Mental Health Disorders Mean High-Profit Business For Prescription Drug Cartel

The Merriam-Webster dictionary online defines “ethical” as “involving or expressing moral approval or disapproval (ethical judgments); conforming to accepted standards of conduct.” Based on a new study, it seems as though the American Psychiatric Association (APA) may need a little refresher course in ethics.

According to researchers led by Lisa Cosgrove, associate professor of clinical psychology at the University of Massachusetts Boston, the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, which is published by the APA,is riddled with financial conflicts of interest, ABC News reported.

The 900-page manual on mental health, known as DSM-5, is set for publication in May 2013. Known as the industry’s bible, it details the recommended treatment modalities – many of them pharmacological – for all known psychological disorders.

But Cosgrove and her team, which published their findings in the journal PLoS Medicine, say it’s the drug treatments that raised red flags because70 percentof the DSM-5 task force members reported having ties to Big Pharma – and that’s even after the APA required task force members to reveal their drug company connections following the publication of DSM-4 in 1994.

Looks like the disclosure requirement didn’t do much to shore up integrity.

“Organizations like the APA have embraced transparency too quickly as the solution,” Cosgrove said. “Our data show that transparency has not changed the dynamic.”

Introduction Of New Diet Drug Misses Base Cause Of American Obesity Epidemic

This week, in an act of desperation to turn back the tide of the obesity epidemic that now affects almost seven out of every 10 Americans and more than 80 percent of some populations (African-American women), the advisory committee to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) voted 20 to 2 to recommend approval of Qnexa, a “new” obesity drug that is simply the combination of two older medications, phentermine (the “phen” of phen-fen”) and topiramate (Topamax).

It is a misguided effort at best, and a dangerous one at worst. Mounting evidence proves that the solution to lifestyle and diet-driven obesity-related illnesses including heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and even cancer won’t be found at the bottom of a prescription bottle.

By 2020, more than 50 percent of the U.S. adult population will have Type 2 diabetes or prediabetes, with annual costs approaching $500 billion. By 2030, total annual economic costs of cardiovascular disease in the U.S. are predicted to exceed $1 trillion. By 2030, globally we will spend $47 trillion, yes trillion, to address the effects of chronic lifestyle-driven disease.

Prescription medication for lifestyle disease has failed to bend the obesity and disease curve. Statins have been recently found to increase the risk of diabetes in women by 48 percent. And large data reviews by independent international scientists from the Cochrane Collaborative found that statins only work to prevent second heart attacks, not first heart attacks, which means they are not helpful and most likely harmful for 75 percent of those who take them.

Avandia, the No. 1 blockbuster drug for Type 2 diabetes, has caused nearly 200,000 deaths from heart attacks since it was introduced in 1999. The drug was designed to prevent complications of diabetes, yet heart attacks are the very disease that kills most Type 2 diabetics. In 2011, the FDA issued stricter prescribing guidelines for Avandia, but the drug is still on the market.

The large ACCORD trial found in more than 10,000 diabetics that intensive blood-sugar lowering with medication and insulin actually led to more heart attacks and deaths.

Something is deeply wrong with our medical approach.

The problem of chronic disease, including obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, is not a medication deficiency, but a problem with what we put at the end of our fork.

The emperor truly has no clothes. Why would good men and women of science vote to approve a medication for a condition that is a social disease and requires a social cure? The social, environmental, economic, and political conditions of America and increasingly the global community have created an obesogenic environment.

Clearly we need to do something. But it is not better medication or surgery or more angioplasties and stents, which have no proven benefit in more than 90 percent of those who receive them. The data show they work for acute coronary events, but not stable angina or blockages.

We continue to pay for expensive treatments for chronic disease, despite the fact that they don’t work, while insurance does not pay for nutrition counseling unless the patient has kidney failure or diabetes.

Chronic disease is a food-borne illness. We ate our way into this mess and we must eat our way out.

Ron Paul Stands Up For Raw Milk And Health Freedom

In a recent town hall meeting in New Hampshire, Presidential candidate Dr. Ron Paul spoke on Health Freedom and the Constitutional rights of Americans to buy and sell natural food, like raw milk, which hasn’t been tainted with chemicals, hormones, or cooked until completely void of nutrients.

Ron Paul represents the polar opposite of nearly every politician in control of legislation today. Most politicians accept legal bribes (called lobbying) from the big pharmaceutical companies that lead the proliferation of prescription drugs in America, the third leading cause of death. Not only has Ron Paul introduced legislation to repeal the FDA’s prohibition of interstate sales of raw milk, he consistently reminds everyone that Government should not have control over our food choices.

The loudest applause came when Ron Paul spoke about the regulations on raw milk sales. He explained how the FDA does not “take care of us” but rather interferes with our choices by collaborating with special interests. It’s the drug and insurance companies that keep a stranglehold on the American chronic care management system, which doesn’t cure anything, but rather treats symptoms with dangerous pharmaceuticals.

