Cargill Recalls Potentially Tainted Turkey

Cargill announced a voluntary recall Thursday of 36 million pounds of ground turkey products in connection with a salmonella outbreak that has sickened at least 77 people nationwide, seven of them in Illinois.

The meat producer has also suspended production of ground turkey products at an Arkansas processing plant until it can determine the source of the contamination, Cargill said in a statement.

Of the seven reported illnesses in Illinois, the Illinois Department of Health said at least one person lives in DuPage County. The other cases were reported in Cass, Cook, Madison, Peoria, Will and Williamson counties.

At least one person in Illinois was hospitalized, the health department said. The ages of those infected range from 3 to 60.

The first illness in Illinois tied to this outbreak was reported March 21, while the most recent case was June 29, the health department said.

Salmonella is a food-borne illness characterized by diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps that usually lasts from four to seven days, the health department said. Most people recover on their own, but in some cases the diarrhea is severe enough that the patient requires hospitalization.

Cooking meat such as ground turkey to an internal temperature of at least 165 degrees should kill salmonella bacteria, the health department said.

Keep raw poultry and its juices away from ready-to-eat foods such as fruit or already-cooked food. Wash hands and food preparation surfaces thoroughly after they come into contact with raw poultry.

Customers who purchased turkey products on the recall list should bring them back to the store where they bought them for a full refund, Cargill said. Questions can be directed to Cargill’s customer service department at 1-888-812-1646. The U.S. Department of Agriculture also has a food safety hot line: 1-888-MPHotline.

78 Percent Of Pakistani Children With Polio Were Given Polio Vaccines

In the last year, as Pakistan has lost favor with the US and UNICEF, polio virus has paralyzed increasing numbers of Pakistani youth, casting doubt on the good intentions of those who fight polio. To make matters worse, most of the new cases have occurred in children already vaccinated. Is the US attempting to fight Pakistan by tainting inoculation doses?

The medical data suggests that the vaccine has changed in its efficacy against the disease. Last year, there were 136 cases of infected youth, and 107 of these had been administered multiple polio vaccinations. These figures are the largest the Polio Global Eradication Initiative has seen since 2006, despite heavy treatment in the most affected areas, South Punjab and the Federally Administered Tribal Area (FATA).

Even the more peaceful provinces have suffered. As reported by the Pakistan Daily times, there were 10 cases of polio in Sindh province in the first four months of the year. The article morbidly notes each of the cases, citing the children’s names and the number of vaccinations they had received before the onset of polio virus: “Mohammad Asif, aged 40 months with all his limbs affected… was administered oral anti polio vaccine (OPV) four times… The three and a half years old Ameera… had one of her arms and legs paralyzed… Ameera was first of the confirmed cases of polio during the current year.”

As one might imagine, Pakistani citizens are beginning to suspect foul play. Dr. Mazhar Khamisani, a manager of the health department in Sindh has noted that he has seen Pakistani parents begin to refuse treatment and do so on repeated occasions. And how could we, when confronted with the facts, ask them to do otherwise?

The type of polio vaccine administered may be a significant cause of the problem. There are two main types of polio vaccine, Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) and Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV). The first of these uses dead cells of poliomyelitis. IPV was developed by Jonas Salk before being disseminated throughout the US in the 1950s, to quell the outbreak that was then infecting roughly 22,000 American children each year. Within 20 years, polio was all but forgotten in America.

However, The Polio Global Eradication Initiative chooses to use the second type, Oral Polio Vaccine. OPV was developed by Albert Sabin and runs the virus through a number of animals in order to weaken the strain rather than kill it. The weakened strain is then injected into children, whose immune systems are strong enough to defeat the infection. It is easy to see how treatment could backfire, in cases when the strain has not been weakened enough for human contact.

Despite the fact that it was not widely disseminated in the US, possibly because of the dangers associated with its use, OPV is the vaccine of choice in countries like Pakistan because, soon after vaccination, weakened virus can be found in children’s fecal matter. Immunity can then spread to communal water sources and increase immunity for greater portions of the population. So even if parents refuse OPV treatment, their children may still receive it indirectly through the drinking water.

Historically, there have been cases of outbreak when a weakened strain becomes strong enough to infect rather than immunize. In these cases, OPV is typically replaced by IPV because it is no longer considered safe. But OPV is still the vaccine of choice in Pakistan, even as it continues to prove its potency to the Polio Global Eradication Initiative. Why?
One explanation is that researchers have not collected enough data yet to say with certainty whether the vaccine is causing the outbreak. But how much longer will this go on?

It is equally plausible that the vaccine is not being handled properly. If the requisite temperature is not maintained, the vaccine can be rendered completely ineffectual. In remote areas, where power can be disrupted for hours and even days, the OPV treatments may have exceeded their temperature requirements and consequently lost their usefulness from temperature fluctuations. But surely, medical practitioners would know if their vaccine had potentially been compromised.

Unfortunately, both of these possibilities point to some kind of negligence. Either the doctors administering treatment are aware that their vaccine may not have the capacity to immunize their patients, or the people in charge are disseminating harmful vaccinations, then playing the victim to the ‘inconclusiveness of the data’ when it is clear that something has gone awry.

