National Peanut Butter Day! 5 Reasons Why The Comfort Food Is Healthy, Too

Huffington Post

By HP

“Who new there was a national peanut butter day. Wonder is Congress took a vote and made this into law? Either way, peanut butter rocks.  Almond butter is probably better, but have you have tried it?  It’s not nearly as tasty.” –KTRN

If you didn’t know, today is National Peanut Butter Day. So we thought we’d take a moment to honor the humble spread, not only for its role in our childhoods and its deliciously rich taste, but also for its nutritional power. Sure, the stuff is yummy, but did you know that peanut butter can also play a role in preventing everything from heart disease to Alzheimer’s?

Keep in mind that all-natural peanut butter without added ingredients is the healthy option — many brands include added sugar. And, as with all good things, everything in moderation: a spoonful may be healthy, but a whole jar is certainly not.

Here are some top health properties for peanut butter:

It’s Heart Healthy
Yes, peanut butter has saturated fat and some sodium, but that doesn’t automatically disqualify it as a good-for-you treat. As nutrition expert Dr. Walter C. Willett wrote in the Havard Heart Letter, one serving of peanut butter (about two tablespoons) contains 3.3 grams of saturated fat, but a whopping 12.3 grams of unsaturated fat. That ratio of about 80 percent unsaturated fat is akin to olive oil, a known heart booster. Explained Willet:

The body’s response to saturated fat in food is to increase the amounts of both harmful LDL and protective HDL in circulation. In moderation, some saturated fat is okay. Eating a lot of it, though, promotes artery-clogging atherosclerosis, the process that underlies most cardiovascular disease. In contrast, unsaturated fats, which make up the majority of the fat content in peanut butter, help reduce LDL cholesterol and lower the risk of heart disease.

It’s High In Potassium, The ‘Good’ Salt
A high-sodium diet is associated with high blood pressure, stroke and a host of other conditions, but a high-potassium diet can actually reduce risk of heart disease and improve health. One 2010 study even found that eating just 4.7 grams of potassium had the same health benefit as cutting out 4 grams of sodium. (Of course eating enough peanut butter to reach 4.7 grams of potassium would be excessive, but try combining it with a banana, for a double punch.)

GM Soy Destroying Children

Soy, once touted as a medical miracle, has been outed. Ninety-one percent of the soy we consume is tainted by the filth of the GMO machine, literally the most quietly kept epidemic of our lifetime. Soy makes up a large portion of the diet for the chickens, pigs, and cows some of us eat. Even the vegetarian/vegan community is exposed as a number of meat substitutes list soy as a main ingredient. Soy and soybean oil have wiggled their way into a wide array of processed foods including salad dressings, peanut butter, tamari, mayonnaise, crackers, baby formula, baked good mixes, textured vegetable protein, and the list goes on. So unless you are eating an organic version of any of the above, there is a good chance you are exposing yourself to GMO soy.

Genetically engineered crops are destroying the environment, the health of indigenous communities, and ultimately our health as end of the chain consumers. The American Academy of Environmental Medicine has reported a number of studies. Their results? Frightening. Think major issues like infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, and even changes in the cellular structure of major organs. Also, as a result of the antibiotic resistant genes within GE food, they are the highly suspected culprits behind the new “superbug.” The animals involved in the studies ended up deformed, sterile, and dead.

Children are the most susceptible to these harmful effect, since they are constantly in a state of high growth; parents should take care. GMO foods, and especially soy, have been tied to an increase in allergies, asthma, and a propensity to get antibiotic resistant infections.

None of this would surprise any of the individuals in various South America countries that live near GM crops. South America is the world’s largest provider of soy.

A recent story in the UK Telegraph revealed that the herbicides used on GM soy are so toxic that direct contact often results in severe illness and sometimes death. Petrona Villasboa is one of those that has faced direct loss. Her son was accidenatlly sprayed by one of the machines that are often spraying Monsanto’s Roundup on the surrounding crops. Silvino Talavera died that same day – and it was a horrible death. That’s not all – Non GMO farmers are being displaced, and those that stay run a calculated risk. Mothers living close to GM farmland are twice as likely to have a fetus with a birth deformity.

The industry doesn’t want this information out there. Monsanto provides over 90 percent of GMO soy seeds and related herbicides to farmers worldwide.

Agent Orange was one of Monsanto’s first herbicides and the resulting effect to U.S soldiers and Vietnamese citizens was reprehensible.

Scientist who push to hard to get a widespread scientific inquiry about the devastating effects of GE foods have had subtle and not-so-subtle pressure applied and been forced to back off their findings.

