3 Ways To Be Happier Now

By: Kristi Blicharski
I really love my life! It wasn’t always that way. It took a lot of hard work, important lessons and many shifts in perception to get to this place. I’ve learned to step into myself and who I truly am, and I’ve learned to get out of my own way.
Something else I learned along the way is that all human beings have a single life purpose in common. That purpose is to be happy. For a big part of my life, I spent so much time struggling, trying to figure out how to feel happier, to get to a happier place, or to get my hands around the next thing or achievement that would “make me happy.” It never seemed to work. I know now that what I didn’t do was just allow myself to simply be happy right then and there.
The truth is that authentic happiness and inner-peace lies in the present moment, right now, within us, waiting and longing to be embraced. Once I finally understood this idea, my life changed profoundly.
Along my own journey to be happy, I discovered a number of ideas and tools that work extremely well to assist in embracing the joy that is always available in each moment. There are three in particular that I’ve found to be fantastically helpful.
First, view happiness as an activity. Not just as a feeling, but also as something we take active part in doing and creating. Aristotle said, “Happiness is a state of activity.” This notion entirely changed my perception. When we’re in the midst of actively doing something we enjoy, being of service to others, or taking part in something healthful like exercise, meditation, or munching down a big salad, we feel happy and empowered. This is doing happiness. It’s all about choosing how we create and live each moment.
Second, re-think mornings. Our thoughts have a deep impact on our world. I remember a time in my life when I was waking up each day in a place of complete lack, swimming in negative, limiting thoughts that left me forcing myself to get out of bed with a heavy heart on a regular basis. Skipping breakfast, loading up on caffeine, and rushing to get of out the door on time didn’t help. I was carrying that nasty energy with me into the day ahead.
Once I realized that the way I was starting my day was creating the path for the rest of it, I understood how extremely important it is to make mornings as positive as possible. I’ve now changed my thoughts in the mornings to focus on the positive, and I’ve changed my routine to include plenty of time, a decent breakfast, and reading uplifting posts from my favorite blogs. It’s worked wonders. My days, and my life, have radically improved.
Finally, open yourself to recognize and receive the limitless joy, comfort, and wonder that is all around at every moment in the little things. This is excellent everyday practice, but it’s especially helpful during challenging times. It’s so easy to get so caught up in focusing on the big stuff in life that we miss the bliss that can be found in all the amazing, beautiful small things, which actually aren’t small at all.
The orchid plant in my office is a great example. Sometimes when I’m feeling a bit stressed, I focus on the remarkable intricacy and beauty of this living miracle, and it really puts things in perspective. I also have a super cute glass flying pig on my desk to remind me to say “no” when I need to. It makes me smile every time I look at it, and serves as a great reminder to be true to myself. That little winged pig has a big impact.
Changing the way we perceive happiness can completely transform the way we experience it, as well as greatly increase its presence. I believe the same applies to balance, love, and passion. It’s all about choice, thoughts, and taking an active role in doing, creating, recognizing, and embracing. Your happiest place is right here, right now. In this moment. Live it. Rock it. Make it beautiful.

TV Tells Kids Fame is the Most Important Thing in Life

The most important thing in life is to be a good and kind person, to love yourself and others and take an active and inquisitive interest in the world arou …
Whoa!
Someone is watching reruns of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” on Sunday mornings. Change the channel. That’s not what television is teaching kids, according to researchers at the University of California at Los Angeles.
The most important thing in life is to be famous. And you don’t even have to be famous for being good. You can be famous for being tan.
LiveScience reports researchers looked at the values promoted on television when today’s adults were growing up as opposed to what their kids watched. Their conclusion?
Ron Howard can be very proud of himself.
Before he was a film director, he played Opie Taylor on “The Andy Griffith Show” and Richie Cunningham on “Happy Days.” Researchers used both shows — as well as “The Lucy Show” and “Laverne & Shirley” — to compare with modern shows like “American Idol” and “Hannah Montana.”
They specifically wanted to study the values these shows promoted among 9- to 11-year-olds from 1967 to 2007.
Researchers found the old shows exalted benevolence, self-acceptance, community and tradition, while modern shows stress fame as the No. 1 value.
A sense of community was the No. 1 value back when Fonzie and the gang ruled the airwaves in the 1970s. By 2007, researchers found that value fell to No. 11. The top five values nowadays? Fame, achievement, popularity, image and financial success.
Not cool, as the Fonz would say.
“The rise of fame in preteen television may be one influence in the documented rise of narcissism in our culture,” researcher Patricia Greenfield, a psychology professor at UCLA, tells LiveScience. “Popular television shows are part of the environment that causes the increased narcissism, but they also reflect the culture.”
In 1997, the top five values were community feeling, benevolence (being kind and helping others), image, tradition and self-acceptance. In 2007, benevolence dropped to the 12th spot, while financial success went from 12th place in 1967 and 1997 to fifth in 2007.
The two least emphasized values in 2007 were spiritualism (No. 16) and tradition (No. 15). Tradition had previously ranked No. 4 in 1997.
LiveScience reports researchers analyzed Nielsen demographic data to determine the most popular shows with 9- to 11-year-olds and then conducted a survey of 60 participants, ages 18 to 59, to determine how important each value was in episodes of the various shows.
“The biggest change occurred from 1997 to 2007, when YouTube, Facebook and Twitter exploded in popularity,” lead researcher Yalda Uhls tells LiveScience. “Their growth parallels the rise in narcissism and the drop in empathy among college students in the United States, as other research has shown.”

