Government Protects Employees Who Watch Porn on the Job

It looks like employees of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) might not be able to get away with murder, but they can get away with downloading and watching massive amounts of pornography while on the job. When word got out that they were doing this, none of the offenders were fired or even reported to or disciplined by their professional associations.

According to Denver-based attorney Kevin Evans, who sued to have as much information on the incidents as possible released, the majority of the employees involved were attorneys, and none of them was fired or reported to the American Bar Association.

Evans is rankled by the situation because these government employees were watching porn on company time, basically being paid by taxpayers to do it. He says that a private practice attorney who deceitfully billed clients like that would not only be kicked out of the American Bar Association and lose his or her license to practice law, but also could also be indicted and prosecuted for fraud.

The government has not exactly been forthcoming about the details of the situation. Just reading about heinous misuse of taxpayer funds upset Evans enough to send him on a search for details. He had to sue to get most of them, which, after a lot of time and effort, included the 24 offenders’ grade, rank, offense and what disciplinary measures were taken, but no names.

“Not one was fired,” Evans told AOL Jobs. “But some were allowed to resign. They received basically nothing more than a slap on the wrist.” One had downloaded so much porn at work his hard drive was full, and he had to burn the porn onto disks, which he stashed around his office.

Evans has been unable to get the SEC to name names, however. The presiding judge stated that “the public has no right to the names of government employees engaged in unlawful activity.”

While Evans believes he’s taken the issue about as far as he can go, he feels his time and effort were worthwhile. “By sheer media attention and public interest, we feel we’ve been successful,” he said. We may not know exactly who bilked American taxpayers for time spent watching porn, but we do know that the SEC is responsible for letting them get away with it.

We also know that it’s not just happening at the SEC. Evans says that since the situation has come to light, he’s received e-mails from employees of many other government agencies claiming that colleagues are watching porn in their offices as well. Your tax dollars at work.

Former TSA Workers Arrested on Child Pornography Charges

The very same U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents that grope and naked body scan you and your children when you fly may also be illegally accessing and sharing child pornography. A recent report by WCVB-TV Boston explains that Andrew Cheever, 33, a former TSA agent from Massachusetts, was recently arrested on child pornography charges — and he is not the only one.

Investigators found that Cheever had been storing and sharing over 10,000 pornographic videos and images involving children on multiple computers, hard drives and external media storage devices. Authorities charged him on two counts of child pornography possession and restricted him from contacting or working at jobs that involve children under the age of 18.

But the Cheever case is just the tip of the iceberg. Earlier this year, former TSA agent Sean Shanahan from Boston Logan International Airport was charged with multiple sex crimes against an underage girl. And in November, Charles Henry Bennett, a former TSA screener at Orlando International Airport, was arrested and charged for molesting a 12-year-old girl and planning to make her his “sex slave”.

These are the types of people that TSA jobs attract these days, especially now that “enhanced” pat downs and naked body scans give perverts access to an unlimited stream of duties that feed their deviant behavior. And even though TSA officials insist that employees must undergo criminal background and credit checks before being hired, the process is obviously not working to keep sexual deviants from molesting both adults and children at U.S. airports.

Current TSA security requirements for passengers actually encourage sexual deviants to fill TSA agent positions because passengers must either submit to a full naked body image scan that, despite what TSA officials say, can be downloaded and saved by agents , or undergo an invasive full-body pat down that involves agents’ “palms and fingers” probing their bodies.

‘Porn Lock’ in UK and France May Lead to Internet Censorship

Just days after France passed legislation requiring Internet service providers to block child-pornography websites, British officials said they want to block all porn on the Web. Critics of both “porn lock” initiatives say they may be the first steps in controlling the Internet in those countries.

Ed Vaizey, Britain’s communications minister, told the Sunday Times the government is considering a plan to restrict pornography websites to protect children from seeing them.

“This is a very serious matter. I think it is very important that it’s the ISPs that some up with solutions to protect children,” Vaizey said.

Vaizey plans to meet with the country’s Internet service providers soon about a proposal that would mean blocking porn sites so children wouldn’t be exposed to them rather than relying on existing parental controls. Customers would have to “opt-in” if they wanted access to pornography sites.

“I’m hoping they will get their acts together so that we don’t have to legislate,” Vaizey said. “But we are keeping an eye on the situation and we will have a new communications bill in the next couple of years.”

Opponents of the measures say the government is using legitimate concerns over kiddie porn and the early sexualization of children who access adult porn online as a way to gain control of the Web. Britain has already had success with measures designed to block kiddie-porn sites.

“It’s like they want to play God on the Internet,” Gilles Lordet, the Paris-based chief editor of Reporters Without Borders, told AOL News today.

“Nobody wants to be seen as fighting an attempt to cut down on kiddie porn or on children watching porn online. But it’s a very slippery slope to more censorship. We know that in a lot of undemocratic countries they start with censoring porn and they move on to other sites,” Lordet said.

Last week, France’s National Assembly passed a bill that is part of the controversial LOPPSI 2 — a law on guidelines and programming for the performance of internal security — allowing the government to filter the Internet without any judicial oversight.

The bill, expected to be approved by the Senate and become law next year, is designed so that the Ministry of the Interior can draw up a blacklist of kiddie-porn sites and tell the ISPs to block them.

Some ISPs in the U.S. reached a more open agreement in 2008 with New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo to purge their servers of child-porn-related newsgroups as well as kiddie-porn websites identified by a regularly updated registry.

But critics of the French bill worry that giving the government unfettered power in making a blacklist could mean increased blocking of other undesirable sites.

“If you can suppress any content on the Internet you can suppress it all,” John Perry Barlow, founder of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, told AOL News today. “What these laws will do is requires ISPs to become censorious.”

During a parliamentary debate last month in the U.K., Claire Perry, a Conservative MP who wants stricter Internet controls, said that 60 percent of 9- to 19-year-olds had watched porn online, calling the Web “the Wild West.” Perry also said that only 15 percent of computer-literate parents knew how to use filters to block access to certain sites, the Guardian reported today.

Such statistics are hard to argue with, but experts say the larger picture is more complicated.

“Anytime you see countries move in the same way restricting access to information, it may be with the best of intentions,” said Erik Sherman, a BNET analyst. “But suddenly it becomes about other things. And look clearly at the U.K.’s plan to let people ‘opt-in’ for porn sites. Opting in is a way to register people. Think about that.”

HIV-Positive Porn Actor Wants Mandatory Condoms

An HIV-positive porn actor has identified himself, speaking out in favor of mandatory condom use for adult film performers.

Derrick Burts, 24, tested positive in October at a clinic in Sherman Oaks, Calif. He was known publicly as “Patient Zeta” after the diagnosis.

He had worked in gay films under the name Derek Chambers and in straight films as Cameron Reid, the Los Angeles Times reports. In the months before he tested positive, Burts said, he contracted chlamydia, gonorrhea and herpes.

“It’s very dangerous,” he said of acting in adult films. “It should be required that you wear a condom on the set.”

He also said he wished he knew more about the risks of getting a sexually transmitted disease.

“Making $10,000 or $15,000 for porn isn’t worth your life,” he said. “Performers need to be educated.”
