“If you’re going to consume whey protein drinks, make sure it’s not artificially flavored or colored. The whey should come from cows not treated with growth hormones either. Skip GNC – try a health food store first.” –KTRN

Whey protein is the perfect food for building muscle, losing excess weight and supporting good health. It provides a more absorbable source of protein than any other sourceand is super-easy to digest. No wonder it is the #1 recommended source of protein for everyone, especially bodybuilders and those who are lactose-intolerant.

For athletes and body builders, there may be further good news. Natural antioxidants, such as those found in whey protein, provide protection against myoblastic toxicity and muscle damage caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) during heavy exercise. Recent studies reported by Green Med Info report that “whey protein improved the antioxidant capacity against acute oxidative stress …and may serve as an alternative source of antioxidants for prevention of athletic injuries caused by ROS”.

Where Does Whey Protein Come From?
Whey protein is the globular protein that is a by-product of cheese production. It is one of nature’s simplest foods yet one of the highest sources of protein. You can even make your own whey protein by setting a jar of raw milk on the counter at room temperature for a couple of days and let nature do the rest. The milk naturally changes into curds (which can be pressed to form cheese) and the liquid whey can be strained off.

Whey contains all the soluble ingredients found in milk, such as lactose, minerals and lactalbumin, but without most of the fat, which has been removed with the curds.

For convenience, whey protein is dried and sold in powder form. It is very easily reconstituted by adding water. Some drying processes apply high heat to the whey, similar to the pasteurizing process of milk. The whey is denatured to create a protein gel, but this process can destroy many of the whey minerals and vitamins and it can cause allergies. That’s why you should always opt for getting your whey from a source that does low temperature processing.

20 Things You Didn’t Know About Vitamin D

1. The flu risk is profoundly reduced by sunlight and vitamin D optimization. One study showed that a group of 100 women who took vitamin D supplementation reduced their risk of winter flu to zero, compared to 24 cases of flu in another group of 100 who were given a placebo. There is no reason to ever have a flu pandemic.

2. There is compelling evidence that autism is a vitamin D-deficiency disease.

3. Melanoma is not caused by sunlight exposure. One study showed that those people who always used sunscreens to stay out in the sun longer had 8.7 times the risk of melanoma as those who never used sunscreens.

4. The risk of prostate cancer may be reduced as much as 80% by sunlight exposure.

5. Breast cancer risk is reduced up to 65% with sunlight exposure.

6. Low blood levels of vitamin D are closely correlated with obesity.

7. Sunlight is the “drug-free” antidepressant. Depression is remarkably reduced by sunlight and light therapy.

8. Tanning-bed use profoundly increases both vitamin D levels and bone strength.

9. Ovarian cancer is much greater in northern states than in southern states. Is sunlight exposure and vitamin D the answer?

10. Colon cancer risk is predicted by lack of exposure to sunlight.

Will Washington’s Failures Lead To Second American Revolution?

Investors Business Daily

By: Ernest S. Christian

The Internet is a large-scale version of the “Committees of Correspondence” that led to the first American Revolution — and with Washington’s failings now so obvious and awful, it may lead to another.

People are asking, “Is the government doing us more harm than good? Should we change what it does and the way it does it?”

Pruning the power of government begins with the imperial presidency.

Too many overreaching laws give the president too much discretion to make too many open-ended rules controlling too many aspects of our lives. There’s no end to the harm an out-of-control president can do.

Bill Clinton lowered the culture, moral tone and strength of the nation — and left America vulnerable to attack. When it came, George W. Bush stood up for America, albeit sometimes clumsily.

Barack Obama, however, has pulled off the ultimate switcheroo: He’s diminishing America from within — so far, successfully.

He may soon bankrupt us and replace our big merit-based capitalist economy with a small government-directed one of his own design.

He is undermining our constitutional traditions: The rule of law and our Anglo-Saxon concepts of private property hang in the balance. Obama may be the most “consequential” president ever.

The Wall Street Journal’s steadfast Dorothy Rabinowitz wrote that Barack Obama is “an alien in the White House.”

His bullying and offenses against the economy and job creation are so outrageous that CEOs in the Business Roundtable finally mustered the courage to call him “anti-business.” Veteran Democrat Sen. Max Baucus blurted out that Obama is engineering the biggest government-forced “redistribution of income” in history.

Fear and uncertainty stalk the land. Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke says America’s financial future is “unusually uncertain.”

A Wall Street “fear gauge” based on predicted market volatility is flashing long-term panic. New data on the federal budget confirm that record-setting deficits in the $1.4 trillion range are now endemic.

Obama is building an imperium of public debt and crushing taxes, contrary to George Washington’s wise farewell admonition: “cherish public credit … use it as sparingly as possible … avoiding likewise the accumulation of debt … bear in mind, that towards the payment of debts there must be Revenue, that to have Revenue there must be taxes; that no taxes can be devised, which are not … inconvenient and unpleasant … .”

Opinion polls suggest that in the November mid-term elections, voters will replace the present Democratic majority in Congress with opposition Republicans — but that will not necessarily stop Obama.

A President Obama intent on achieving his transformative goals despite the disagreement of the American people has powerful weapons within reach. In one hand, he will have a veto pen to stop a new Republican Congress from repealing ObamaCare and the Dodd-Frank takeover of banks.