Brain Chemicals From Love Mimics Cocaine High

Brain chemicals released when a person falls in love come from 12 parts of the brain — all releasing euphoria-inducing chemicals that create the same euphoric feeling as cocaine, U.S. researchers say. Stephanie Ortigue of Syracuse University and colleagues worldwide conducted a meta-analysis that finds falling in love can take one-fifth of a second and then the brain starts to release euphoria-inducing chemicals such as dopamine, oxytocin, adrenaline and vasopressin, but the heart is involved as well.
“I would say the brain, but the heart is also related because the complex concept of love is formed by both bottom-up and top-down processes from the brain to the heart and vice versa,” Ortigue says in a statement.
The analysis shows different parts of the brain are involved in love. For example, the unconditional love between a mother and a child include the middle of the brain, but passionate love is sparked by the reward part of the brain.
The meta-analysis also finds blood levels of nerve growth factor also increased when falling in love. This molecule plays an important role in the social chemistry of humans, or the phenomenon of “love at first sight,” Ortigue says.
Conversely, when love goes wrong, it can cause significant emotional stress and depression.
The findings are published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.

Love May Be Nature’s Painkiller

Love hurts, at least according to many a romantic songwriter, but it may also help ease pain, US scientists suggest.
Brain scans suggest many of the areas normally involved in pain response are also activated by amorous thoughts.
Stanford University researchers gave 15 students mild doses of pain, while checking if they were distracted by gazing at photos of their beloved.
The study focused on people early in a romance, journal PLoS One reported, so the “drug of love” may wear off.
The scientists who carried out the experiment used “functional magnetic resonance imaging” (fMRI) to measure activity in real-time in different parts of the brain. It has been known for some time that strong feelings of love are linked to intense activity in several different brain regions.
These include areas linked to the brain chemical dopamine, which produces the brain’s feel-good state following certain stimulants – from eating sweets to taking cocaine.
“Light up”The Stanford University researchers had noticed that when we feel pain, some of the same areas “light up” on the scans – and wondered whether one might affect the other.
They recruited a dozen students who were all in the first nine months of a relationship, defined as “the first phase of intense love”.
Each was asked to bring in a picture of the object of their affection and photos of what they deemed an equally attractive acquaintance. While their brains were scanned, they were shown these pictures, while a computer controlled heat pad placed in the palm of their hand was set up to cause them mild pain.
They found that viewing the picture of their beloved reduced perceptions of pain much more than looking at the image of the acquaintance.
Dr Jarred Younger, one of the researchers involved, said that the “love-induced analgesia” appeared to involve more primitive functions of the brain, working in a similar way to opioid painkillers.
“One of the key sites is the nucleus accumbens, a key reward addiction centre for opioids, cocaine and other drugs of abuse.
“The region tells the brain that you really need to keep doing this.”
Professor Paul Gilbert, a neuropsychologist from the University of Derby, said that the relationship between emotional states and the perception of pain was clear.
He said: “One example is a footballer who has suffered quite a painful injury, but who is able to continue playing because of his emotionally charged state.”
He added that while the effect noticed by the Stanford researchers might only be short-lived in the early stages of a love affair, it may well be replaced by something similar later in a relationship, with a sense of comfort and wellbeing generating the release of endorphins.
“It’s important to recognise that people who feel alone and depressed may have very low pain thresholds, whereas the reverse can be true for people who feel secure and cared for.
“This may well be an issue for the health service, as patients are sometimes rushed through the system, and perhaps there isn’t this focus on caring that might have existed once.”

