Fish Oil Beneficial During Pregnancy

Natural News

By Dr. Daniel Zagst

By 2012, most people understand the importance of including omega-3 fatty acids to their diets. Commonly found in fish oil, omega-3 fatty acids have countless benefits to a person’s health and complexion. From teens to the elderly, everyone can benefit from the wonders of omega-3 fatty acids, but what about pregnant moms and newborns? Recent research indicates that moms and fetuses need fish oils just as much as the rest of the population.

Pregnant women have been advised to consume omega-3 fatty acids in order to ensure proper development of the fetal neurological system. Even after birth, fish oil supplementation can improve the early development of a newborn’s brain, visual system, and motor function in women who breastfeed. These fish oils, most notably the fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is part of a group of omega-3s known as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). The human brain is full of PUFAs that modulate inflammation and provide integrity to the neuronal network. By supplying a developing brain with plenty of PUFAs, a mother can support their child’s proper development. Along with benefits to the child, a pregnant mother that consumes fish oils can prevent pre-term labor, reduce the risk of pre-ecclampsia, and may even help in the prevention of post-pardum depression (PPD).

Another breakthrough in fish oil research shows that fish oil supplementation during pregnancy decreases the risk of a newborn developing eczema. In a study of 700 pregnant women, those who took fish oil supplements versus a placebo had a decreased incidence of infant eczema by three times. When DHA and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) enter the cell membrane, they suppress inflammation that could potentially lead to various allergies and skin reactions that develop in early childhood. This study is ongoing as it plans to follow the children until age six to determine the extent of the lasting benefits.

Mother Disciplined After Confronting Son’s Bullies

By: Esme Murphy

A mother who confronted two boys who bullied her 10-year-old son has been banned from her son’s Minneapolis school and even her son’s bus stop for the rest of the year.

Tanya Sydney said she does not regret taking actions into her own hand to keep her son from being a victim.

Last week, fifth-grader Sovante Griffin told his Mom and Stepdad he was being bullied on the school bus. Sydney said he told her boys were hitting him, so she took matters into her own hands. She went to the bus stop the next day and confronted the bus driver.

“He told me ‘I am doing the best I can, I can’t be in 50 million places at once,’” Sydney said. She then got on the bus and yelled at the two boys that Griffin said were the bullies. “Specifically to the two boys I said you need to keep your hands to yourselves,” she said.

The driver ordered her off the bus. She and Griffin then walked to Lake Nokomis Community School. Sydney said when she and Griffin got to school they were met by the school’s police liaison officer, the principal and a transportation supervisor.

Sydney said the supervisor pulled out a photograph of another African-American woman who he said he created a disturbance on a school bus last year.

“That is when the transportation guy apologized and said ‘I assumed you were the woman from last year,’” she said

Her son and the two bullies later had to apologize to each other. Sydney got a letter from the principal saying she is banned from school grounds and the bus stop for the rest of the school year.

“It’s mindboggling,” she said.

She has filed an appeal to the year-long ban with the Minneapolis School Board. Sydney said she does not regret her actions.

“There are too many stories of children getting bullied. I don’t want it to get to the point were he is scared to get on this bus and he can’t be successful,” she said.

Griffin has gotten back on the bus this week and has been going to school without incident. The school district released a statement on the matter Wednesday, saying they can’t comment on the incident because of data privacy laws.

“Because of data privacy laws, we are unable to share any particulars about this matter. For the safety of students and staff, we are committed to following the MPS policies regarding bus protocol, including only allowing MPS students to board school buses; it is not our protocol to allow parents or other adults to board school buses. Maintaining a safe and secure environment in the school district, including our school buses, is a top priority.

Minneapolis Public Schools encourages parents to contact their school immediately if there are bullying concerns. Our schools take allegations concerning bullying very seriously and have a protocol to address these types of situations,” the statement reads.

DHA In Moms May Help Babies Fight Infection

Giving pregnant moms omega-3 fatty acid supplements might help prevent infection in their infants, suggests new research.

But the benefit of docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA, wasn’t always obvious in the study of Mexican moms, and researchers say not all babies will necessarily be better off because of it.

With a boost in moms’ DHA, “there are not dramatic effects. What we did find, however, is a general trend toward benefit,” said study author Usha Ramakrishnan, of Emory University in Atlanta.

Fatty acids like DHA are found in the body’s disease-fighting cells. But studies that have looked at the effect of fatty acid supplements in kids or adults have shown “inconsistent effects” on the immune system, the authors explain in Pediatrics.

Whether giving pregnant women extra DHA could improve their infants’ immune systems has been even less clear.

To investigate that question, Ramakrishnan and her colleagues recruited more than 1,000 pregnant women — all four or five months along – who were receiving prenatal care at a hospital and several health clinics in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

Half the volunteers took two 200-milligram DHA supplements each day. The other half of the women, serving as a comparison group, took twice-daily placebo capsules containing a blend of corn and soy oils.

Women continued taking the supplements until they gave birth. Then, they brought their new babies back to the general hospital in Cuernavaca at one, three, and six months, and reported on the infants’ recent sickness symptoms.

At one month, babies of moms who had taken DHA had a trend toward fewer total cold symptoms than babies of moms who weren’t supplemented. About 38 percent of DHA group babies showed cold symptoms in the couple of weeks before that appointment, compared to 45 percent of placebo babies.

But the authors couldn’t rule out that the difference was due to chance.

At three and six months, there was no clear distinction between the two groups of babies with regard to cold symptoms. But in babies that did get sick, those whose moms had taken DHA had a shorter duration of some symptoms, such as fever and runny nose at the last visit.