In the other, he will have a fistful of executive orders, regulations and Obama-made fiats that have the force of law.

Under ObamaCare, he can issue new rules and regulations so insidiously powerful in their effect that higher-priced, lower-quality and rationed health care will quickly become ingrained, leaving a permanent stain.

Under Dodd-Frank, he and his agents will control all credit and financial transactions, rewarding friends and punishing opponents, discriminating on the basis of race, gender and political affiliation. Credit and liquidity may be choked by bureaucracy and politics — and the economy will suffer.

He and the EPA may try to impose by “regulatory” fiats many parts of the cap-and-trade and other climate legislation that failed in the Congress.

And by executive orders and the in terrorem effect of an industrywide “boot on the neck” policy, he can continue to diminish energy production in the United States.

By the trick of letting current-law tax rates “expire,” he can impose a $3.5 trillion 10-year tax increase that damages job-creating capital investment in an economy struggling to recover. And by failing to enforce the law and leaving America’s borders open, he can continue to repopulate America with unfortunate illegals whose skill and education levels are low and whose political attitudes are often not congenial to American-style democracy.

A wounded rampaging president can do much damage — and, like Caesar, the evil he does will live long after he leaves office, whenever that may be.

The overgrown, un-pruned power of the presidency to reward, punish and intimidate may now be so overwhelming that his re-election in 2012 is already assured.

Cops Hold Down Boy for Flu Shot

The Intelligencer

By Shelley Hanson

It took the strength of two sheriff’s deputies to keep a middle schooler still enough to receive a shot of the swine flu, or H1N1, vaccine at a recent clinic.

During a regular Wheeling-Ohio County Health Board meeting Tuesday, health department Administrator Howard Gamble told board members about the student’s attempt to flee Wheeling Middle School during a vaccination clinic held there last Friday.

He noted the boy’s mother could not bear to watch the scene and left the gymnasium. Out of apparent fear of receiving the injection, the student ran out of the building. The school’s resource officer, Ohio County Sheriff’s Deputy John Haglock, coaxed the boy back inside. Once at the shot station, however, Haglock apparently needed some help keeping the boy still, and another deputy assisted.

“He tried to run. I looked over and saw two sheriff’s deputies holding a kid down,” Gamble said. “Mom took off, she couldn’t take it. You had one nurse with the needle, two deputies holding him, one nurse is grabbing hands – because that’s what they want to do, to go after the needle. And that’s the last thing you want.”

Gamble said as soon as the nurse gave the boy his injection and told him he was done, he hopped up like nothing had happened.

“For the most part they go very easy. As far as the shots, every once in awhile you have to hold down one or two – but that’s why mom is there or dad is there,” Gamble said.

He added after the meeting that Friday’s incident was the only time Ohio County deputies have held a student during a shot.

“They’re mostly there for parking and directions. They also know the kids. … They were our first line of contact when setting up the clinics,” Gamble said.

Neither Sheriff Pat Butler nor Haglock could be reached for comment. A sheriff’s department official said Haglock is on vacation for the next two weeks.

During a clinic Tuesday at Bridge Street Middle School, similar scenes took place – though not quite as dramatic and not involving officers of the law. A couple sets of parents could be seen keeping their children from wiggling away while a nurse quickly administered the vaccine.

Ten-year-old Austin Price, the son of Jennifer and Josh Price, decided to take the shot standing up and with no assistance from his mom or dad. He even smiled for a photograph.

And on a scale of 1-10, how painful was the shot?

Martial Arts – Fighting Arthritis

The traditional Chinese exercise of Tai Chi can relieve the pain of arthritis of the knee, according to a new study. After a 12-week course of Tai Chi, people also had less difficulty with everyday tasks such as using the stairs.
What do we know already?

Osteoarthritis of the knee is very common in older adults. Among those over the age of 55, an estimated 10 percent have frequent knee pain caused by this joint disease, which can also lead to stiffness, limited movement, and a decreased quality of life.

Many people rely on painkillers to cope with the pain of osteoarthritis. Although exercise and physiotherapy can help, the improvements are often modest. However, specialists think Tai Chi is one type of exercise that might be particularly helpful.

Tai Chi features slow, rhythmic movements designed to bring about mental relaxation and enhance balance, strength, and flexibility. For people with osteoarthritis of the knee, this mind-body focus might improve their physical symptoms as well as helping them cope better mentally. Researchers have done a long-term study to learn more.
What does the new study say?

The study compared two groups of people aged 55 or older. One group met twice weekly for Tai Chi classes. The other group met twice weekly for general wellness instruction and stretching exercises. Both groups were asked to practise their exercises at home for at least 20 minutes a day.

At the end of 12 weeks, people in the Tai Chi group had a 75 percent drop in their pain, on average, and a 72 percent improvement in their ability to do everyday tasks (such as using stairs). People in the wellness and stretching group also reported improvements, but these were much lower than in the Tai Chi group.

The researchers used questionnaires to score people’s symptoms, as well as their mental state, quality of life, and other indicators of wellbeing. Besides doing better on pain and physical function, the Tai Chi group also had greater improvements in depression and overall health.

The researchers followed up with participants 24 and 48 weeks after the start of the study. Less than half of the people in each group still did their exercises at 48 weeks, and much of the differences between the groups had diminished by this time. However, the Tai Chi group continued to have significantly better depression scores, suggesting these improvements might be longer lasting.