Just as efforts are underway to assist these farmers in seeing the benefits of growing organic food as a means of survival and commerce, the end consumer must also make a change. Soy purchases must be viewed in a whole new light. The best way to protect your family from these potential harmful effects is to remove it from your diet or stick to strictly organic soy and organic processed foods.

Pierre Foods Recalls ‘PB Jamwiches’ Over Possible Listeria Contamination

By: Linda Doell

Pierre Foods recalled 320 cases of its “pb jamwich” crustless peanut butter and strawberry jam sandwiches because of possible listeria monocytogenes contamination, said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

So far, no one has gotten sick from eating the ready-made sandwiches, which were sold at Giant Food stores in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.

Listeria can cause a potentially fatal infection in young children, the elderly or those with weakened immune systems. In pregnant women, it can cause miscarriages and stillbirths and expectant moms are 20 times more likely to get listeriosis than other healthy adults, said the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. Even normally healthy people can suffer from a high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Each year, an estimated 1,600 people become seriously ill with listeriosis — with 260 dying.

Included in the recall is one lot of Pierre pb jamwiches in a 12-count red carton with a UPC code of 7599921368 and a “best if purchased by 03-11-2011,” the FDA said. The sandwiches were sold in the grocers’ freezer section. The recall was prompted after a product sample test detected listeria.

Consumers who have the sandwiches can return them to the store for a refund. Call the company at (800) 982-7091 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Time.

Earlier this month Taylor Farms Pacific recalled broccoli that was used in pre-cooked meals and supermarket deli salads because of potential listeria contamination.

AOL News

By: Steven Hoffer

Just bread and jelly today?

The makers of Skippy Peanut Butter are recalling a shipment of reduced-fat peanut butter because of a possible salmonella contamination.

Luckily, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration reports that no one has gotten sick from eating the peanut butter, but just to stay on the safe side, Surge Desk breaks down what you need to know about the Skippy recall:

What exactly is being recalled?
Certain jars of Skippy Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter Spread and Skippy Reduced Fat Super Chunk Peanut Butter Spread.

How do I know if I should trash my peanut butter?
16.3-ounce plastic jars with the following UPC and and “best by” dates should be discarded.

Where were these jars sold?
Recalled products were sold in Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin.

  • UPCs: 048001006812 and 048001006782 (found on the jar’s label below the bar code).
  • Best-if-used-by dates: MAY1612LR1, MAY1712LR1, MAY1812LR1, MAY1912LR1, MAY2012LR1 and MAY2112LR1 (found on the jar’s lid).

Is it just the peanut butter or other Skippy products?
Just the peanut butter products listed above. No other Skippy products are currently subject to recall.

Am I down a jar of peanut butter?
No chance! Skippy urges consumers to discard the potentially contaminated jars and contact the company at 1-800-453-3432 for information on the recall and to receive a replacement coupon.

Leading Experts Rethinking Food Allergy Causes

The perplexing world of childhood food allergies is enough to make any parent break out in hives.

But conventional wisdom is now being questioned when it comes to bottle-feeding whole milk to babies or keeping toddlers away from the peanut butter jar.

With an alarming increase in childhood food allergies and record numbers of parents heading to the doctor’s office with concerns that their children are allergic to a long list of foods, a team of leading childhood allergy experts says the way we prevent food allergies is misconceived, The New Yorker reports.

Dr. Hugh Sampson, director of the Jae Food Allergy Institute at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, tells the magazine new research is producing some unexpected findings, mostly that, contrary to popular belief, early exposure to allergies may prevent food allergies later on.

Though he believed for most of his career that children are far less likely to become allergic to problematic foods if they are not exposed to them as infants, Sampson tells The New Yorker research is proving him wrong.

Sampson and Dr. Scott Sicherer, a pediatric allergist also at Mount Sinai, have conducted extensive studies throughout the United States that show that the rate of allergies is rising sharply.

They estimate that 3 to 5 percent of the population is allergic to milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts or seafood, according to the magazine.

“This increase in the incidence of food allergy is real,” Sampson tells The New Yorker, but he adds that he can’t say what is causing the increase, just that he now thinks the conventional approach to preventing food allergies is questionable.

In fact, the Mount Sinai team tells The New Yorker they believe early exposure may actually help prevent food allergies later in life.

Previously, Sampson says, his research in the 1980s looked at whether the problem of allergies could be prevented if mothers continued breast-feeding as long as possible. Laboratory studies reinforced the theory, he tells the magazine.

“From an evolutionary-biology point of view, food allergy makes no sense at all,” co-researcher Sicherer tells The New Yorker. “It seems pretty clear that food allergy is a condition that resulted from the environment we created.”

Now, experts believe, a child becomes tolerant to a variety of food proteins through exposure in the first six months of life and some 80 percent of infants who are allergic to eggs or milk will outgrow the allergy by their teenage years.
