Antibiotic Use Linked To Breast Cancer

In the Pink month – the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we publish a report below to share with readers a recent study which suggests that taking antibiotics may increase risk of breast cancer.

The study published in Sept 15, 2010 issue of Pharmacoepidemiology and Drug Safety showed a slightly increased risk of breast cancer in women who ever used antibiotics compared with those who did not use.

Sergentanis T.N. and colleagues from the University of Athens in Athens, Greece, authors of the study, said some, but not all early studies had already found an association between use of antibiotics and elevated breast cancer risk. 

For the study, the researchers identified five case-control studies involving 13,069 cases and 73,920 controls from major medical databases like Medline, Cochrane, and EMBASE databases, which they believed were eligible for their meta-analysis.

They found those who ever used antibiotics were 17.5 percent more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer. A meta-regression analysis also showed a borderline dose-response effect of antibiotics on the risk of breast cancer.

The researchers concluded “this is a finding with potentially important public health implications, which should be further examined in the literature.”

One explanation is that women who have ever used antibiotics may have weaker immunity against cancer.  It is well known by some researchers that a person’s immunity can be a big determinant for his cancer risk.

Early in 2003, Velicer C.M. and colleagues from the University of Washington cited a hypothesis proposed by others in Cancer Causes & Control, which states that antibiotics destroy intestinal microflora that would otherwise metabolise phytochemicals from edible plants into compounds that may protect against cancer.

Velicer et al. extended the hypothesis by proposing that antibiotic use affects breast cancer risk through their effects on immune and inflammatory factors such as cytokines, T lymphocytes, prostaglandins and matrix metalloproteinases, in addition to their disruption of phytochemical and estrogen metabolism involving the intestinal microflora.

The researchers suggested that some mechanisms may boost breast cancer risk while others may increase the risk depending upon the type of antibiotic used.

Celiver et al said in their study report that an early study linked long-term use of antibiotic for recurrent urinary-tract infections with increased risk of breast cancer.

Breast cancer is expected to be diagnosed in more than 175,000 women and kill 50,000 each year in the United States, according to the National Cancer Institute.  one in eight women in the country is expected to develop the disease in their lifetime.

Prevent Heart Disease with Quality Multivitamins

Taking quality multivitamins is a great way to supplement one’s diet with high doses of nutrients that are often lacking in modern-day food. And a new study out of Sweden has found that women who take multivitamins help to reduce their overall risk of cardiovascular disease and heart attack.

For ten years, Dr. Susanne Rautiainen and her colleagues from the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm monitored 31,671 women with no history of heart disease and 2,262 women with heart disease to observe their progression in overall health. Roughly 60 percent of women from both groups took some kind of dietary supplement.

At the completion of the study, 3.4 percent of the women who had no heart disease to begin with, but who did not take any dietary supplements, ended up having heart attacks. In contrast, only 2.6 percent of women from the same group who did take a multivitamin had heart attacks. Statistically, the multivitamin group exhibited a 27 percent less chance of having a heart attack.

Additionally, women who began the study without heart disease but who had been taking a multivitamin for less than five years had an 18 percent reduced risk of heart disease compared to the non-multivitamin group, while those who had been taking multivitamins for ten years or more had a 41 percent reduced risk of developing the disease.

The study does not explain what type of multivitamins and supplements the women were taking, so it is difficult to ascertain their quality. Multivitamins made with whole food vitamins are far superior to the synthetic varieties commonly sold at drug stores and big-box retailers, and they work best as part of an overall healthy diet and lifestyle.

Green Leafy Vegetables Reduce Risk Of Diabetes

In an analysis of six studies into fruit and vegetable intake, only food including spinach and cabbage was found to have a significant positive effect.

A portion and a half a day was found to cut type 2 diabetes risk by 14%, the British Medical Journal (BMJ) reports.

But experts urged people to continue to aim for five portions of fruit and vegetables a day.

The researchers from Leicester University reviewed data from the studies of 220,000 adults in total.

They found that eating more fruit and vegetables in general was not strongly linked with a smaller chance of developing type 2 diabetes but “there was a general trend in that direction”.

Yet when it came to green leafy vegetables, which the researchers said also includes broccoli and cauliflower, the risk reduction was significant.

The team calculated that a daily dose of 106g reduced the risk of diabetes by 14% – a UK “portion” is classed as 80g.

It is not clear why green leafy vegetables may have a protective effect but one reason may be they are high in antioxidants, such as vitamin C and another theory is that they contain high levels of magnesium.

Study leader Professor Melanie Davies, professor of diabetic medicine at the University of Leicester, said the message to eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day remains an important one.

But she added: “People like very specific health messages.

“We know that intake of fruit and vegetables is important, but this study suggests that green leafy vegetables seem to be particularly important in terms of preventing diabetes.”

The team are now planning a study in people at high risk of developing the condition to see if increasing their intake of vegetables like spinach and kale can help to reduce their chances of being diagnosed with diabetes.

Fruit and veg

In 2008/09, the National Diet Nutrition Survey showed that, although fruit and vegetable intake has risen over the past decade, only a third of men and women eat the recommended five-a-day.

In an accompanying editorial in the BMJ, Professor Jim Mann from the University of Otago in New Zealand, stressed that the message of increasing overall fruit and vegetable intake must not be lost “in a plethora of magic bullets,” even though green leafy vegetables clearly can be included as one of the daily portions.

Dr Iain Frame, director of research at Diabetes UK said: “We already know that the health benefits of eating vegetables are far-reaching but this is the first time that there has been a suggested link specifically between green leafy vegetables and a reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes.”

But he warned the evidence was limited and it was too early to isolate green leafy vegetables and present them alone as a method to cut the chances of developing the condition.

“We would be concerned if focusing on certain foods detracted from the advice to eat five portions of fruits and vegetables a day, which has benefits in terms of reducing heart disease, stroke, some cancers and obesity as well as type 2 diabetes.”

Diabetes UK is currently funding research into whether fermentable carbohydrates found in foods such as asparagus, garlic, chicory and Jerusalem artichokes could help weight loss and prevent Type 2 diabetes.
