5 Skills EVERY Job Seeker Needs

October 5, 2011 by admin

AOL Jobs

By: Tony Morrison

Ah, the skills section. It’s on resumes, applications, and social media profiles. It’s what most employers look to first when considering an employee. It sums up every job candidate’s experience, expertise and career.

What’s in your skills section? Everyone’s different in some way. Your skills depend on your location, your age, both your personal and professional experiences, your industry, and you as a person. Each skill is important and will ultimately lead you to your ideal job.

However, there are skills that will never make it into your skills section, even though they are quite possibly the most important skills you’ll ever need. These are the skills, sometimes called “soft skills,” that every job seeker must have in order to get (and keep) their dream jobs.

A successful job seeker needs to have the ability to:

1. Introduce themselves

Whether it’s in the middle of a crowded room or online, a successful job seeker needs to be able to introduce themselves. Today, 60 percent of jobs are filled through referrals. That means that job seekers who rely solely on job postings are out of luck. Put yourself out there: Introduce yourself, network and meet your next job lead.

2. Know and articulate their qualifications

It’s one thing to have skills, goals or experience, but a successful job seeker owns them. To get that job, you need to know your qualifications and communicate them effectively to potential employers.

3. Shake hands properly

You might not have attended cotillion as a child, but good interpersonal communication and etiquette are common courtesy. A good handshake and sincere smile is an important display of respect and the foundation of any solid introduction. When your handshake is like a limp fish or the dreaded death grip, it almost subliminally tells a potential employer or networking contact about your character.

4. Be punctual or early (but not too early)

We all know someone who is habitually late (if you don’t know that person, it’s probably you). They layer on the excuses, usually summing up with a careless statement such as, “I just run on my own time.” It’s irritating to your friends and unacceptable to employers.

If you are habitually late, turn the clocks forward; add extra minutes to your commute — do whatever you can do to break the late cycle. Plan to arrive early enough to get in the building and announce yourself for your meeting. A good rule is to arrive at your interview and all on-site meetings early, but not more than 10 to 15 minutes early, and you should be prepared with all the important material needed for your meeting.

5. Know how to dress

Whether you are looking for your first-ever job or your 15th, you need to evaluate your work attire. When interviewing, a good rule to follow is to dress slightly nicer than you would for the actual job. Invest in timeless, quality pieces so that you’re not stuck with last year’s fashions. It might be superficial, but dressing well is a skill that every successful job seeker has.

Indiana Latest State To Drop Handwriting Requirement

BBC News

Indiana is the latest US state which will not require its schoolchildren to learn joined-up, or cursive, writing.

But students will have to learn basic typing skills, which education officials say are more useful in the modern employment world.

The move is part of the Common Core State Standards Initiative, which aims to ensure consistency in US education and makes no mention of handwriting.

But critics say writing well is a vital skill for life and builds character.

US schoolchildren currently learn to write with joined-up writing from about the age of eight.

But under the core standards – which were released in June 2010 and have been adopted by nearly all US states – there is no requirement for them to do so.

Euro Scientist Develop Robot That Expresses And Detects Emotions

Telegraph

By: Heidi Blake

The humanoid machine, called Nao, hunches its shoulders when it feels sad and raises its arms for a hug when it feels happy.

It has been designed to mimic the emotional skills of a one-year-old child and is capable of forming bonds with people who treat it with kindness.

Nao is able to detect human emotions through a series of non-verbal “clues”, such as body-language and facial expressions, and becomes more adept at reading a person’s mood through prolonged interaction.

It uses video cameras to detect how close a person comes and sensors to work out how tactile they are.

The wiring of the robot’s “brain”, designed to mirror the neural network of the human mind, allows it to remember its interactions with different people and memorise their faces.

This understanding, along with a set of basic rules about what is “good” and “bad” for it, allow the robot to indicate whether it is “sad” or “happy”.

The actions used to display each emotion are preprogrammed but Nao decides by itself which feeling to display, and when.

“We’re modelling the first years of life,” said Lola Cañamero, a computer scientist at the University of Hertfordshire who led the project to create Nao’s emotions.

“We are working on non-verbal cues and the emotions are revealed through physical postures, gestures and movements of the body rather than facial or verbal expression.”

Cañamero believes that robots will act as human companions in future.

“Those responses make a huge difference for people to be able to interact naturally with a robot,” she said.

“If people can behave naturally around their robot companions, robots will be better-accepted as they become more common in our lives.”

Nao was developed as part of a project called Feelix Growing, funded by the European commission.

Though some scientists believe that robots could be used to help around the house, or to care for the elderly, in the future, others have warned that the humanoids could spin out of control and attack their owners by accident.

Resume Mistakes That Keep You Jobless

August 3, 2010 by admin

AOL News

by Barbara Safani

Think resume typos are no big deal? Last year, Accountemps, a temporary staffing firm, interviewed 150 senior executives from some of the nation’s largest companies. Forty percent of the respondents said that just one typo on a resume would cause the candidate to be eliminated. Thirty-six percent said it would take just two mistakes before the resume was put in the “no” pile. Here are some of my favorite resume bloopers I found via Job Mob, Resume Hell, and Zimbio. Obviously spell-check isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

  • Objective: Seeking a party-time position with room for advancement
  • Professional headline: 1 year old marketing executive
  • Achievement: Planned new corporate facility at $3M over budget.
  • Explanation of employment gap: career break in 1999 to renovate my house
  • References: Referees available upon request
  • Skills: I am a rabid typist
  • Strengths: Impersonal skills
  • Hobbies: Enjoy cooking Chinese and Italians
  • Education: College: August 1880 to May 1984
  • Cover letter: I would like to assure you that I am a hardly working person.

And just how much information on a resume is too much?

  • Objective: To have my skills and ethics challenged on a regular basis
  • Personal Information: Married, eight children, prefer frequent travel
  • Language Skills: Exposure to German for two years-but many words are inappropriate for business
  • Reason for leaving last job: the owner gave new meaning to the word paranoia
  • Achievements: Nominated for prom queen
  • Education: Finished eighth in a class of ten
  • Interests: Gossiping
  • Awards: National record for eating 45 eggs in two minutes
  • References: Bill, Tom, Eric – but I don’t know their phone numbers
  • Salary: The higher the better
  • Cover letter: Please disregard the attached resume; it’s totally outdated

I’ve blogged about resume typos before, but here are a few more suggestions for avoiding them.

  • Print out a copy of the resume to proofread. It is easier to catch mistakes on the printed page than on the computer screen.
  • Set the resume aside for a few hours and come back to it later. This may help you spot new typos.
  • Ask three people to read the resume. Among the three of them, one is bound to catch an error.

Preparing For The World’s End

Asylum

By Wendy Rose Gould

If the proverbial you-know-what hit the global fan, would you be prepared? The answer to that question is most likely a big, fat no.

After all, it’s hard to develop life skills (e.g., growing/storing your own food, filtering water) while playing myriad video games or scrounging the Internet for funny videos to post on Facebook.

Turns out, though, that while you may not be concerned about mass chaos and world destruction, a growing number of people are.
