been born very premature and had received one shot.
Whooping cough is a cyclical disease. The last nationwide peak year was 2005, when more than 25,000 cases were reported and 39 people died.
There’s no sign of a major outbreak this year in this region, with only 89 cases reported so far in Maryland and about 150 in Virginia. In both states and the District, it is much more difficult than it is in California for parents to exempt their children from vaccination.
But CDC officials say the California epidemic could herald a wider spread and are recommending that parents make sure their kids are vaccinated. Last week, officials in Indiana and South Carolina said they were seeing an upsurge of the disease.
Before 2005, there was no persussis-containing vaccine for anyone older than 6. Since then, booster vaccines have been licensed, and most jurisdictions, including Maryland, Virginia and the District, require adolescents to get a booster by age 12.
Public health authorities are urging adults to get boosters, too, especially hospital employees, new mothers and others in contact with vulnerable infants.

Hidden Papers Expose Lies About Vaccine for Infants

British government policy on measles vaccination for children has changed for no discernible reason notes Christina England, writing on vactruth.com, citing an internal document from 1968.
The document, titled “Notes On the Use and Storage of Measles Vaccine (Live Attenuated) for Routine Vaccines,” clearly states in Section 7 that the vaccine should not be given to children under the age of nine months old. According to the paper’s authors, the presence of maternal antibodies in the blood of such children interferes with the action of the vaccine, making it ineffective. Instead, the government recommended vaccination at the age of two after vaccination for diptheria, polio, tetanus and whooping cough.
England contrasts this with the ongoing push for earlier measles vaccination, most recently highlighted with a study that found almost no maternal antibodies present in children’s bodies by the age of six months.
She also draws attention to Section 6 of the government document, which acknowledges that “mild febrile reactions and transient rashes may be expected to follow the administration of the vaccine in a substantial proportion of cases” but that “the Committee on Safety of Drugs … does not however, wish to receive reports of mild febrile reactions and rashes associated with the use of this vaccine.”
Section 8 then goes on to recommend that in order to reduce the risk of adverse effects, “an interval of three to four weeks should normally be allowed to elapse between the administration of measles vaccine and any other vaccine, whichever is given first.”
Yet today, the vaccines for measles, mumps and rubella are given simultaneously, in the form of the MMR shot.
“How safe is the MMR vaccine?” England writes. “The drug company that makes the MMR vaccine publishes an extensive list of warnings, contraindications, and adverse reactions associated with this triple shot. … Afflictions affecting nearly every body system — blood, lymphatic, digestive, cardiovascular, immune, nervous, respiratory, and sensory — have been reported.”

95% Of Infants Are Vitamin D Deficient

Natural News
Two studies published in the journal Pediatrics highlight that although vitamin D deficiency is widespread among infants in the United States, most pediatricians remain unaware of the problem.
The first study, conducted by researchers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), found that only 5 to 13 percent of breast-fed infants were receiving at least 400 IU of vitamin D per day, the amount currently recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Human breast milk is actually relatively low in vitamin D, probably because during our evolutionary history most babies got plenty of exposure to sunlight.
Although formula-fed infants were not included in the study, researchers noted that an infant would need to drink 32 ounces of fortified formula per day to get 400 IU of vitamin D, an amount that is probably unrealistic for young children.
The body produces vitamin D when exposed to UV-B radiation from sunlight. The nutrient is essential for the development and maintenance of bones and the immune system, and deficiency can increase the risk of soft or brittle bones, infection, cancer, heart disease and autoimmune disorders. Yet the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that infants get no direct sunlight at all for the first six months of life, and that they wear protective clothing and sunscreen beyond that age – effectively ruling out the healthiest, most reliable source of this essential nutrient.
Making matters worse, according to the CDC study, only 1 to 13 percent of children under the age of one take a vitamin D supplement.
A second study in the same issue found a lower (but still high) rate of vitamin D deficiency, with 58 percent of newborns and 36 percent of mothers testing deficient. A full 30 percent of mothers who took prenatal vitamins were still deficient in vitamin D.
Although increased sun exposure improved mothers’ vitamin D levels, it did not raise those of their infants. This further suggests that breast milk is a poor source of vitamin D and that infants need to be exposed to sunlight directly in order to synthesize the vitamin for themselves.
Recall of Kids’ Tylenol, Motrin, Zyrtec, Benadryl

By Judith Graham and Duaa Eldeib
Anxious parents are preparing to call doctors Monday morning and scouring the Internet for information after an enormous recall of over-the-counter liquid medications for infants and children that was announced abruptly on Friday evening.
The recall affects all unexpired lots of Tylenol, Motrin, Zyrtec and Benadryl formulated for youngsters — more than 43 liquid products in all. Parents across the country rely on the medications to ease their children’s aches and pains, fevers and allergy-associated runny noses and sneezes.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration advised families to stop using the products, noting that some may contain “tiny particles” while others have too much active ingredients or inactive ingredients that don’t meet specifications. McNeil Consumer Healthcare, the manufacturer, and federal officials said the prospect of serious medical problems was “remote.”
But mothers and fathers in the Chicago area said they are nervous.
“I have to think if they’re going to recall these major blockbuster kid drugs, there’s more to it,” said Julia Goebel, a Lombard mother of a 4-year-old and an 18-month-old who is following developments closely.
“I’m just going to toss it,” said Beverly Singleton, an Oak Park grandmother who keeps Children’s Motrin in her medicine chest for her grandchildren’s visits. “I don’t want to take any chances.”
For its part, McNeil set up a hot line for parents (888-222-6036) but that number featured only a rendition of the company’s press release on Sunday when a reporter called. That release, including a list of all affected products, is available at http://www.mcneilproductrecall.com. McNeil is a unit of Johnson & Johnson.
Still, some parents said they were impressed by the company’s prompt action.
“If it’s something that’s being disclosed from the start, I think I should stick with them,” said Leonardo Valenca, visiting Chicago with his wife and twin 7-month-old daughters over the weekend. “It’s different than the way Toyota handled (its recall).”
The Tribune asked three medical experts what they would advise parents, given the limited information available.
Families should feel comfortable using generic versions of the drugs, said Dr. Saul Weiner, an associate professor of pediatrics and internal medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago Medical Center. There’s no reason to doubt generic drugs’ efficacy or safety, and most retailers carry them.