Your radio show woke me up…

Dear Kevin,
Last winter was one of the worst winters I have ever experienced. A lot of things happened at one time and it was very overwhelming for me. My dog died, I got laid off from my job, I had family issues, self esteem issues, health issues, financial issues and it seemed like I was getting nowhere in life. I would spend my days going to the Wendy’s down the street from me and eat myself numb. I would have bags of candy throughout the day and watch House for hours. After a while, my friends noticed that I had gained quite a bit of weight and that I became a little “slow,” with my thinking process, in other more blatant words, that I was getting more stupid. Back then I weighed 230 pounds and I could not construct a proper sentence because of all the TV I was watching.
Today, I am a healthy 212 (I am currently on the McCombs Plan, it is my 7th week) and I expect it to go down even further. My relationship with my step-mom, who I once hated, is now flourishing. I have the greatest friends, who support me and grow with me, and SO much more.
But all that’s irrelevant. What is relevant is the way I feel and my outlook on life, and the person I am becoming. I am in the same predicament I was last winter, but not really! This time I am a different person and I’m constantly getting better. I do not have any money right now and I am still unemployed, but you know what, life to me is bigger than that and I FEEL fantastic and I know BIG things are in store for me.
I am enrolled in the lazy man’s way to a fortune program; I have no idea how I’m going to find the money, BUT I WILL GET THE MONEY. I go through the day sometimes getting very emotional at all the beauty and good around me. I feel so lucky to be alive! There is so much I can share with you, but it would honestly take 50 pages to write about it!
Kevin, I understand that I create my life, and I alone have the say in everything that happens. I can’t help myself, but to give you most of the credit. Kevin, without your radio show and without your mission, I would be overweight, illiterate, UNHAPPY, kept in the dark, and wasting a life that I believe is going to make a difference on this earth.
Your radio show woke me up. And I KNOW it is going to be waking up a lot more people around the world. Kevin, I thank you, my family thanks you, my friends thank you, and planet earth thanks you. You are truly one of the only people who dare expose what really is going on in this country, and most importantly, making it better, by empowering people and stirring things up.
Kevin, I don’t like your radio show, I LOVE your radio show!! It is truly a way of life. My friends and I were driving to Chicago for the G.I.N. meeting from New Jersey because we were absolutely committed to going, no excuses. It was 13 hours each way and we had to drive through the night to be at the seminar on time. The whole 13 hours we were playing podcasts from your radio show! That’s 13 hours each way! It was absolutely hysterical because I only had 4 of your radio shows and I just kept listening to the same ones over and over again! It never got old!!!! May seem a little extreme, but what can I say, I love hearing what you have to say.

Hi KT,
Ever since I first read your books and heard about your show, I have been listening to your show and the books you recommend on audio disc at work. It is such a huge change for me! I never knew how much fun learning information was until it became something I couldn’t get enough of. I also love when you talk about the food you make and eat all the time. If you knew me, you would know I’m far from a cook. If it couldn’t be made in a few minutes in the microwave or bought at a drive through, I basically never ate it. Since your books and shows, I have not had any fast food or microwaved food since about July and I love to cook. I have cooked and made so much stuff from scratch and I have so much fun doing it. It’s crazy! I use to be the type who could burn a pot of water. Your CD’s and GIN has helped me a lot to change the way I am and I am excited to see where it takes me.
When I was in Cancun I really had almost no intentions of going to Dominican Republic, but just like Cancun, one night listening to you talk about “making the decision,” I talked with my girlfriend asked if she wanted to go to Cancun if I could find out how to pay for it and of course she said yes. So, I went home registered for the event with the deposit and actually came up with the money to go. In Cancun I made the same decision truly not knowing how I was going to pull it off. But in making that decision, instead of sitting on my butt throughout the winter like I usually do because roofing slows down, I am taking every avenue possible and doing things I wouldn’t have before to make any money to make sure I can pay for this trip. I went to the Chicago event and made a similar decision there, too. These kinds of decisions are turning me back into the motivated person I used to be and I’m loving it.
The reason I love listening to your show and going to any event you are at is because it raises me back up to a higher level that I really love sitting at. Keep up the good work and I will see you in Dominican Republic one way or another!