The real reason the FDA bans raw milk sales and shipping is because pasteurized, homogenized and rBGH (hormone-laden) milk poses horrible dangers to the public, and when diseases and outbreaks rise up, like with chicken and beef, the FDA will use raw milk as their scapegoat, saying they tried “to contain and limit its distribution.” It’s also all about competition, and raw food enthusiasts and nutrition experts all know that live food keeps you healthy, and dead food makes you sick.

Romney doesn’t care about the poor. Gingrich insidiously fueled the foreclosure crisis. Rick Perry would restart the war in Iraq. Santorum wants to bomb Iran and start a new 4 trillion dollar war. Obama appointed the Vice President of Monsanto to run the FDA. Only Ron Paul speaks about personal freedoms, health freedom, natural food, the right to supplements, and the right to know if your food has been genetically modified with pesticides, antibiotics, growth hormones, and other cancer causing chemicals.

Timeline Of Celebrities Killed By Big Pharma

The recent death of pop icon Whitney Houston has once again sparked worldwide awareness of the fragility of human life, and how easily it can slip away in an instant. But what Houston’s death has also brought to the forefront is the reality that, under the auspices of treating disease, FDA-approved pharmaceutical drugs are a primary cause of death in the U.S., as well as within the entertainment industry.

Over the years, NaturalNews has covered the deaths of numerous celebrities, singers, actors, and cultural icons that met their fates because of prescription drug overdoses. Some of these individuals died as a result of misusing pharmaceutical drugs, while others were literally out of their minds as a result of taking them, which made them particularly prone to the careless and even suicidal behaviors that ultimately led to their deaths.

Below we have put together a short timeline of celebrity deaths caused by pharmaceutical drugs. While we recognize that some of these individuals deliberately misused both prescription and illicit drugs, resulting in their deaths, some of them were arguably heavily influenced by these highly-addictive drugs in the first place, which caused them to further abuse dangerous, but legal, prescription drugs, and often under the guidance of their doctors.

• 1962: American actress, singer, and model Marilyn Monroe reportedly died of a barbiturate overdose, a class of drugs that artificially induces relaxation and sleep. Though the precise details of her death are still disputed, her death was officially declared to be “acute barbiturate poisoning.”

• 1968: Famous American actor Nick Adams, a good friend of James Dean and Elvis Presley, reportedly died of an overdose of barbiturates as well. His mysterious death was officially certified as “accidental-suicidal and undetermined,” but high levels of sedatives were found in his blood.

• 1977: Iconic singer Elvis Presley had a long history of prescription drug abuse, having developed an addiction to stimulants during his days in the military. His personal physician, Dr. George Nichopoulos, reportedly supplied pills to Presley during his singing career “without concern for his health,” which eventually led to his overdose-induced death.

• 1994: Kurt Cobain, former lead singer and guitarist of the band Nirvana, reportedly died of a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head that many reports link to a lethal dose of heroin. Like many of the others, Cobain had a history of illicit drug abuse, but upon his death, reports indicated that traces of diazepam, an anti-anxiety medication marketed under the name Valium, was also found in his blood.

• 1997: Famous comedian and actor Chris Farley was found dead in his apartment of an apparent drug overdose. But according to some reports, no illegal narcotics were found on the premesis, while plenty of prescription drugs were found. A later autopsy revealed morphine and cocaine intoxication as the cause of his “accidental” death.

• 2007: Anna Nicole Smith, an American model, actress, and television personality died of an overdose of prescription drugs. There is still much controversy over her doctors’ involvement in her death, as they reportedly wrote her fake prescriptions for sleeping pills, opioid painkillers, and anti-anxiety drugs, all of which contributed to her death.

Whitney Houston Is Yet Another Tragic Loss To The Pharmaceutical Industry

The regretful passing of an American entertainment icon — Whitney Houston — marks yet another sad milestone in the devastating body count of the prescription drug industry. TMZ is now reporting that Whitney Houston was found not with illegal drugs, but prescription drugs that may have killed her or caused her to drown in the bathtub.

Houston had “a plethora of sedatives including Lorazepam, Valium, Xanax, and a sleeping medication that was found in her hotel room,” reports Radar Online.

“The prescription drugs were officially taken into custody by the Beverly Hills Police Department,” the website reported. An autopsy has yet to be performed, and it will reportedly provide more conclusive information about the actual cause of death.

Whitney Houston was also taking Xanax, a psychiatric anti-anxiety drug. According to Fox News, Houston’s family members said she was taking Xanax, a powerful psychtropic drug. As NaturalNews has reported many times, mind-altering drugs are known to cause erratic behavior and suicidal thoughts.
