Radiation Treatments Create Cancer Cells 30 Times More Potent Than Regular Cancer Cells

In a groundbreaking new study just published in the peer reviewed journal Stem Cells, researchers at UCLA’s Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center Department of Oncology found that, despite killing half of all tumor cells per treatment, radiation treatments on breast cancer transforms other cancer cells into cancer stem cells which are vastly more treatment-resistant than normal cancer cells. The new study is yet another blow to the failed and favored mainstream treatment paradigm of trying to cut out, poison out or burn out cancer symptoms (tumors) instead of actually curing cancer.

Senior study author Dr. Frank Pajonk, associate professor of radiation oncology at the Jonsson Center, reported that induced breast cancer stem cells (iBCSC) “were generated by radiation-induced activation of the same cellular pathways used to reprogram normal cells into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS) in regenerative medicine.” Pjonk, who is also a scientist with the Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regenerative Medicine at UCLA, added “It was remarkable that these breast cancers used the same reprogramming pathways to fight back against the radiation treatment.”

In the new study, Pajonk and his team irradiated normal non-stem cell cancer cells and placed them into mice. Through a unique imaging system, the researchers observed the cells differentiate into iBCSC in response to radiation treatments. Pjonk reported that the newly generated cells were remarkably similar to non-irradiated breast cancer stem cells. The team of researchers also found that the radiation-induced stem cells had a more than 30-fold increased ability to form tumors compared with non-irradiated breast cancer cells.

Regenerative Medicine May Lead To Lower Health Care Costs

Stem cell therapy may hold the key to reducing soaring health care costs brought on by an aging population and provide drug companies a cure to their ailing outlook, a panel of industry and government officials said Thursday.

The panel discussed the outlook for the field, known as regenerative medicine, at the final day of the Stem Cell Meeting on the Mesa, an annual meeting devoted to the field held in La Jolla.

Regenerative medicine seeks to cure diseases or injuries by replacing damaged tissues with healthy ones that integrate into the body. The discussion was moderated by Greg Lucier, chairman and CEO of Carlsbad-based Life Technologies, the meeting’s lead sponsor. Life Technologies sells a wide variety of biological supplies and medical instruments used in regenerative medicine.

“The world of pharmaceuticals is waking up to the fact that this is the next frontier,” Lucier said.

Much of the soaring cost of health care is a product of its success in saving lives from diseases such as cardiovascular illnesses, but not restoring patients to full health, said Gil Van Bokkelen, CEO of Athersys Inc.

“If you look at the progress we’ve made over the past few decades in terms of improving survival rates for patients that have suffered a heart attack, it’s been phenomenally successful, but it’s also led to a huge problem, because now we have so many more people that are surviving that we also have a greater number of people surviving that are actually progressing to congestive heart failure,” said Van Bokkelen, also chairman of the Alliance for Regenerative Medicine, an industry group.

Fat Cell Hope for Heart Attacks

Fat cells taken from the waistline could hold promise in treating heart attacks, say researchers.

A pilot study on 14 patients in the Netherlands and Spain found that stem cells extracted from fat and delivered to the heart appeared to boost heart function after a heart attack.

Doctors now plan to extend the study to over 300 heart attack patients at 35 clinics in Europe.

A UK heart charity said the approach was “promising”.

The research, which was presented at the American Heart Association’s annual conference, followed 14 patients who had suffered a severe heart attack.

Doctors used liposuction to take fat from the abdomen of each patient, extracted millions of stem cells, then delivered these to the heart within 24 hours.

Ten of the patients were given stem cells; while four had a “dummy” treatment.

Six months on, the patients given stem cells had a lower amount of damaged muscle in their hearts – about 15% compared with 25% in the control group.

Lead author, Eric Duckers, of the Erasmus University Medical Centre in Rotterdam, Netherlands, said: “The study suggests that these cells can be safely obtained and infused inside the hearts of patients following an acute heart attack.”

Professor Jeremy Pearson of the British Heart Foundation, said small clinical trials in the last few years had tested whether stem cells from bone marrow could help the heart recover after a heart attack, “with some promising results”.

But he called for further research.

“This pilot study shows for the first time that stem cells from a patient’s fat tissue may be similarly beneficial, indicating a potential new and more convenient source of stem cells,” he said.

“However, since we still know very little about the way these cells could help to repair the damaged heart, there needs to be more research to understand what the stem cells actually do.

“That will help us to understand more about how they could be used for real patient benefit.”

The results of the study, known as Apollo, were not statistically significant, possibly because of its small size.

Researchers now plan a larger trial which will look at the treatment in more detail.