In a couple of cases, babies of DHA moms had suffered symptoms for longer than comparison babies. For example, at the three-month visit, babies with colds had been stuffed up for an extra day in the DHA group, on average, according to their moms’ reports.

Ramakrishnan said that it generally seems safe to take DHA during pregnancy, at least in the doses her team examined. (At much higher doses, similar fatty acids have been linked to bleeding risks.) The 400-milligram daily dose is pretty typical of what would be in a prenatal vitamin or what moms could get in a couple of fish meals each week, she added.

Because of concerns about mercury exposure, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends pregnant women limit their fish intake to two meals per week, choosing fish and shellfish that are low in mercury, such as salmon and shrimp.

DHA supplements can be bought for about $25 to $50 for a six-month supply. Some studies have also linked omega-3 fatty acids to lower cholesterol and a smaller risk of heart disease.

So should all pregnant moms be taking DHA to give their infants an infection-fighting boost?

“I think it may be variable — not everybody may benefit,” Ramakrishnan said. When it comes to infants’ health, “It’s not going to be that magic bullet.”

FDA: Drug Used to Prevent Premature Labor Dangerous for Moms-to-Be

AOL Health

By: Marrecca Fiore

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning that a commonly used drug to prevent preterm labor may be dangerous for moms-to-be.

In a statement issued Thursday, the govermment agency said that terbutaline, which is administered by injection or through an infusion pump in hospital settings, should not be used in pregnant women due to the potential for serious maternal heart problems and death.

Additionally, the FDA is requiring that terbutaline tablets, which are normally used to prevent and treat narrowing of the airways associated with asthma, bronchitis and emphysema, carry a “boxed warning” against the use of this drug to prevent preterm labor.

“Women should be aware that serious and sometimes fatal side effects have been reported after prolonged use of terbutaline in pregnant women,” said Dr. Scott Monroe, director of FDA’s Division of Reproductive and Urologic Products, in a statement. “It is important for patients and health-care professionals to consider all the potential risks and known benefits of any drug before deciding on its use.”

The FDA also said there is no evidence that terbutaline is even effective at preventing premature labor and improving “infant outcomes.” Deaths in pregnant women related to the use of this drug are a known side effect, however.

The new warnings update similar concerns that the agency sent in a letter to doctors in 1997, USA Today reports.

“I hope the FDA’s new warning will help us finish the job that got started with that letter,” Cynthia Pearson, of the National Women’s Health Network, told the newspaper.

But some doctors still believe it can be used safely.

“If you use the tool effectively, it will work,” John Elliott, of Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in Laguna Hills, Calif. and a leading expert on multiple-birth delivery, told USA Today.

A spokeswoman from Alere, a company that provides terbutaline pump therapy, told the newspaper officials were unavailable to comment on the FDA announcement.

Working Moms More Likely to Have Overweight Kids

A new study released by researchers at American University, the University of Chicago, and Cornell University found that how long a mom works has a direct impact on the weight of her children.

The study, which charted the growth of 990 kids starting in 1991 from their birth through childhood, found that number of years that a mother spent away from home due to work-related reasons was related to an increase in their children’s body mass index, or BMI. A BMI that is higher than average can lead into obesity in adulthood.

The researchers believe that these higher obesity rates can be attributed to the fact that when mothers work long hours and get home late, they are not as likely to cook healthy meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and these mothers are not able to grocery-shop for healthier food options.

Instead, tired moms may opt for fast food or other take-out options that are high in fat and provide a quick meal.

Study author Taryn Morrissey said, “About a fifth of American children are considered obese, and childhood obesity has been associated with health, behavior, and academic problems in adolescence and adulthood… community- and school- based programs offer promise for promoting healthy weight by providing information to children and their families about nutrition and exercise, as well as how to make quick, healthy meals.”

According to SmartAboutHealth.com, researchers do not necessarily blame the work specifically, but instead blame the environment it creates at home in terms of sleep habits and meal patterns.

The study will be published in the February issue of Child Development.

On Passports, Mother and Father Will Soon Be ‘Parent 1′ and ‘Parent 2′

January 11, 2011 by admin

Politics Daily

Gay-rights proponents are cheering and some conservatives are up in arms after the State Department said it would replace the words “mother” and “father” on U.S. passport applications with gender-neutral terms.

Instead of “mother” and “father,” the forms will read “parent one” and “parent two.”

A statement on the agency’s website called the changes “improvements” that are being made to provide a more accurate description “of a child’s parents and in recognition of different types of families.”

Brenda Sprague, deputy assistant secretary of State for Passport Services, told Fox News the new forms reflect the realities of the modern world.

“We find that with changes in medical science and reproductive technology that we are confronting situations now that we would not have anticipated 10 or 15 years ago,” Sprague said.

Christian conservative organizations were quick to slam the forthcoming changes.

“Only in the topsy-turvy world of left-wing political correctness could it be considered an ‘improvement’ for a birth-related document to provide less information about the circumstances of that birth,” Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, said in a statement.

Perkins said the gender neutral terms were “designed to advance the causes of same-sex ‘marriage’ and homosexual parenting without statutory authority, and violates the spirit if not the letter of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).”

Under the 1996 federal law, marriage is legally defined as a union between one man and one woman.

Gay-rights supporters hailed the move toward gender neutral terminology.

“Changing the term ‘mother’ and ‘father’ to the more global term of ‘parent’ allows many different types of families to be able to go and apply for a passport for their child without feeling like the government doesn’t recognize their family,” Jennifer Chrisler, executive director of Family Equality Council, told Fox News.

Chrisler, who pushed for the changes for years, praised the government for recognizing that “the family structure is changing.”

“The best thing that we can do is support people who are raising kids in loving, stable families,” she said.

The State Department said the new passport applications will be available online next month.