The Polio Global Eradication Initiative receives the majority of its funding through UNICEF and the US, both of which are beginning to look at Pakistan as an enemy, rather than a friend. Are political relations trickling down to the medical practitioners who are supposedly fighting a disease, not a country?

Fear Over Dioxin-Tainted Eggs Spreads in Europe

A scare over eggs that may have been tainted with dioxin at more than 4,700 German farms has spread to the Netherlands and the U.K., where some of the eggs were shipped.

European Union officials say the public should not be too worried about the levels of dioxin in the eggs, but they are also trying to determine which food products the dioxin was used in.

German officials shut down farms in five states on Monday, mainly in Lower Saxony, where it is believed the feed for hogs and chickens was contaminated with traces of dioxin, a potentially dangerous carcinogen. Millions of eggs were withdrawn from the market, and 8,000 chickens were culled.

Authorities said today they have filed criminal charges against the German company that allegedly supplied tainted fatty acid to animal feed makers, CNN reported. The company, Harles and Jentzsch, knew “for months” that the fatty acid it was selling to animal feed makers contained certain levels of dioxin, CNN said.

Charges were filed because the company “did not immediately inform” agricultural officials about the dioxin levels, according to a spokesman for the Agriculture Ministry.

Officials were alerted earlier this week that at least 3,000 tons of animal feed allegedly containing an additive with traces of dioxin had been sent to 1,000 farms in Germany. An estimated 136,000 eggs from those farms were then sent to the Netherlands and the U.K., the BBC reported today.

Chemicals In Water Supply Near Chicago Linked To Cancer

A report by the Chicago Tribune has revealed that officials in the village of Crestwood, just outside Chicago, have been secretly introducing tainted well water into the town water supply for years.

“I feel deceived,” village resident Tom Parkis said.

For years before the story broke, town residents had wondered if there might not be something wrong with their water. For example, Frank Caldario was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2009, at the age of 30.

“I can’t help but wonder if what happened to me had something to do with the water,” said Caldario, a non-smoker.

“It’s just unreal for someone my age to get that.”

Several months ago, the Tribune revealed that village officials had been using tainted well water for years, while telling the public and state regulators that all the village’s water came from Lake Michigan. Yet during some periods, up to 20 percent of the town’s drinking water came from the polluted well.

In response to the article, the Illinois Department of Public Health conducted a survey of disease rates in Crestwood between 1994 and 2006. The researchers found that rates of kidney and gastrointestinal cancer were significantly higher in Crestwood men than in the population at large, and rates of lung cancer were significantly higher in both men and women. The researchers could not prove that the higher cancer rates were caused by the polluted water, but did find it to be a possible cause.

Now residents are worried about the effects that drinking contaminated water over the long term may have had on their health.

“Of course there’s a concern. If I said it wasn’t in the back of my head, I’d be lying,” said Dominic Covone. “You don’t want to think something bad could happen from just drinking water.”

Since the story broke, the village has used more than $1 million in taxpayer funds to defend itself against lawsuits.

Contaminated Beef Given Out To School Lunch Programs

The USDA’s Office of the Inspector General (OIG) recently issued a shocking report (http://www.usda.gov/oig/webdocs/246…) about the condition of the nation’s industrial meat supply. It turns out that a lot of the U.S. meat supply is tainted with veterinary drugs, pesticides and heavy metals.

According to the report, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, or FSIS, continues to fail at properly monitoring the safety of the nation’s meat supply. So tainted meat is regularly being approved for sale, much of which ends up in school lunch rooms where it is fed to — guess who? — our children!

What’s truly disturbing about this is that the USDA knows why meat it getting tainted but it’s doing nothing about it. In fact, the agency regularly allows toxic meat to make its way to store shelves without even trying to stop it.

We’re not talking about microbial pathogens here; we’re talking about chemical contaminants that cattle are eating and then passing on to consumers. These contaminants are not cooked off like pathogens are, and they can actually intensify when cooked and become more harmful.

Pathogens vs. Chemical Contaminants
It is important to make this distinction between pathogens like E. coli versus chemical residues like pharmaceutical drugs and heavy metals. The public usually thinks about food contamination in terms of pathogens but often doesn’t consider the chemical contamination.

The types of contaminants that are ending up in meat are things like veterinary drugs and antibiotics that industrial agriculture uses to keep animals from dying before slaughter. You see, industrial farming is so filthy and unnatural that animals raised there wouldn’t stand a chance without a steady stream of drugs to keep them alive.

The irony about the excess use of drugs and antibiotics is that these things actually end up causing the diseases they are meant to treat and prevent. But the conditions in which these animals live are typically so horrendous that they probably wouldn’t make it to the slaughter without these toxic chemical interventions.

Why aren’t the regulatory agencies doing their job?
This is the same question being asked by OIG in its audit report. The FSIS is tasked with heading up the national residue program with the help of the FDA and EPA, but none of these agencies are actually doing their jobs.

These agencies are supposed to work together to establish tolerance levels for various pesticides, drugs and toxins in an effort to minimize their presence in the food. But according to the report, the agencies have not even established thresholds for many of the dangerous substances being found in meat, let alone test for them.

The agencies did jointly establish a Surveillance Advisory Team (SAT) and an Interagency Residue Control Group (IRCG) to help them accomplish program goals, but since none of them have actually committed to realistically achieving these goals, the whole program has basically gone nowhere.
