Subway Nutrition Information – It May Not Be As Healthy As You Think

Natural News

By: Tara Green

Subway presents itself as a healthy alternative to eating burgers. Compared to most fast food restaurants, the Subway franchises offer more menu choices which are lower in calories, carbs, fats and sodium. Also, the company website offers more complete nutritional facts than many of the other well-known fast food establishments. However, like many food purveyors, Subway ignores the issue of GMOs and hormones.

Website Information

Subway’s website includes a printable PDF chart listing allergy and food sensitivity information related to 12 categories: eggs, fish, dairy/lactose, peanuts, sesame, shellfish, soybeans, tree nuts, wheat/gluten, sulfites, autolyzed yeast/hydrolyzed vegetable protein and nitrates. If you have multiple food sensitivities, and/or have a restricted diet for other reasons, you will have to look carefully at the chart to find menu items which fit within your personal dietary guidelines. For example, someone seeking to avoid all 12 of the listed allergens can choose between their Veggie Delite Salad and their Roast Beef Salad. Since the company does not specify that the roast beef comes from an organic farm, it is probably safe to assume the cows were fed with hormones. If you eat eggs and fish, and don’t live in Minnesota or Florida, where hydrolyzed vegetable protein is added to fish, or don’t mind a little of this petroleum-derived food additive, you can also order the Tuna Salad.

The more of the above-listed allergens you feel comfortable including in your meal, the more your menu choices expand. If you are OK with consuming wheat, you can add a Veggie Delite Turkey Breast sandwich to your choices. If you want to include dairy and soybean products as well as wheat, you could also order the Meatball Marinara. Not listed on the allergens list, however, is the fact that the marinara sauce contains high fructose corn syrup (HFCS).

This information is provided on a separate PDF page listing ingredients for each menu item, so you have to do a little preliminary research before your meal (although it is to Subway’s credit that they provide the information at all, many chains provide no ingredient lists). Also, you can probably assume that neither the meat nor the cheese is hormone-free. The Subway website does not mention the issue of whether their foods derive from GMOs.

NYC To Invest In 1,000s Of Subway Cameras

August 9, 2010 by admin

August 9th, 2010

NBC New York

Surveillance video from subway stations are getting closer scrutiny recently, as transit police increase efforts to identify and arrest armed robbers and other criminals, a published report said today.

The NYPD asked transit police to pull footage from surveillance cameras some 2000 times last year — ten times more often than five years ago, the Daily News reports.

There are now 3100 cameras installed in city subway stations recording activities, officials said.

Millions of people ride the subway each day, and crime on trains and in stations is at a historically low level with an average of fewer than six felonies a day in the 468-station system, the News reported.

However, as the MTA faces a massive budget shortfall that has led to service cuts and the layoff of hundreds of station agents, some riders worry that crime could be on the rise in unattended stations.

Meantime, the MTA intends to install another 1000 cameras before the end of the year.

TSA Joins NYPD in Subway Baggage Screening

DNA info

By: Jill Colvin

Strangers on their way to and from work Wednesday were surprised to see Transportation Security Administration officials, who usually screen luggage in airports, checking bags at local subway stations.

The TSA launched a pilot partnership with the NYPD Wednesday morning to enhance security on city trains, a spokeswoman for the TSA said. About a dozen stations are covered daily, according to the NYPD.

“While there is no specific threat to mass transit in the United States at this time, TSA and NYPD continuously work together to strengthen overall security efforts and keep the American people safe,” the Administration said in a statement.

At the 40th Street and 8th Avenue entrance to the Port Authority 42nd Street station, TSA staffers began randomly searching passengers at 4 p.m. The searches were expected to last through the evening rush.

Screeners said that passengers are generally happy to comply.

“For the most part, people co-operate fully,” said NYPD Lt. Francis O’Keeffe, who oversaw the operation.

Latifa Ziyad, who is visiting from Boston her three daughters, said she is fine with the searches if they make people safer.

“As long as I’m not getting singled out because I look a certain way, it’s okay,” she said.

Others were willing but eager to get on with their days.

“It’s alright, I’ve got thing to hide,” said accountant Ramone Esmilla, 50, as officers tested his knapsack, which was filled with gym clothes. “But I just want to get out of here and pick up my kid.”

The Administration has nicknamed the teams, which randomly screen passengers’ bags using chemical swabs, “VIPR”s (pronounced viper): Visible Intermodal Prevention and Response.

Subway baggage checks have been routinely conducted by the NYPD since 2005 following the London subway bombings.

TSA spokeswoman Ann Davis would not say how long the Administration expects the program to last, except that mass transit riders should anticipate a TSA presence underground “for the foreseeable future.”

Obama Administration Lobby for Nationalized Transportation System

November 16, 2009 by admin

November 16, 2009

Washington Post

By Joe Stephens and Lena H. Sun

The Obama administration will propose that the federal government take over safety regulation of the nation’s subway and light-rail systems, responding to what it says is haphazard and ineffective oversight by state agencies.

Under the proposal, the U.S. Department of Transportation would do for transit what it does for airlines and Amtrak: set and enforce federal regulations to ensure that millions of passengers get to their destinations safely. Administration officials said the plan will be presented in coming weeks to Congress, which must approve a change in the law.

The proposal would affect every subway and light-rail system in the country, including large systems in Washington, New York, Boston, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Administration officials said they are responding to a growing number of collisions, derailments and worker fatalities on subways — and in particular to the fatal June 22 crash on Metro’s Red Line and failures in oversight that have surfaced in its wake. Those failures have been the subject of an ongoing investigative series in The Washington Post.

“After the [Metro] train crash, we were all sitting around here scratching our heads, saying, ‘Hey, we’ve got to do something about this,’ ” Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in an interview. “And we discovered that there’s not much we could do, because the law wouldn’t allow us to do it.”

Metro spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein said the agency had not seen details of the proposal. “The bottom line is we welcome additional safety oversight with open arms,” she said.

LaHood said he expects the proposal to be welcomed on Capitol Hill, but some Republicans said Saturday night that more federal oversight might not be the answer.

“The administration is right to raise this issue, but federal regulation should only apply to systems that cross state lines,” said Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), who had not been briefed on the plan.

Rep. Frank R. Wolf (R-Va.) said the proposal sounded like a credible way to fix a broken oversight system. “Without seeing the details, it would make sense,” Wolf said. “Some states have done a good job, while others have not. There needs to be consistent safety enforcement.”

Critical details of the plan remain unclear, including how much it would cost, where the money would come from, how the federal government would enforce its rules and whether it is equipped to carry out enhanced oversight. Existing state oversight bodies could remain in place to enforce the new regulations but would need to meet federal standards and gain federal approval.

Safety experts praised the initiative.

“It’s long overdue,” said Kitty Higgins, a member of the National Transportation Safety Board until August. “I applaud the secretary and his team for recognizing the gap in oversight in the current law. I hope that Congress will act on it swiftly.”

An exception to the rule

The federal government long has regulated the safe operation of airplanes, Amtrak and even ferries. But a law passed in 1965 prohibits federal regulation of subways. When that law was put into effect, there were only a handful of subways — Metro wouldn’t open its first line for another 11 years — and lawmakers reasoned that federal oversight would hamper their growth.

As a result, rail transit operates under two very different federal systems offering disparate levels of safety oversight.

Commuter rail systems, such as MARC and the Virginia Railway Express, are subject to a long list of federal regulations and are regularly inspected by federal safety monitors.

Safety oversight of light-rail and subway systems, on the other hand, is delegated to 27 regional bodies controlled by states. Quality varies widely, as does funding and enforcement power. With a few notable exceptions, those agencies tend to be threadbare, averaging less than one staff person per agency, according to federal statistics.

The state organizations have been criticized for lacking expertise and independence. Some rely on the transit systems they oversee to supply their funding. Many lack the legal authority to force transit agencies to grant them access to equipment and documents, and cannot compel transit agencies to correct any deficiencies they identify.

For Metro, the second-busiest subway system in the nation, the monitoring body is the Tri-State Oversight Committee, which has six members but no employees, office or phone number. It also has no direct regulatory authority over Metro.

As it stands, the Transportation Department also cannot direct subway systems to adopt safety recommendations issued by the National Transportation Safety Board.
